So ok many of us here are Sci-Fi nuts, with what I imagine is quite an extensive knowledge of spaceships from various sci-fi TV shows, and Films.

So my question to you is:

Were we to be given the opportunity to whizz around the universe in a spaceship of our choosing from any sci-fi TV show and/or Film, which spaceship would you choose and why...?

I'd maybe opt for the Millenium Falcon - for sheer cool factor, but I was always partial to that thing those kids built in the film The Explorers remember that?

Also I loved the Cylon Fighters from Battle Star Galactica That'd maybe be my choice for a fighter.

So over to y'all?

Ok, so maybe this shows my real level of geekitude, but here goes...

My favorite spaceship is certainly the Enterprise from the future from the last episode of ST:TNG. Maybe it's just the way it was piloted (Whoa! 3-D flying in the Star Trek universe! Unheard of!), maybe it was the fact that Riker was the captain (He's certainly the coolest (not necessarily the best, but the coolest) character from the show), or maybe it was the fact that it just destroyed the ships that it was fighting, but it really cool. Certainly left an impression on me.

That's just too easy!

There is no choice and no discussion!!

It has to be the Millenium Falcon - or that could be the Harrison Ford Factor, I guess ....

Hmmm... I can't choose one, so I just have a list of options just off the top of my head... some are perhaps a bit obscure, but...

The Carrier, from the comic series The Authority. Hell, I don't even need to cruise around space in it, I'd be happy just being in Earth orbit with it. :)

The Enterprise D, solely based on the fact that it has a holodeck.

Just based on my name here I'd want to name the Hooded Swan, which is a great ship compared to every other ship in its universe, but really doesn't have anything special about it beyond that.

Moya from Farscape also up there, assuming Pilot came along.

I like the Cylon fighters too. Those would be too short range though.

I think the Scimitar from ST: Nemesis could be fun. All the power and glory of an imperial cruiser with a nice "now you see it - now you don't" flair. Need a pretty big crew to run that one though.

The Negh'Var class Klingon ship would be fun for about the same reasons. Problems are the same though.

I guess I might go with the Klingon Bird of Prey. I think I'd go with the D-12 subclass for easier planetfall. Still cloak. It's a nice fighter. And low crew req's.

With no crew... the Millenium Falcon. I sure would miss that cloak though.

Being a sci-fi geek as I am, there is no one easy answer.
For a one man ship, the Viper from the new Galactica.
If I'm bringing the family, the Jupiter 2 from the series Lost in Space.
For a large crew, the Enterprise from Star Trek 1 through 6.

And if I'm operatin' on the shady side of the law, it's a tossup between Serenity and the Millienium Falcon, guess it depends richly on what I'm smugglin'.

As far as what I'd ride around in, I've gotta agree with StarPilotGrainger: the Enterprise D. For much the same reason, too- it's roomy, comfortable, and has a holodeck and extensive library.

As to what the coolest ships are, I always liked more utilitarian/ realistic designs. The Eagle from Space:1999 and the StarFury from Babylon5 are two great designs. Most realistic fighter design has to be the Gunstar from Last Starfighter. You almost never see a fighter with turrets- how stupid is that!!!

As to prettiest ship, I'll take anything from Naboo.

For my one man fighter - an X-Wing. I've always thought it is the coolest looking fighter.

For a bigger ship to live on its a bit more difficult because there are so many criteria to consider. I'll take Serenity if it comes with Kaylee!

I'm kinda partial to the Runabouts from DS9, for personal cruising craft. But my absolute favorite ship of all time is the Romulan Warbird from TNG. Big. Green. Decloaks out of nowhere and wipes the floor with the pathetic federation starships.

Though, for the biggest of the big and bad, it's the Super Star Destroyer.

Ohh yeah I forgot about the Bird of Prey - that is an awesome looking ship.

Some interesting suggestions coming out many of them I don't know off or have seen so looks like I'm going to have to bone up on some of my sci-fi.

One that I forgot to mention earlier is the ship form Silent Running now for a cruising ship with the family this is the one! It even had buggy's to get around the inside of the ship with. Way cool!!!! Oh and I've just remembered Circa from Ulysees 31 animated TV show.

There are so many.

By the way does the Death Star count as a ship ?

Any chance I could kidnap the guys from "The A-Team" and force them to cobble together all the collest parts of the different ships I like?

One of my faves is the Sulako (sp?) from "Aliens." Give it a holodeck, maybe a Battlestar-type launch bay, throw in a bunch of X-Wings and Tie Fighters, tack on one of those conversion chamber things from "V," toss the "Seaquest" sub in the back...

For a big ship there is only one answer: The Cygnus from the Black Hole. that is one beautiful ship. Preferably without the morbid and creepifying zombies.

Smaller ship: Falcon or Serenity. Probably Serenity, since Han has the Falcon modded until it breaks all of the time.

The GTB (Galactic Terrain Bomber) Athena light bomber and GTF (Galactic Terrain Fighter) Hercules heavy fighter from the Decent: Freespace game on PC. The Athena is just a fast & mean little sucker for its size and is the most ascetic looking bomber in the game (there are some ugly ones in there). If the magazines were removed and replaced with cargo pods she would make a neat little short range smuggling ship, and a small cabin could be retrofitted for longer flights. The “Herc” is like an AK-47 big, not very subtle and kinda clumsy but it can tear though a group of enemy fighters and strafe a cruiser with out a scratch on her hull.

CYBERSNARK

Hmm.

For fighters, it's a tie between the J-95 version of the X-Wing (seen in the New Jedi Order series; basically an X-wing with a few system upgrades for Jedi pilots), and the Starfury fighter from B5.

Being a mecha nut, I'm also fond of Macross 2 or Macross Plus era Veritechs (the older Macross 1/Robotech models just don't impress me that much), or a nice Gundam from either Seed or Wing continuities. Realistically though, I have to admit that giant humanoid robots tend to be more trouble than they're worth.

For small crew ships, much as I love Serenity, the lack of weapons would make me antsy (don't want to have to use 'em, but I like knowing they're there). Either the Millennium Falcon or the Eureka Maru from Andromeda.

(My personal custom would be based on the movie version of the Jupiter 2. Yeah, the movie sucked, but that ship was just sweet! It was like the Falcon, but bigger, and with curves.)

Lighter military ships are DS9's Defiant, B5's Whitestar, Gundam Seed's Archangel, or the (Sabre-class) Da Vinci from Star Trek: S.C.E..

For larger military ships, gonna have to go with the Andromeda Ascendant (a High Guard Glorious Heritage-class destroyer). It may not have shields, but it's the only televised SF ship that can handle realistic space combat (engagements at far-beyond-visual-range, distances measured in light-seconds and light-minutes, physical and electronic countermeasures, guided warheads, point-defence lasers). It also comes with a fully-conscious AI avatar, complete with holograms, several types of robots (including two house-sized mecha ), AI-guided drone craft, and an optional Ship-Made-Flesh android. She can support over a thousand crew, troops, and support staff, but can still function with a crew of five, and comes with a fully self-sufficient on-board factory, capable of "eating" an asteroid field and churning out everything from fighters to personal body armour. It also has an arboretum, with a Vedran Oak that stands three decks tall and wider than some ships.

Runners up include the (Sovereign-class) Enterprise-E, the Cardassian Galor-class Trager (from the post-TV DS9 novels), or the SDF-1 from Robotech.

Cybersnark, you really know your ships!

Have you ever checked out Crest of the Stars/ Banner of the Stars? It's an anime series (based on books, not manga) consisting of three series, each about 9-12 episodes. Pure space opera at it's best! While the story is about the two main characters, the setting is the beginning of an intra-galactic war. And the space battles are rivoting. A little cerebral, but well worth it. If you're not hooked by the end of episode 5, nevermind.

Anyway, recommended for anyone who loves space opera/ fleets and doesn't mind anime. And no, I don't get a cut of the sales.....

I'm going to have to second with the TARDIS. Serenity and the Millennium Falcon might have character and distinction, but for efficiency and what it could do, you can't beat a space and time traveling ship powered by a time vortex and all packaged in a 1960's police box.

ROCKETJOCK

Okay, one ship per universe.

Star Wars: Millenium Falcon, the original hyperspace-capable hot rod. Complete down to the fuzzy dice hanging in the cockpit. 'Nuff said.

Star Trek: The Delta Flyer from ST:Voyager. All the utility and clean lines of DS9's runabouts, but with that same ubercool hot rod mentality. And hey -- a Star Fleet vessel with real controls--joystick and throttle -- instead of a stupid touchpad.

Babylon Five: Earthforce's atmospheric shuttles -- especially for the way they landed horizontally, but launched vertically -- are one of the most believable transports I've seen in TV SF.

Space:1999: The Eagle class in general would be the obvious choice, but I'll be specific and choose the long-range variation with the modified heavy-lift modular unit and strap-on booster packs that was first seen in the episode The Metamorph.

Space Rangers: The hero's patrol craft, Tin Lizzie; An early example of CGI-driven FX on the small screen. It was in some ways an interesting show, a western in space with realistic firearms instead of zap guns. A bit ahead of it's time, perhaps... Oddly enough, despite the fact that it wasn't broadcast on Fox, it was still cancelled quickly.

Red Dwarf: Starbug, which I have always thought of as a late-model Volksraumschiff.

Firefly: Serenity. (Big surprise).

As you can see, I have a weakness for smaller ships, especially cargo craft, and vessels with the potential to be converted into smuggler's rigs. Must'a been a rumrunner in a past life...

For pure asthetics and comfort, the beautiful lines of the Consititution Class refit (the Enterprise in Star Trek the Motion Picture) would be my first choice. It has the best lines of any Star Trek vessel ever!

For pure fire power, it would be a toss up between Andromedia and Defiant. I love Sisko's little ship, but Andromedia has Rommie, so that would be the tie breaker!

For a hotrod, I'd have to go with the Mark II Viper on the new BSG. The Millenium Falcon is a custom hotrod like a 32 Ford, and I love it, but the Viper is like.....well a Viper (Dodge)!

For a small basic transport, I'd be torn between the Eagle from Space 1999 and the Runabout from DS-9. For nostalgia's sake, I'd probably choose the Eagle.

All these these ships have things I love about them, but if I had to live day in and day out on a ship, Serenity would ultimately be my choice. It may not be as pretty or advanced as some of the others I've mentioned, but since I would take my family along with me, a ship like Serenity would feel more like home. I know I'd feel comfortable walking it's decks, and I'd be confident that my family would be safe living aboard her.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

HARDWARE

For a fighter class ship I'd have to chose the SA-43 Hammerhead from S:AAB. It's got an articulated main gun, missiles and a defensive aft turret. Plus, sexy curves!

For a small ship I'd take Serenity. She's got a mechanic, unlike the Millenium Falcon. The lack of weapons is bothersome, but I think the object in a ship this size is to not be noticed.

For a big ship I'd take Galactica from the latest BSG. I recall the Enterprise from TOS got it's tail kicked by a Romulan nuke. Galactica seemed to weather the Cylon nuke that hit it pretty well. No accounting for yield, but still...

For ridiculously large ships I guess I'd have to go with the IAV Dortmunder... j/k How about the Lexx? Main weapon big enough to destroy a planet. Maybe a little undergunned for small ships, but what the heck, it's got style!

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

I believe (according to the toy, anyway) the cockpit freely rotates, always "upright" in a planet's gravity well. Handy for the pilot when fighting near planets.

Also, my wife reminded me of two great capital ships that I forgot. The Vorlon and Centauri cruisers from Bab 5! Surely, Kosh's ship is better than Moya in a fight.

I thought I was the only one who remembered The Explorers! I loved that movie as a kid. Nice to know I'm not alone.

As far as my ship though, I'd have to go with Moya. She's just so pretty, and as a bonus you get Pilot, who is one of my favorite television characters.

No Montanagirl you are not alone. I loved this film too as a kid. Those aliens were a revelation! Absolutely hilarious. I'm so glad I found someone who likes this film also!

You know I watched that film so many times I ended up watching every sci-fi film it referenced just so as I could get the joke!

Do you remember the mouse with the buttons in his cage that uttered words when it stood on them? When that ball thing goes flying around and wrecks the basement, the mouse shouts out "Help! Help!" I almost collapsed I laughed so hard!!!!

I'll take the Death Star. Forget steering around planets, just deal with them directly!

HOTHERSALE

Yeah, B-Wings were cool. I like the big canon at the end of their main wing.

Am I the only one who thinks the Hands-of-Blue ship kicks ass? Granted, we know next to nothing about it, but in terms of pure aesthetics, that is one bad mutha.
