So what would happen if the FOX network would be interseted in more seasons of Firefly? They surely know by now that it's about as popular as Pokemon in Japan, (a.k.a whitehot property) and they can no longer deny the fact that they made a mistake. So if they decide to pull a Family Guy, and beg Whedon's forgivness, would he do it?

Word around the campfire is that the new hourlong Star Wars drama will be aired on the Fox network. Think of this: Star Wars 8-9:00 Firefly 9-10:00 Fox Friday. Just tell me that aint a recipe for greatness.

They'd only find a way to screw it up.

A choice between Firefly on Fox, or no Firefly on TV....

I say no. They would only air the eps out of order, pre-empt it with baseball, probably try to recast it, then cancel it after 5 eps ( over 10 weeks )

Be better if all the good writers/producers boycotted the bastards and let them die.

This is something that had never occured to me. It's highly unlikely isn't it. Plus they WILL screw it up. Plus, the BDH probably have bigger sights than this now. But, miniseries, that'd be cool right.

however, as i sed, not really gonna happen is it.

Well said. I don't blame ya, after all they did cancel one of the best shows ever.

They also cancelled Family Guy, brought it back, and haven't managed to screw it up yet. If Fox wants the show back, then, even if it isn't as good as it could be on another network, it's better than no Firefly.

Considering that Fox can't seem to launch a "Fox show" anymore, they probably think Firefly was the least of their mistakes. I don't we'll be seeing that much more of Arrested Development. And does anyone else remember what happened to Dark Angel and The Tick?

Do rights to TV shows last like 99 years or some long amount of time? Cuz if the rights last only a short time, then we can out wait Fox we might have a chance of seeing Firefly (new seasons) on another channel.

...The problem is this: I don't think Joss has any intentions of doing television again, in the foreseeable future. He may one day get to missing it and do something in that medium again.

But, in the meantime, if you had finally matriculated at the university of your choice, would you voluntarily go back to high school? The girl would have to be really special...

So, I'm thinking that should F*x decide to revive Firefly, they'd have to do it with new actors, writers and creative staff. Would it still be Firefly? I don't think so.

Still, I suppose if the Red Sox can win a championship, it's proof positive that anything can happen...

Respectfully,

i've heard the exact thing. No more tv shows for Joss, he's beyond that now etc. But I guess the real reason for this thread, and why I'm always so curious about Firefly returning to TV is this:

I DON'T THINK FIREFLY/SERENITY CAN SURVIVE IN ANY OTHER MEDIUM.

Don't get me wrong. I will watch the movie, and love it, as will all Firefly fans. But this is what I honestly feel to be true, and maybe Joss does as well:

The development, and growth of characters can't be done in a 2 hour movie. Let's say Simon finally realizes he loves Kaylee and they end up getting married. If you can see how they interact over a season, and finally get together in ep 22, that is powerful. If the same is done in a movie, with the main plot taking up most of it, not nearly as powerful. It can't be. It's the subtle moments in Firefly that matter most.

Lets just say there are going to be 3 movies, with a 3 year wait between each one. For most firefly fans this will be unacceptable. I will watch as many as they make, but the long wait between films will turn a lot of the fans off.

After reading the comicbook of Serenity #1, I know for a fact that it can't continue in this form. It was good, but not even in the same Ballpark as the Firefly series.

If Firefly doesn't come back to TV as a series, it will just fall into the cult hit status only. I want it to be like Star Trek, not The Evil Dead

If Joss will do it.

I think Fox would actually take care of it this time.
Fox messes up but with the fanbase and loyalty of firefly now. Aint no thing in the verse that can stop us now.

Star Wars Firefly friday would kick so many levels of ***.

Hm. Don't know much about the TV industry, do you?

In any case, my understanding--and correct me if I'm wrong--is that it's not a matter of FOX *wanting* the show back. My understanding is that FOX *owns* the show, and it's more a matter of them relinquishing those rights, more'n anything else...

In any case. My favorite scenario would be to see Firefly end up as a series on HBO or Showtime, possibly the Scifi Channel (though they aren't really that great at handling their properties).

But given a choice between Firefly on FOX and no Firefly... I'll take FOX any day! I can always tape 'em and watch 'em in order...!

BLACKEYEDGIRL

I gotta say after seeing the Firefly fans on Sci-Fi Channel the only place I think that could bring it back, give it what it needs and allow the writers, producers and directors the freedom they need is Sci-Fi. Their ad showed me that they 'got it.' They didn't corn it up or cheese it out. They showed what the show was.

Face it, Andromeda is over. At least they should kill it cos last season was awful.

Battlestar Galactica, and both Stargate's have wrapped up Sci-Fi's Friday. Firefly is now replacing Andromeda. Considering Universal now must own the rights to Firefly (I'm sure Fox Entertainment is getting a nice sum from the DVDs and this syndication, but in all reality Fox can't still be the major right holder in this game. I believe I did read that when Joss asked them for the rights to the show and everything they gave it to him, cos they still think that when he comes back to TV it will be to Fox Entertainment (not necessarily the network), and you don't want to piss off someone as gifted as Joss. But I digress), or at least to the exact same characters under the name Serenity, and they own holdings in Sci-Fi. I can see Serenity the TV show ending up here. And I would love for nothing more. Sci-Fi has the financial backing to do this because they are like one of the highest rated cable channels. They are only this highly rated because they feed what Sci-Fi fans want, and if Sci-Fi fans come slobbering at the mouth to the network begging for more I can see them trying it. And honestly we've all turned on our friends and family to this show and how many of them called us after Objects in Space whining 'you mean that's really it? That's all there is?'

And who actually thinks that a Star Wars TV show is gonna work? PUHLEESE. That won't last a season. Not cos Fox will screw it up (well they will, btu even so) but because it will disappoint the fans cos there is no way to pump the kind of money into it that will ever really satisfy them.

But there's the Joss problem. Or not. Joss could easily executive produce and continue to have creative influence, blah blah blah & do movies. Remember he worked 3 TV shows at once, how? Capable staff. Remember Tim Minear, Jane Espenson, Drew Goddard, and the rest of the brilliant minds who have brought all of Joss' worlds alive? Well when The Inside is cancelled a good deal of them are without work again. And if you think for one second most of them wouldn't rush back to be a part of this you are sadly mistaken. Hell new blood could even be aquired in the genius who did Dead Like me and Wonderfalls (whos name escapes me right now). Don't think for a second that Joss wouldn't want to get these stories out in a luscious sprawling arc, instead of crammed into 3 one and a half hour movies (cos thats about how long Serenity is, it's almost shorter than the pilot). He's disenchanted with TV right now, but if the right opportunity with a network who would respect the story and what they have to tell he would do it.

My verdict? F*ck Fox, put this show where the real sci-fi fans are, on Sci-Fi. If offered the right opportunity I'm sure the old band would be happy to get back together. Maybe even add some fresh faces.

And no, I wouldn't go back to high school for some girl, but for that one boy, oh in a second.

While it would be cool for more Firefly (and it really would), I don't know if I see Fox doing it. The only show I can think of being brought back is Family Guy and it was only because the DVDs sold like mad.

Ironically, Fox had the choice between keeping Dark Angel going, or doing Firefly. They didn't feel they could afford two sci-fi shows with expensive sets. So they chose Firefly and they didn't even keep it going for a full season. I love the big networks that sacrifice quality for money. Bring it up to Canada, the government gives money to finance Canadian television shows like Andromeda. I hope if Fox does anything they sell the show to another network that won't play the show, make as much money as possible on it, and then cancel. That or try to spin a gimmick into it or mess with the creative process. Yup, quality over money...

I wish Fox would just make up its mind. They cancel the show and then when DVD sales are up and re-runs are doing well, they make a movie. Either do the show or sell it to someone who'll do it. It sucks here in limbo.

CARDIE

From some of the talk I've heard from the cast members about whether new Firefly would come back to television, I think that the agreement between Joss, Fox (the studio, not the network), and Universal was that Fox television would be the only production company authorized to produce additional Firefly television episodes for a given period, but that they would agree not to do so until Universal filmed its three Serenity movies or declined to do all three.

FOX the network has no claims on Firefly now. Once they canceled the show, they had no claim on any future episodes that they didn't authorize and pay a license fee for. (Fox the studio produced Buffy and Angel and they never appeared on the FOX network.) However, I'll bet if Universal sees big profits for the movies and wants more Firefly episodes on their SciFi channel for the purposes of cross-promotion, they could certainly license them from Fox--if Joss and the cast could be lured back to television. But I bet the deal says that no TV network not owned by NBC-Universal could broadcast a new Firefly.

At least, that's the way I'd have set things up if I were NBC-Universal's lawyer.

I respectfully disagree. I seem to recall an interview with Joss where he was comparing the two mediums and he was talking about how in telivision you can have the "small moments" because you have the time to. Joss is all about those small moments and drawing storylines out over an extended period of time and you just can't do that with a movie. I think that as soon as another brilliant idea pops in his head and he has the time, he will do another series.

Wow. Not nearly as negative as I thought this thread would be. I honestly believe it would work. and I can't hate FOX forever. THEY DID BRING BACK FAMILY GUY.

ONCE AGAIN, THE SERENITY MOVIES WILL BE GREAT, BUT WE NEED A SERIES TO KEEP US HAPPY. A 2-3 YEAR WAIT BETWEEN EACH MOVIE IS PRETTY DEPRESSING.
I'M SO SICK OF VOICING MY OPINION ABOUT A NEW SERIES, ONLY TO BE CUT DOWN ALL THE TIME. YES THE SERIES GOT CANCELLED. YES WE WERE ANGERED, BUT LIFE GOES ON.
NO NEED TO HATE THE TELEVISION IDEA FOREVER.

IF A NEW SERIES ISN'T MADE, WE WILL BE STUCK WITH A FEW GREAT MOVIES AND NOTHING MORE. IN THE FIREFLY REALM, THAT AINT NEARLY ENOUGH.

I totally agree, i always thought that sooner or later, if firefly was to really continue, it would have to go back to TV, for all the reasons mentioned above. Joss's specialty comes in the small moments, the moments that really make you care about the characters, and know that they are real and have feelings, even if that time is taken out of the main plot.

I was really disturbed when the mighty Whedon kept saying that he couldn't see Firefly coming back on the small screen, now that he's seen it big.

So actually, i've been thinking, you guys know that Q&A with joss that the serenitymovie site runs? well, frankly, i've thought of sending in a question:

"Joss, if given the chance, the time, the money, the actors, the inspiration, and the crew, would you take Firefly back to TV?"

I'm scared to ask this, because if he says 'no, I wouldn't do that...' well... that's sorta it. An equally problematic concern has also been that, with the 3 movies, which will supposedly explain about river, mal and (perhaps) blue sun, what mystery will be left in the 'verse to drive a Firefly show anyways?

so basically...

P.S.
I would love a return to series TV. It is my dearest fantasy. But I don't think it can happen. Studio lawyers on the left, studio lawyers on the right, and Joss is fed up with the medium's fickle execs. Yes, he likes the storytelling aspects of TV; but, he hates having the story get lopped off before it's been fully told, by bean-counting sycophants who wouldn't know quality if it gave them a lap dance (dead on that end, too ). At least with movies he gets to tell the whole tale before 'reality-based' executives decide he's a terrible artist (i.e., because he didn't make them enough Money)...

Oh yeah, I was upset as well. I know he was burned by FOX, but to just abandon the whole concept of it returning to TV because of one cancellation didn't seem his style. When the movie turns out huge, and he is given the chance to return to series form, I hope he reconsiders.
The more I think about this whole 3 movies only, the more desperately I want it to return to TV. Quite honestly, a movie is just a movie no matter how powerful it is. I used to think film was the best medium for a Drama, until Joss turned that upside down with Buffy. I just hope he can get me interested in movies again. Maybe after watching Serenity I will admit I was wrong, and eagerly anticipate the next 2 films.

It's strange you should mention Family Guy... When I first read that they were bringing FG back, I saw hope. My first thought was: "What about Firefly?"

I believe FG may actually be the key to whether Firefly comes back or not!

It's pretty rare for people like Fox to go back and reinstate a show that they've cancelled. It just about never happens. However... With FG, it was a similar situation as it is for us. The studio hated Family Guy, but the fans loved it. After it was cancelled, the fans kept wanting more of it, and when the DVD sets were released, they sold like hot cakes...

Sound familiar?

Could it be that they're using FG as a "test case"? Could it be that Fox are finally getting the message that it might be worth letting a show find it's legs before cancelling it on a whim?

Maybe, or maybe not... But there's no downside to supporting Family Guy, too...

I say give Fox a chance! Now that they have ALMOST messed up they might be a lot more amenable to provisions in everyone contract. That includes any Joss and the Actors have with the show.

Yes friends, I said “almost”. The movie is scoring well with the rabid fans and the word of mouth. Certainly well enough for Fox to know they Fux'ed up a good thing. After the BDM brings in the huge dollars then we can all take good long look DOWN at the Fox and say with final and everlasting confidence, “Shame on you!”.

I already know Fox made a mistake by not paying attention to a golden property. But even if they did make a mistake, having Firefly TV episodes/specials/mini-series in between major motion pictures would be nice.

The motion pictures can be for the lush grand fantasies we all enjoy.

The TV plays can be for the character and 'verse developments we all still want to have in-between the grand adventures.

Who knows? Maybe by the time Serenity VI hits the theaters we'll have been taken on such a ride by Joss and Crew that all of us will be begging Joss to give a silver bullet the Reaver that was Mal. And who better to deliver the bullet than River?

;-)
