Okay. . .so I called the Universal rep this afternoon, just sort of a "Hi. . .just wanted to see if you guys were in a position to give me hard confirmation on Serenity showing at Mission Valley."

This is cool #1. . .he said, "I think we can do that. . .I'm just not sure when. They're being a little weird..." and I realize he thinks I'm talking about an ADVANCE screening. This is cool b/c he was actually in the 'advance screening' state of mind.

So. . .I reassure him that the only date I'm working on with him is September 30th. . .that I realize he's got tons on his plate and I don't want to ask for anything uber-special. . .just want to make the nationwide release something of memory.

THEN he tells me. . ."Oh. . .you guys probably won't even have to wait until September 30th anymore. Our test markets and advance screenings are off the charts. . .we had no idea. . .when you said, 'Big following', I didn't realize how big. . ."

And THEN he said,
Quote:

"All of us (Meaning the Distribution folk at 'Versal) really wish we'd just gone ahead and premiered it in May. It's working out as well as "Star Wars" and if we'd started in May, it would have run all summer."

Now. . .

See. . .

For a Firefly fan to say, "It'll be as big as Episode 3!!!" is delerium and delusion.

For a MOVIE CRITIC to say, "It'll be as big as Episode 3!!!" is optimistic if not slightly unrealistic.

For a DISTRIBUTOR. . .who's JOB involves looking at numbers and analyzing statistics, etc. etc. etc. . . to say something along those lines, however. . .and to have the OBVIOUS frustration in his voice of "Dammit, I wish we'd thought of that". . .

I mean. . .

WOW.

So. . .yeah. As the conversation ended, his words were, "I'd go ahead and look for a nationwide release to be earlier than September 30th."

EEEK!

That does rock, Static!

Giddy I feel.

But...if they move the opening date up, that will cause kinks in our plans, our t-shirt designs, our banners....

Though, not having to wait until the end of September....EEEK!

But we don't know when it'll be yet, so we can't change plans. Oh ugh. PLEASE don't be the weekend of my friend's wedding!!! Also, the 30th was the PERFECT weekend for me. It's my HS 10 yr reunion and it was the perfect excuse for me not to go.

Wow that is by far the best news I've heard all week. It would be great if we could get some summer movie exposure.

Though this does put a kink in my plan of converting people in a chain reaction sorta way. Some of my friends just aren't the mass viewing kind of group. So I was going to lend dvds to one. Use them as a testimonial to others and have them pass the dvds along to the next convert. Might have to think of a plan to pick up the pace now.

Very shiny news though. Thanks Static!

For those of you who asked...

My 'contact', a (guy named Vinnie), works in the Division of Universal Films that is responsible for the distribution of films.

These are the guys that spend their days looking at numbers and determining that THIS movie should go to THIS theatre, while THIS movie should go to THIS theatre. . .and THIS theatre should get 8 prints, while THIS theatre probably only needs 3.

(Da Vin Man) and I have been talking since the movie finished filming, so I could try to LOCK Serenity into one of the theatres owned by an acquaintance of mine. Fortunately for me, Bill, the owner of several theatres, has a very good rep with Universal and a very good business relationship with (The Vinmeister), so I didn't have to 'introduce' these guys.

(Vincenzo) has been pretty confident the entire time that Mission Valley would be a good venue for Serenity and the current numbers are proving that to be true.

Face it, folks...Serenity is kicking ass and taking names and it hasn't even truly 'left the gate' yet. 'Versal suits are kicking themselves right now for pushing it back now that they've discovered they could have run our beautiful boat all over the big screens ALL SUMMER when folks have nothing to do but go to the movies.

For those of you who want to try to arrange for a specific Venue in YOUR area. . .the number to call is THIS:

[MOD EDIT: It goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway -- if/when you call this number remember that you are representing browncoats everywhere, so please be polite and friendly and enthusiastic, not 'lunatic fringe', dong ma?]

214-360-0022

Speak to an operator and tell them you want to talk to the distribution rep for your city.

I'd be thrilled if Serenity came out earlier because I'm incredibly impatient and want to see it. However, it would upset my plan of seeing Alan Tudyk in Spamalot the 28th and then seeing him in Serenity the 30th. Unless Serenity's still in the theaters at that time even if the release is moved up, in which case I go see it again and my plans are saved. Okay, I've convinced myself. They should release the movie right now. In my apartment. And everyone involved should be here to see it. The world's more fun in my head than in the real world.

Would they really do that? After all, how would that look for a sequel, if everybody knew they are just nice and friendly to their fans when they need some support? Besides, even if it is somehow organized/paid through Universal, half these people might be the kind that would just pay for it themselves to be there. Of course, I might just be a naive dreamer falling for their elobarate act ,-)

While I certainly warmly embrace this news, I do have a question, and maybe other Browncoats can help answer.

Are the Versal folks tracking in any way the number of repeat viewers to the screenings?

Seems to me, that a lot of people will be on their 2nd and 3rd time seeing the BDM. While repeat viewings are a necessity for a highly successful run, does this make the numbers seem rosier than they are? I know that they added cities everytime, and they all sold out, but I'd just be interested to know how many "unique" viewers there were for the run of the screenings.

Don't get me wrong, Serenity by the end of summer/early fall would be a dream come true. With SW:ROTS not sucking, and War Of The Worlds coming soon, it might make sense to bump it up before sci-fi starts to wane. Go Versal, Go!

Stay Shiny,
Wes

I doubt they have any way of knowing how many 'repeat' viewers they have. . .but they're really looking at nothing more than numbers, which is fine.

On the one hand. . .maybe 100 million folks saw the movie on opening weekend. SCORE!!!!

On the other hand...maybe only 50 million saw it, but they loved it so much they saw it twice. SCORE!!!!

Either way, they win, and it opens doors for US as an audience.

I would LOVE to believe that the movie would do even HALF as good as star wars... but here's why i can't get excited by your news. All the advance screenings have to be populated with hard core fans. People who know the show and have been waiting for the film. If you really take that number and compare it to hard core star wars fans, we might equal like 1/50 of what star wars has if we were lucky. and that's not even counting the people who aren't hard core fans of star wars but are still willing to pay to see it. plus all the brand recognition star wars has which serenity sadly lacks. I have asked everyone I know if they plan to see Serenity, and unfortuatly, most of them simply say, "plan to see what?". But every one knows star wars.

I am all about the BDM making millions... believe me. But the idea people have that it is going to do jsut as well if not better than star wars just seems ludicris to me. and hey.. i didn't even like episode 3 all that much.

Well, this seems to be really cool. I'm glad that they're really optimistic about the pic. If they want to bump up the movie's release date, that's cool. I'm just hoping that it's not too early, you know what I'm saying.

I hope that they don't push it up so that it opens around, say, the end of August, for two reasons. One is that the end of August is usually kind of a dumping grounds for some of the weaker flicks of the summer. People are kinda movied out and are sick of the big fx vehicles, so that would kinda ruin SERENITY's changes at turning a profit, which we all know would be the only thing that would make sure our BDH's get the same longevity in movie theatres that Kirk and Co. got. And the second and more personal reason is that Terry Gilliam's cinematic return after an 8 year hiatus, THE BROTHERS GRIMM, is hitting theatres about that time. And that flick needs the same kind of attention our flick is getting. I mean, it's Terry Gilliam, for chrissakes.

Now beginning of August might be really shiny. That would indeed be a prime time to release the flick.

Peace

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

HELL'S KITTEN

Huh....

Interesting.

However, being a naturally pessimistic science weasel, I have a question. (At least one, anyway.) Isn't there a rather big difference between a number crunching film distributor and an actual 'Versal decision making FatCat? That’s not to imply that I don’t believe the opening could be moved up. If it can be moved back 5 months, it sure as shit could be moved anywhere (within reason). Is this just Your Man talking, or does he have people behind him saying the same thing?

On a somewhat unrelated note, being "as big as Episode 3" means a world wide box office of $300M opening weekend (total in almost the first month was around $650M world wide). As much as I love Firefly - and as much as I hate categorical imperatives - that just ain't gonna happen.

Now, I’ve always been suspicious about all these advance screenings, and something you said here makes me even more so. (Yeesh, pessimistic and suspicious... I must have some redeeming qualities....) Of course the advance screenings are going to be madness; I can’t imagine it would be too difficult to find 200-300 fans and friends in 10, 25, and 35 cities willing to see the movie on a special day and time. 10,000 fans in the whole US isn’t a lot to ask for; there are what, 36,000 registered on the ‘Versal board? “Test Markets.” Plural. That’s what interests me.

The first test screening resulted in a somewhat results-skewing mass of BrownCoats in attendance. As someone mentioned, we are an inquisitive bunch, so I imagine as soon as one finds out about a test screening, others will find out in short order. So, if they need true “test markets,” but need to keep the BrownCoat contingent away.... Do you think they’re pulling a sleight of hand on us? Pointing the entire BrownCoat community in one direction – towards the advance screenings – while having rounds of true test screenings for the general masses elsewhere on the same night? I mean, it’s not like we’d be lookin’ for it cuz we’re all aflutter with the advance screenings just for us. (Hm. Add conspiratorial to my ever growing list of endearing traits.) Cuz, that might change things. Kinda curious about what y’all think....

At any rate, I have all my T-shirts queued up and ready to go on a moment’s (and a hard drive fixing’s) notice. Plans for attending the actual Premiere may have to change, but I can suffer through that.

(And on a completely unrelated note: Static, I'm still waiting on that photo of you in that black flight suit.)

Cheers.

I think we also have to take into account the amount of fans that either couldn't get tickets, were too far away from a screening theater, or found that going to a different city to see a not-quite-complete version of the film at 10 p.m. on a work night just wasn't possible.

There are a lot of us out here that just couldn't make the screenings, so I think that when the film actually hits the numbers won't be skewed to just those 'Coats who saw the advance screenings.

Another big plus about the film perhaps coming earlier is that the DVDs will come out sooner, which is even better!

It also gives us more breathing room with the PA Shindig. That gathering is the weekend of October 8, and the Sept. 30 date was a little too close. Now we can travel and get together with other Browncoats for an earlier premiere.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

DON'T Screw UP DragonCon!

You are not alone Flechette as "please don't mess up Dragon Con" was my first thoughts on reading this news too.

I don't want to sound ungrateful or anything if 'Versal does release the movie earlier than Sept 30th, but I don't want Joss or the BDHs pulling out of DC to attend premieres or premiere parties leaving us loyal Browncoats high & dry in Atlanta.

Thanks for posting the news Static. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

About the Episode III thing--no way is Serenity going to be as big at the box office. ()

Nor did this guy really say it would, when you think about it. He said, "It's working out as well as "Star Wars."" Which I interpret as the test markets liking it as much as those of Ep III did. But how many people went to see Star Wars just because it was Star Wars?

Not to despair, though--while I don't believe Serenity (Episode I) will rack up nearly as much box office as Star Wars, this does bode well for a 20+ year entertainment legacy and five more films.

Another problem I see w/ moving up the movie date is the SCIFI running of Firefly which builds up to the movie.

It seems to me that there's alot of promotional time that's getting ready to be shown and frankly moving the movie date again may not be in it's best interests.

I have yet to see the trailer in any theatre in Greensboro, haven't seen it on TV yet - I'd like to see at least a little more buzz aimed at people who aren't already Browncoats before the movie is released.

Then again I'd also love to see it next week fully released and everything

personal wants vs greater good - gah!

Guys, our heros LOVE Dragon Con and Jewel told me Joss is excited as well, so trust me - he's not gonna let them mess up Dragon Con by putting the release date too close to it that the cast would have to miss out. I honestly hope it comes out BEFORE Dragon Con so we don't have to run spoiler control at panels for people who saw the advanced screening. Shiny shiny news, I'm excited. Though as someone said changing all the merchandise is gonna be a pain - but we've already done it once, so we should be pros by now! *still has many many things that say April 22nd* Just hang tight - Universal is here to take care of us, they won't let us down!

SUNDERWOOD

Back when it was in April-ish I was making plans to go from the Carolina's to LA for the premiere so I could stand by the red carpet.

Then they moved it to September.

Now...

Actually, they probably would still be going to the con. The premiere of the movie is anywhere from a few days to a week or more before the actual opening day, so assuming that's their largest conflict they should be able to make it. Plus, if your talking, like, talk show promotion they would do that on Friday during the day, so if I were you I wouldn't worry about it.

Well I doubt there was an official count or anything, but at the 5/26 Austin screening the Universal exec asked how many were at the 5/5 screening. I would say it was roughly a third of the hands that went up. So, they probably reported that. Which is pretty amazing considering that even if everyone from the first screening wanted to return they would have had to get ahold of tickets which is not exactly a walk in the park.
