Y'know, I saw a poll about a millin years ago. I don't remember what site . . . it may have been this one for all I know.
Anyway, the poll asked what character we thought would become the most important/vital to the crew had the show continued. Jayne came out on top with River being second.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person who saw more to that man than guns, muscles, and a mouth.

I just re-read this whole thread, and thought of another.

The first time Jayne is on screen with Book, Dobson and Simon is at the dinner table when they're eating Book's produce. Jayne's first line in that scene is, "We're just happy to be doin' good works." With a perfectly straight face. Classic Jayne.

And this is completely off thread, but have you noticed that in the Battle of Serenity footage, Mal kisses the cross he wears around his neck. In The Train Job, Mal tells Book, "If I'm your mission Shepherd, you'd best give it up. You're welcome on my boat, but God ain't." Clearly, at some point, Mal and God have a falling out.

And back to Jayne, when Book asks Mal if he minds if he says grace, Mal replies, "Only if you say it out loud." The camera then shows us Book, Jayne and Kaylee bowing their heads. Is it possible that Jayne is a religious man?

That is a big part of Mal's character. I believe he lost his faith when his comrades ditched him in serenity valley.

BUT this thread is dedicated to my Jayne, so I'm done talking about Mal now.

Sorry, but he's not YOUR Jayne. You're gonna have to share him. But he's a pretty big guy. I'm betting there'll be enough to go 'round.

We could draw a big chalk circle and put him in the middle. Then we could all stand around the circle and call him. That'll decide who's Jayne he is.

Yeah, and I'm the King of all Londinium.
Jayne bowed his head in that way of, 'Might be seein' him someday, better pave the way with a few prayers to get on his good side...'
Not religious really, just coverin' bases.

Isn't covering bases what religion is all about? (he says, ducking)

If it's real, you're covered, if it's not, it's just time wasted.

Well, I've always thought of it this way, if we have a reason to be religious (ex. We'll be damned for eternity if we aren't) then we're doing fine by being religious and living a good life.
If there is no resaon to be religious (ex. death is the end and there is no supreme being) then we really haven't lost anything my living a good life and being nice to people.

Okay, now I'm going to duck next to you. You cover my head, and I'll cover yours.

Ah, the CYA argument. Never bought it myself. 'Cause God would know your motivation and that you're not a true believer.

Damnation anyway.

Seems to me it's gotta come from the heart and not the head.

But what do I know, I'm agnostic.

And Jayne bowing his head? Just looked at it. He hesitates for just a second and his expression is one of "guess I should do this". Could be because he was trained as a boy to bow his head and say grace. And since he's in the presence of a Shepard and everyone else is doing it, he does it too. Not saying that's the only way too look at it, but that's how I interpret it.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I can so see a little Jayne getting wacked in the back of the head by his daddy for not bowing during grace.

Is Jayne Italian?

Sorry, please don't be offended if you're Italian. I was just thinking of that scene in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and they're at the dinner table and they keep whacking Tony in the head. And he's all p.o.'d 'cause they're messing up his hair.

I agree, abuse during childhood is the key to Cobb's generalised fearfulness and poor self-image.

When I first saw Firefly I thought Jane would be the most one dimentional character, and the most boring after a while, but he ended up being one of the best on the show for me.

I think it's all the little details that win me over. Little lines like "I like whacking 'em!" (when Mal points out that he doesn't need to hit the cows in 'Safe'), or his line in 'Objects in Space'. "If wishes were horses we'd all be eating steak!" The writers never miss a trick with Jane, and seeing his blunt reaction to everything that goes on is always fun. He's kind of a mix of Cordelia and Anya. Just what every crew of smugglers needs, huh?

"I'm a bloodsucking fiend! Look at my outfit!"

NOX2HED

Just recent to Firefly, caught it by lucky accident on sci-fi. Was totally blown away.

When first saw Jayne, thought, man he really looks like this dude I’d seen in bunch of other flicks, the first being ‘My Bodyguard’ (BITD). But no, couldn’t be, no way could he still look the same. But surenuff, it’s Adam!

His character’s always been similar, real hardass, but don’t think he’s ever been better cast than here.

Absolutely love the show. Crushed when discovered it’s only a partial season run. Well, at least glad I’m gonna savor experiencing it for the first time, and then there’s Serenity.

One of us is crazy, and it's not you!

Okay- nobody mentioned this one, so I gotta put it out there-
"River's a witch?" -Jayne
"Yes, Jayne, she's had congress with the Beast." -Wash
"She's in Congress?" -Jayne

Does he have a bad line in the whole show?
Adam Baldwin is a genius. I love Jayne and it kills me that the shows over and we don't get to watch his slow development. I think Ariel was a real turning point for him- strangely enough he really started to seem like more of a part of the crew after Mal let him live.

A few of my favorites...

"My John Thomas is about to pop off and fly around the room, there's so much tasty in here!"

He looks so excited. Like a child on Christmas day.

"Sick people are hi-larious."

Jayne: We'da been back first, 'cept there's something wrong with Inara's shuttle. She's done somethin' to it, Mal. Smells funny.
Inara: I told you, that's incense.
Jayne: So you say.

"I'm a show her good an' all I got man parts!"
