Hmmm, Long Time Gone by the Dixie Chicks! That's country, and it kinda reminds me of the whole feel of the show.

I'm a sillyass country music fan, though I'm more for the upbeat sappy variety (one of my little guilty pleasures is that I saw Sweet Home Alabama and enjoyed it... don't tell anyone :P)

As if there were something wrong with Alabama!

Okay....

Don't the Dixie Chicks sing a song about a sin wagon? An Inara song maybe?

Hee. Ya know, everyone up here seems to not like country music. Silly people. I love the stuff, and I've been down to Tennessee and Georgia and Indiana and loved it. The south is cool.

Would it be snotty of me to say that Indiana is not so much in the south?

Quote:

You're quite right about the mis-quoting... I was listening to the song and transcribing and got it wrong... As for being after Challenger, I think you're wrong there. I think this one was written in 1983 and, if you listen closely, then it references 'Capsule 12' and lots about dying in fire. I think it's referring to the three men who died in a fire in the Apollo program. I believe it was Apollo 12. The door jammed and the matting caught fire.

12 was one of the moon landings, the second I think. What your thinking of was one of the early ground tests of the Apollo capsule. Gus Grissim(sp) and two others died. America's only program losses till Challenger. After the fire NASA stopped useing pure O2.

OK... I've been thinking on it, and now I have prepared the definative (in my head) Firefly song list...

Mal - "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult
"You see me now a veteran,
Of a thousand psychic wars.
I've been living on the edge so long,
where the winds of limbo roar.
And I'm young enough to look at,
And far too old to see.
All the scars are on the outside.
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me."

That last line just seems to sum him up perfectly after Serenity Valley.

Zoe - "We all need some body to lean on" by Bill Withers
"Lean on me,
When you're not strong,
I'll be your friend,
I'll help you carry on."

Ever the faithful second in command. Always there for Mal.

Wash - "Rocketman" By Elton John
"I miss the Earth so much,
I miss my wife.
It's lonely out in space"

Well, Wash IS the pilot and I couldn't find a song about juggling geese. The only other option was "Girl all the bad guys want" by Bowling for Soup.

Kaylee - "Kaylee" by Venice.
"Kaylee!
You should be in love with somebody,
Somebody like me!"

Well, one of our boys and girls deserves a song named after them. Plus it's a peppy little thing, just like Kaylee.

Jayne - "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood
"On the day I was born,
Nurses all gathered 'round,
to gaze in wide wonder,
at the joy they had found.
The head nurse spoke up,
said leave this one alone,
She could tell right away,
I was bad to the bone!"

Really? What else?

Innara - "Takin' care of Business" by Bachmann Turner Overdrive
"Well I'll be takin' care of business,
Ev'ry day.
Takin' care of Business,
Ev'ry way.
Takin' care of Business,
It's all mine.
Takin' care of Business,
and working overtime"

"Well, you know how wrapped up she gets in her work... Tell her to squeeze it dry, send it off." Oh I'm a bad, bad man.

Book - "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" by Various Artists
"Mine eyes have seen the Glory of the coming of the Lord,
He is trampling out the vintage where the Grapes of Wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightning from his terrible, swift sword,
His truth is marching on."

I think this song, aside from being really cool, captures the dichotomy of Book's Eclesiastical and Military personalities.

Simon - "Let's face the music and dance" by Frank Sinatra
"There may be trouble ahead.
But while there's moonlight,
And music,
And love,
And romance...
Let's face the music, and Dance"

Let's just hope that there really ISN'T any trouble ahead for Simon and Kaylee... And River.

River - "Phoenix" by Julia Ecklar
"My wings are made of tungsten,
My flesh of glass and steel,
I am the joy of Terra for,
the power that I wield.
Once upon a life-time,
I died a pioneer.
Now I sing within this vessel's heart,
does anybody hear."

I still think this is a hauntingly beautiful melody and perfect for River... Or rather, River as Serenity.

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.
The silence on Lester Tourville's flag bridge was absolute
And then the spell was broken as Shannon Foraker looked up from her console from where she had just sent a seemingly innocent command to the main computers of State Security's finest Superdreadnoughts.
"Oops." She said.

That was Apollo I. NASA also drastically changed the hatch design.

Two funky creepy things about the Apollo I tragedy: If Grissom hadn't got such a hard time for the Liberty Bell splashdown, he would have never insisted that the hatch for the Apollo I capsule be designed the way it was, trapping them all in with no explosive bolts.

Further, after the Russians started declassifying documents from the Soviet space program, it came to light that one of their early tests at Baikonur ended in almost the exact same way. Instead of it being faulty wiring tho, like Apollo, it was an alcohol swab and a an exposed electric element. The cosmonaut was swabbing a sensor stuck to his skin, threw the swab over his shoulder where it hit the element and whoosh! The pure O2 atmosphere exploded.

We've had some real space program tragedies, but the USSR has us waaaaay beat.

End thread hijack!

I have found THEE perfect song about River!!!

Here are the Riverest parts-

--Prayer by Disturbed--
a gift to add on to your pain and suffering
another truth you can never believe
has crippled you completely
all the cries you’re beginning to hear
trapped in your mind, and the sound is deafening

living just isn't hard enough
burn me alive, inside
living my life's not hard enough
take everything away

another nightmare about to come true
will manifest tomorrow
another love that I've taken from you
...
bring to life everything that you fear
live in the dark, and the world is threatening

This song is good for Mal.

DOBSON: I'm supposed to be meeting my wife's sister. I've only got a few days to see her...

ZOE: I wish there was another way...

DOBSON: Oh, no, no. That woman is like a dragon. I mean, I believe she has a tail. If there's any other moons we need to visit, or if we could just

hhmmm... overall maybe Night Ranger's Restless Kind .

Off on your own, it's a lonely ride
Seein' the things only seen through your eyes.
Pick yourself up, gonna try it again
Knowin' that this time your reachin' the end.
Then a voice inside, made me feel that I could fly
And you'll be there by my side forever.

We're the restless kind,
Lay your broken dreams upon the world.
And we will rise, we're the restless kind
In the morning light, see the tears of joy fall from your eyes, and we will rise.
We're the restless kind.

Not all of it fits, but the parts that do are shiney.

Ohh!!! Good choice!! But then, anything from the "When the Devil Dances" soundtrack is pretty good for people of a military background.

Heather Alexander's 'March of Cambreadth' would make an excellent theme song for Zoe, Mal and Jayne.
"How many of them can we make DIE!"

Okay I've got the best song for the whole show...

Select to view spoiler:

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me

Ha HA!!!

Jut had a brilliant thought of a song fitted to a moment... Perhaps I've been watching 'Once more with feeling' too often, but how about Mal and Saffron dancing, in Serenity's cargo hold, to the strains of "It's cold outside" by Tom Jones and Cerys?

Reverse the roles - She the preadtor, he the shy and retiring - and it fits the pair nicely... Particularly if you consider the line 'It's cold outside' what with them being in space and all... Or even when he found her on that ice-world 'Baby it's up to your knees out there!'

You know that part in "Top Gun" where they're having the mock dogfight over the Nevada desert and Kenny Loggin's "Danger Zone" is playing? Well, now whenever I watch the part in "Serenity" where they're trying to outmanuever the Reaver ship, I think of that song.

I heard Blondie's "Call Me" on the radio today. Made me think of Inara. Hummina hummina hummina...

The song "Weather With You" by Crowded House always sort of reminds me of Mal. It's a bit odd, considering that Mal technically can just pack up and leave the weather behind moving from planet to planet. But whenever they get to the verse about, "Things ain't cookin' in my kitchen/strange affliction wash over me/Julius Caesar and the Roman empire/couldn't conquer the blue sky," I always think about Mal. And, you know, if you assume that weather means the general emotional climate of passengers and crew, he sort of does take the weather with him.

Here is a song for Mal that I figured someone would have mentioned by now, but since no one has....

Desperado

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of heats is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no youger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're loosin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it's too late

-----------------------------------------

Queensryche's "Jet City Woman" made me think of Mal/Inara:

I see her face everywhere, can't get her out of my mind.
Whenever I'm alone I'm thinking, there's a part missing from my life.
Wonder where I'd be without your love holding me together.
Now I'm watching the time tick, tick away.
Face grows longer every day.
Fortunes are lost on the women I've seen, but without you I can't breathe.
You're the air to me!

Heard another song which really reminds me of the show, Santa Maria by Trooper. Here's the lyrics:

With only fear and good judgement
Holding us back
We sailed out on the Northern Sea
With a boat load of crazy people
Including the shotgun and me

Does somebody know how to drive this thing
Yelled the captain as he fell to his knees
I think I mighta had a little too much today
Take me to my cabin, please

Cruisin' on a sardine boat
Loaded with crazy people
And we shall be the Santa Maria
Looking for a brave new world

The first mate shouted from the crow's nest
I think I might see land out there
Nobody moved
From where they were laying
Cause nobody really cared

Does somebody know how to drive this thing
Yelled the captain as he fell to his knees
I think I mighta had a little too much today
Take me to my cabin, please

The first mate shouted from the crow's nest
I think I might see land out there
But nobody moved
From where they were laying
Cause nobody really cared

Cruisin' on a sardine boat
Loaded with crazy people
And we shall be the Santa Maria
Looking for a brave new world

This ain't the end, I saw you again
Today
I had to turn my heart away
You smiled like the sun
Kisses for everyone
And tales - it never fails

ARCHER

Pardon my late entry into the field, but since it's for Miss Kaythryn, well, I'm obligated to enter some verses.

For River, well, for a brief second in War Stories, she gives me a real Drowning Pool feel. "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" as it happens.

One, nothing wrong with me.
Two, nothing wrong with me.
Three, nothing wrong with me.
Four, nothing wrong with me.
One, something's got to give.
Two, something's got to give.
Three, something's got to give.
Nooooooooooooooooooooow.

For Inara and Mal, Firewater's She's the Mistake comes to mind.

"She's the mistake I've been dyin' to make, since I can remember..."

Bon Jovi's "Dead or Alive" gives me a Mal feel, along with Warren Zevon's "Renegade", as I mentioned in a thread a while back.

As for Veteran of the Psychic Wars, I always preferred the second verse.

"You ask me why I'm weary, why I can't speak to you. You blame me for my silence, say it's time I changed and grew. Well the war's still going on dear, and there's no end that I know, and I can't stand forever. I can't say if we're ever gonna be free."

For Jayne, there's no other song than Thirteen.

"Bad luck wind been blowin' at my back. I was born to bring trouble to wherever I'm at.

Got the number 13 tattooed on my neck.

When the ink starts to itch, then the black will turn to red.

I was born in the soul of misery, never had me a name. They just gave me the number when I was young.

Got a long line of heartache, I carry it well.

The list of lives I've broken reach from here to hell.

Bad luck wind been blowin' at my back, I pray you don't look at me, I pray I don't look back."

Days of the New, Die Born can be a Mal song, especially in relation to the Alliance. If you like that country/rock hybrid feel, that's one to look for.

I am cold and I don't know why
Said you got to keep me warm
You will run, run from my eyes
They stare you down and make you burn
I am the king, the king of the jungle
I'm the little dog
So the king of the jungle makes me humble

I will not die born
I will not go down
'cause this is not my home
For any fears at all, any fears at all

Keep me running, keep me running wild
Keep me innocent

The sand is hot, it burns my feet
and I'm a little tired,
don't know what I'm gonna do with this
I am gonna run
Make it worth, worth my while
Make it worth, worth my while

I will not die born
And I will not go down
'cause this is not my home
For any fears at all, fears at all

Keep me running, keep me running wild
I am wild dog
Said it gets me high it gets me around
Everybody's walls,
I don't feel no pain
Cause I am numb, numb from the fall

Yeah it's hard for me to make a little change
I don't have to change at all

I will not die born
And I will not go down
'cause this is not my home
For any fears at all, fears at all

Back to River... I was pondering (when I had more spare time on my hands) tinkering with the possibility of mixing music videos from Firefly scenes. So what comes up for River? Joy Division, She's Lost Control Again.

Confusion in her eyes that says it all -
She's lost control
And she's clinging to the nearest passer-by
She's lost control
And she gave away the secrets of her past
And said "I've lost control again."

And she turned to me
and took me by the hand
and said "I've lost control again"
and how I'll never know just why
or understand
She said "I've lost control again"
And she screamed out, kicking on her side
And seized up on the floor -
I thought she'd died
She said "I've lost control again"
She's lost control again -
she's lost control

Well I had to phone her friend
to state her case and say
she's lost control again
And she showed up all the errors
and mistakes
and said "I've lost control again"
But she expressed herself in many
different ways
until she'd control again
And walked upon the edge of no escape
and laughed "I've lost control again"
She's lost control again,
she's lost control (2)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand. That's what springs to mind tonight. I'm sure more will come to mind.

Well, except that for Jayne I was going to mix some Vera scenes and add in the opening "Chosen One" soundtrack from the Sopranos. "Woke up this morning, got yourself a gun, your mama always said you'd be the chosen one."

-----------------------------------------
And now I'm in a Springsteen mood.

"Maybe you got a kid, maybe you got a pretty wife.
The only thing that I ever had been botherin' me my whole life."

Parts of this song are just dead on River

Vertical Horizon- He’s everything you want

Somewhere there's speaking
It's already coming in
Oh and it's rising at the back of your mind
You never could get it
Unless you were fed it
Now you're here and you don't know why

You're waiting for someone
To put you together
You're waiting for someone to push you away
There's always another wound to discover
There's always something more you wish he'd say

But you'll just sit tight
And watch it unwind
It's only what you're asking for
And you'll be just fine
With all of your time
It's only what you're waiting for

And this is a perfect song for Mal and Inara

Alicia Keys- Fallin’

I keep on fallin’
In and out of love
With you
Sometimes I love ya
Sometimes u make me blue
Sometimes I feel good
At times I feel used
Lovin you darlin’
Makes me so confused

Oh, oh , I never felt this way
How do you give me so much pleasure
And cause me so much pain
Just when I think
I've taken more than would a fool
I start fallin’ back in love with you
