Much as I hate to behave like a grownup, I have this feeling that someone has to, so here goes:

Doin’ the math, here—Universal says the BDM has to gross $80 million in order for them to consider making a sequel. Sales of the DVD set are at around 500,000. If we assume that 1/3 of those were to people who already had one set, that means roughly 333,333 people bought DVDs. If each of those people sees the movie twice the first week, and twice the second week at $8.50 per ticket, that’s $11,333,322.00 generated directly by the browncoats. This leaves us $68 Million and change short. We need the dollars of civilians to make up the difference, or all our hard work comes to an end with the release of Serenity. Even if I’m off by 50%, we need a bunch of civilian dollars.

Therefore, it’s important not to behave in a manner which will turn off those civilians. Joyously involved is cute, obsessed, deranged and creepifying is not. Please remember this as we parade through the mall in our costumes.

The most damaging thing we can do is annoy others in the theatre who are trying to watch the movie for the first time. Book said it best when he said that there’s a special hell reserved for those who talk at the theatre. Ditto chanting, singing, foot stomping, etc. Save it for the midnight shows. If you must express your delight, you are permitted to strike the palms of your hands together rapidly, repeatedly, in quick succession, only until the dialogue starts up again.

Again with the costumes, we love your Jayne hat. I have one my ownself. After the lights go down, it’s not a fashion statement, it’s just an annoyance to the folks sitting behind you trying to see the screen. When the lights go down, take it off if there’s anyone sitting behind you, and we really hope there is. If you’re alone in the theatre, you can leave your hat on, but it would be respectful to remove it to honor the end of our Firefly/Serenity phenomenon. Dong Ma?

You make very good points which I totally agree with. I hate when people talk in the theater.
OTOH, I think the 80 mill they want is globally, not domestically, so when it's all said and done, with our overseas fans, I don't see any reason why that goal can't be reached.

Sex and violence on the big screen, where it belongs.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I wish you had told that to all the people in the theater where I saw Corpse Bride yesterday.

Also, the profit made from the many series of screenings Universal had for Serenity this past year go toward opening weekend; from what I understand.

Don't forget all the profits from the book, the "Visual Companion", "Serenity Magazine", the graphic novels, the roleplaying game and eventually I assume some official merchandise.

why do you say that 1/3 of the dvd sales would be repeat buyers? I would have thought it would be the other way round where for every 1 dvd set bought it was prolly watched by at least 3-4 people, I know a good few who I lent the set to who are definately going to see it at least once if not a few times. and as others have said when you add up the international takings and merchandising, soundtrack and everything I doubt there'll be much worry.

that said I totally agree with yr warning to behave ourselves in front of the civilians, I'm all for a good shindig but save it for the pub afterwards...

Everyone I chat with has 2 sets--one to watch and one to loan out.

I bought a second set and donated it to my local public library.

Any way you crunch the numbers, we need help from the civilians.

And coming in at $160 million couldn't hurt, either.

I've purchased four copies so far so yes, I think it's safe to say there are many repeat purchases.

Thats a good point with repeat sales, but a lot of people I've lent the set to will be going to see the bdm twice, and they don't even have there own sets.

So this $80 million, doessnt just have to be from cinema ticket sales then?

As I understand it, it's the studio's percentage of theatre ticket sales (starts out at 80-90% but diminishes each week 'til it hits a minimum of 30%) plus DVD sales plus TV rights if it's ever broadcast plus the licensing rights from the books, action figures, etc.

But that's a very small percentage of the purchase price for books, toys, etc.
