Don't know if this has been posted or not, but I was just looking around on TV.com (apparently TVTome has undergone a bit of a makeover...) and noticed a ranking of the top 25 shows based on user rating and daily views:

OK, I have to plead ignorance here. How do they come up with rankings for such a mix of shows that includes shows not currently on the air (like Twin Peaks, which hasn't been on in years) and shows that are currently on, like Lost? Am I completely missing the point somehow?

Maybe I'm not explaining this enough. If I wanted to give a user rating for Lost, I could go watch it on tv and come up with an opinion. If I wanted to do that for Twin Peaks, I couldn't - it's not on tv. So what I'm saying is, where are they getting those ratings? Are they really old ratings from years ago (for Twin Peaks) that they are comparing with current ratings for other shows? If so, that doesn't seem very realistic, so what are we really supposed to make of this list?

Does my question make a little more sense now?

Not really - how can they have pages about any show that isn't on? Because someone out there still cares about it.
Twin Peaks is out on VHS and DVD. Fans of the show presumably rate it. I don't know how good the tv.com algorhitms are - perhaps only a couple of votes can skew it.

Pesonally I don't care much what the values are, just a bit of fun i guess.

They have nothing to do with broadcast ratings, its what people like.
I see McCloud will be out on DVD later this year, I might very well go in and vote for some of the episodes by then.

OK, you're still not getting what I'm asking. You said it's not about broadcast ratings, it's about what people like. OK, I can tell I like Lost because I can turn on the tv and watch it (in fact, I could have done that just last night). Now, Twin Peaks - I've never seen it and I can't rate it because it's not on tv - so I can't even tell whether I would like it or not. Yes, I could buy the dvd, but I'm not going to do that unless I know beforehand that I would like it. Also, only season one is available on dvd. Season two is not.

So you see how the ratings must be skewed? If I went to that website to rate all those shows, I wouldn't be able to rate Twin Peaks - and that goes for lots of other people in my situation. Whereas, with Lost, literally ANYBODY could rate it.

You know what? I think I answered my own question, so never mind. The user ratings ARE necessarily skewed because of, well, the above reasons. So the list really doesn't have any meaning other than as a conversation piece, which is fine, I guess. I was just thrown by the numbers in front of the show listings because they seem to imply a particular ranking, but the ranking really doesn't mean anything - it's just meaningless numbers.

So, like I said, never mind. I actually wish I hadn't read this in the first place. It's about as good a use of time as reading my horoscope.

Its not completely meaningless, it indicates what the users of TV.com likes - if it becomes big enough it might indicate what a large parts viewing audience likes. And a high rating might convince others to check it out.

GROUNDED

I would imagine a very low percentage of visitors actually rate the shows, so take that list as an indication of the most visited pages. Certainly not meaningless.
