BLACKOUTNIGHTS

...I'm expecting will be Serenity. I haven't heard of many others.

The only one that, I think, might come close is Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story. It's a documentary on the deceased lead singer of Mother Love Bone. I've heard it's very 'artsy' and over the top at some points...to reflect Wood's own personality. I'm looking forward to seeing it as much as I am Serenity — if you can believe that!

I'm sure everyone's favourite will be Serenity. As for best, I'd say Crash. Still another 6 months left in the year and Oscar season hasn't even begun.

I haven't been to that many movies this year, but "Crash" was excellent. My favorite movie this year was "Serenity", followed by "Batman Begins". I loathed "Star Wars"...couldn't get out of there fast enough. I actually fell asleep during Obi-Wan's fight with Anakin, and one of my friends had to wake me up because I was snoring. That was the first movie I've ever fallen asleep in.

I'm hoping to add SERENITY onto my ten best list of 2005 once I see it.

As for now, it's a bit hard to tell. A lot of the big summer blockbusters for me were really good (HITCHIKERS, EPISODE 3, BATMAN BEGINS), and there are a few that I havn't seen that I'm sure would end up on my list (particularily MILLIONS, Danny Boyle's latest).

But so far, there are two flicks I've seen that I absolutely love and one is definitly up there as one of the absolute best I've seen all year. The two are SIN CITY and THE UPSIDE OF ANGER. For SIN CITY, I not only think it's the truest comic book movie ever, but a great resusitation of those old 40's and 50's film noir flicks. You know how in THE SOPRANO'S, Tony asks "Whatever happened to Gary Cooper?" For me, it's whatever happened to Humphrey Bogart. I'll tell you what happened. He was brought back to life through Mickey Roarke and a ton of makeup and was given the name Marv.

But THE UPSIDE OF ANGER is to me, the absolute best thing I've seen so far in the theatres. I saw this flick three times in the movies, I loved it so much. It's one of those diamond in the rough movies. Somehting that you go check out with a mild interest, but you end up being blown away and gobsmacked by how well it's acted, written and directed. If there's any justice in the verse, Joan Allen will be going up the Kodak stage steps to get her first Best Actress Oscar. If there's one flick out there you all absolutely have to see, this is it.

What I liked most about it is that it wasn't a flick that you'd expect to fall in love with. And to me, those are the movies that really stay with you. If you go to a flick like SERENITY, expect great things, and get it, it's a really good feeling. But when you see something like THE UPSIDE OF ANGER, or any flick that you have a mild interest in it, and then are blown away by it's unassuming awesome force, it's like discovering buried treasure in your backyard or having sex in a way you never thought possible. It's a revelation.

That why I think the ones we should envy are the non-Browncoats. The person who sees the trailer for it, thinks "That looks cool. I might check it out." Goes in not expecting much, sees the flick, and then walks out with a look on his face like he's just seen God.

As for CRASH, it had it's moments, but a lot of the stuff seemed a bit too coincidental and conventient for my tastes.

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

I've seen Serenity, and can confirm that it is the best film I've seen this year, by far.

I agree with the poster above who loathed Episode 3 - I can't believe there are people who actually think this was an improvement on the other prequels. (None of the prequels were particularly good, but this was by far the worst of all 6 Star Wars films in my opinion.)

While I'd like to agree, I'm gonna withhold judgement 'till I see it again in Sept. Wiping tears of joy from my eyes through out the movie made it rather hard to actually SEE much.

Well, let me start by pointing out how much I hate all of you who've seen the BDM already. Alright, not really, but still. Sin City was one my favorite movies this year, too. The use of black and white versus color and the great film noir-ness of the movie were superb.

Really? That's so cool, Dante. From what I've read of Scot Barbour's interviews, he seems like a cool dude. And so does his wife. I think Malfunkshun's going to get overlooked this year.

I actually quite liked the terminal, tho not sure that that was in 2005 tho, thought it was interesting, plus it was a little bizarre. I did expect to hate it, but didn't. Saw a film called The Interpreter (i think) which was really unexpectedly good.

Sin City became one of my favourite films ever. What is it about it that makes it brilliant? I don't think all of the acting is good, though most is pretty acceptable. I think the plot meanders and gets a bit lost, for something that's pretty straight forward (yes i know it's a comic, but as a flim it isn't the best plot ever), some of the dialogue is lengthy, and i dislike black and white as a method of watching media, that's why man invented colour, so we didn't have to. But this film was stylish, looked good, sounded great, some of the dialogue was instantly quotable and particularly amazing, and it made you feel like you'd just experienced one of the best films ever, because u had.

Hoping that Serenity will prove to blow all these out of the water though.

We achieved the impossible, and that makes us mighty
