Thanks for the concern. We're not all in London, though, so we're not all at risk. Some of us are, however, or know those who are. So again, thanks.

Looking out at a bright and shiny day in Minnesota, reminded of another day just like this in September not so long ago, I'm keeping this bumped as well.

Interesting how much smaller the world seems when something like this happens.

Josh, who I refer to as Spacebug, lives outside the city. I'll be e-mailing him anyway, just in case.

I hope all browncoats are fine, in fact i hope as many people as possible are alright.
I have a couple of times referenced the fact that i'm from england, so am posting to say that i live nowhere near london but my thoughts are with those who do.

This is bad, is bl**dy awful. I feel for all those affected, and i pity those who think that these kinds of actions further their cause. I pity you, because you have no crasp on reality; the reality is that you are killing people, destroying lives, and it is wrong, it's always wrong.

So, hope all Browncoats are okay, also hope that as many people as possible recover.

Saddened Duke, signing off. (will help keep this bumped.)

4 bombs went off. 3 in the subways and 1 on a bus. As of right now, at least 40 people are dead and over 300 injured. It seems to be a terrorist attack.

From Yahoo! News:

Four London Blasts Kill 40, Injure 300
AP - 30 minutes ago
Four blasts rocked the London subway and tore open a packed double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday, sending bloodied victims fleeing after what a shaken Prime Minister Tony Blair called "barbaric" terrorist attacks. At least 40 people were killed and more than 350 wounded. Two U.S. law enforcement officials said at least 40 people were killed. In London, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Piddick said at least 33 people killed in the subway system alone.

For news with this issue BBC is probably the best as it publishes confirmed information.
See:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4661059.stm

Summary:
7 blasts went off. 4 have been confirmed as bombs, 3 are probably bombs but investigators are working on finding the evidence. 6 blasts were in the underground and 1 was on the top floor of a double-decker bus. 33 people have been confirmed dead although this is likely to rise. London Underground is completely closed, the buses are not running through central London and many of the train stations are closed or offering a limited service.

I woke up exhausted this morning with the news of this attack on the TV. I kept trying to nod off again in hopes of waking up "for real" and finding this to be just some horror from my head. Alas, no such luck. Just want to say that in spite of the horror some can bring, I'm pleased to see the love than comes out of it from all the Browncoats here. Hope all you Browncoats and all your loved ones in the area are well.

See.

I'm sure the AP (Associated Press) is keeping their facts straight as well. Last thing this needs is a hyperspeed rumor mill.

On 9/11, everyone was checking all the news sources, so the only timely updates I could find were on the NASDAQ Web site. The editors over there stopped posting research and started putting up ALL CAPS headlines as information came out.

(This is mainly to keep this thread *bumped*) I sent an e-mail to Spacebug, but he hasn't answered yet. Hopefully, they're on holiday in the north somewhere, or glued to the TV.

I live on the south coast in Portsmouth now but I used to live in London back when the IRA were setting off the occasional device themselves.

Sounds a bit strange but the best way to beat terrorism like this is to ignore it and get on with your life as usual. The main aim of an attack like this is actually economic disruption (hence hitting the transport infrastructure) so the typical over-reaction to the event is exactly what the perpetrator wants.

Thanks for the concern,

I don`t live anywhere near London, but to many in the U.S. 100 odd miles isn`t that far away.

The disruption wasn`t just in London either, Trains coming/going into London from Swindon were stopped, Motorways ground to a halt in areas around the M25/M4.

It has been reported on Sky News/CNN that over 700 were injured & 39 fatalities - an unknown Alqueda Europe has taken the blame for this although no-one in tyhe security services has made any comment about the post made on a website.

We look forward to something getting back to normal tomorrow, although I`m ill in bed at the moment.

Have we heard from all of London's Browncoat Regulars yet? Seems a pretty sparse response from what I assumed to be a largish community (say, 10 times the number of replies thus far). Still, I suppose many have other more pressing things to attend to than a discussion group...

Let's keep it bumped though, until all are accounted for, 'right?

My wife, who is English, has family who until recently were Londoners. They are all fine, and have survived The Blitz and various other subsequent attacks on civilian targets in that city, until the last remnants finally retired to the Suffolk countryside last year. In the not too distant future, the last of her family tree will disappear from England -- the offspring having moved to New Zealand and the US -- and that is a grievous shame, imo.

British resolve -- and particularly English resolve -- has not gained its reknown falsely. I may be a lowly mongrel Yank, but I remember that this one, small, weather-beaten isle once stood alone against the concerted might of one of the most fearsome war machines ever assembled, and has a collective Will of iron. Whoever has perpetrated this crime really should have done a better job reading and comprehending their history texts. I suspect they have made (to paraphrase Mercutio) a grave mistake...

Sentiments of 'getting your own back' possibly, at some future date, once the dead have been buried, the injured tended, and the perpetrators positively identified. The silly sods'll probably get around to incriminating themselves, er, 'claiming their victory' within the next couple of days, via taped message from a rat's hole in Afghanistan (or Paris), the morons...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
Exactly how stupid -- beyond simply brainwashed and insular -- does one have to be in order to think that such acts of terrorism against civilian targets are bringing the world to a proper relationship with Allah? Or is it just the fun of killing defenseless people? ("See how the grandmother and baby explode? Jolly good!") I'm probably missing the terrorists'/freedom fighters'/jihadin's delicate philosophical point entirely, but that's what it boils down to for a common man like me.

Judging from Tony Blair's expression during his comments yesterday, I would have to agree.

I haven't noticed that "WWMD" is used in the same context that we would say "WWJD", but that doesn't mean it isn't. Although it does seem unfathomable that a relationship with one's God would warrant this kind of atrocity, there are Christians with some funny ideas on how to serve their faith... for instance:

Let's not forget what pro-life activists can do in pursuit of their cause. Never fails to amaze me that a group that believes in the preservation of all human life can justify getting their point across by setting off a bomb in a clinic.

**Bump**

I've been a New Yorker for 10 years now and was standing on the street when the World Trade Center building came down. Oddly enough, it was a mixed blessing. It was my first year in law school and I made some of my best friends over the next couple of days (mainly because I was housing a bunch of people whose apartments were in the blast zone). I guess what I'm trying to say is that now is the time to be with those that you love and/or find someone new to love. My prayers are with all of you, to call this a terrible tragedy doesn't encompass the plethora of feelings you must be experiencing. For what its worth, my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Channy:

Ah, religion! I honestly thought of including every group that engages in killing non-combatants to advance its ideological goals, i.e., American Separatists (OKC bombing), IRA, etc.; but I felt it would only lengthen my already over-wordy post.

As to your example, I don't consider 'pro-life' Christians who kill (or endorse the same) in the name of God, to be Christians at all. From Matthew 26: 51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus [Simon Peter, according to John 18:10] stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant [named Malchus, ibid] of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. 52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. ...Luke 22 has it thus: 49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

I think a true Christian's mandate is clear: killing in the name of the Lord is in contradiction to the words and deeds of Jesus, and antithetical to the basis of our belief.

I'll then take it to the nth degree and say that these men -- whether they are IRA, American Separatists, jihadin, radical pro-lifers, or whatever group that fear they are losing their grip on perceived dominance -- are simply murderous criminals and cowards. There is nothing noble about them, and all their protestations to the contrary are lies of varying cleverness and subtlety. None of them represent any group of sane people, regardless of race, religion, sex or creed...

See? I told you it made the post wordier. Also, while I figured I was skating the thin ice of appropriateness with the previous post by even mentioning the possible assailants, their motives, and the possible reaction of the British "collective Will", I reckon this post has taken it much further than just about anybody will be comfortable with.

But, that's the joy of being a "lowly mongrel Yank" (and a Texican to boot). We just don't give a damn if we cross the line. I wasn't gonna say any of that, but you brought it up and it needed to be said in any case...

Insensitively (or 'American-ly'),

i DO aim to misbehave

Zoid -

It was not my intention to "bring up" anything that would hyjack this post for a discussion on religiosity. I wrote a pretty lengthy response and posted it, then thought better of it and took it down.

This is not the place for the kind of discussion we almost had. This is for the England Browncoats, so we can hear from them and know they're okay.

Zoid, if you'd like to find out what I wrote, I'll send it to you--from one Lowly Mongrel Yank to another (don't let the avatar fool you).

Meanwhile, I'm just glad we're getting the responses trickling in ever so slowly.
