I thought it'd be nice to start a lighter thread relating to the BDM, considering that so many are taking the movie so seriously (and believe me, I'm one of them). So,

Let's hear the things people noticed in the film that harken back to the show.

Someone on a different thread mentioned that the spacesuits Mal, Zoe, and Jayne used were the same ones from the show. I didn't notice that, but I like the thought of it.

Also, in the scene with Jayne and Kaylee cleaning up the cargo hold, Kaylee is figeting with a catalyser, the infamous part from Out of Gas. And she had that knowing smile on her face!

OK, what else?

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

Not sure.... Although is it just me or does Simon look different in the movie? To me it looks like his hair is different. Perhaps darker. Also he looks more musculare in the movie. Also Book's hair just seemed different as well. Maybe it's just me....

Was "Vera" the same? I can't remember.

Was that Vera in the final shootout? I was having a hard time paying attention to details at that point.

Honestly it's a little hard to remember every thing correctly. I've only seen it once. Hope to see it tomorrow or Thursday for a 2nd time. Although I think I saw Jayne with a shiny silver plated gun looking like Vera. Not sure.

I got a good look at the gun. I don't have the DVDs so many you guys can help me out. I don't remember Vera being a full automatic weapon. When it fired from the space suit, wasn't it like a single-shot or a semi-auto? But the gun Jayne had was large with a long and thick barrel, having a green LED near or on the tip. I don't think its the same weapon.

It maybe wasn't the same gun for that scene. Although at some time I think I saw it.

I believe the spacesuits were the same. I thought they looked familiar but it didn't actually occur to me until you mentioned it. As for Kaylee and the catalyser, I have seen it three times now and I missed that. I will definitely be looking for it when I see it again this weekend! Thanks for the heads up!

MALBADLATIN

SPOLIERS = Yikes

Mal falls onto a grating in the episode Out Of Gas - close up of his face and blood dripping onto the grate

Mal falls onto a grating in the movie. - close up of Mals bloody face at the Mr. Universe back-up signal feed platform.

War Stories: during the torture scene - fake blood inadvertently stains Alan's contact lens. source: Commentary on the DVD.

Movie: Close up on Mal after a fight with the Operative - one eye has blood around the iris area.

Books hair: Firefly- It's tied up in a bun. Movie- It's in Cornrows.

There are a whole lotta winks and nods given to the TV series via the movie.

Speculation alert:

The gun Jayne uses during the Mr Universe reaver scene looks sort of like a small gatling gun with some sci fi modifications. Vera looks more like a AR-15 assault rifle with sci fi modifications.

Zoe uses a pistol gripped lever action short barrel shotgun and I think it's the same gun used in many of the Firefly episodes. ?

At the end, when Mal is sitting in the pilot seat, he flicks those 3 switches.

And apparently, when the crew are walking of the ship at Beaumonde, Jayne can be seen wearing his hat from The Message.

In the scene where Mal gets the wave from Inara, he stands there and talks to her with no shirt on. That big-ass scar near his right shoulder (which I initially took to be a war wound) is actually the scar from "Train Job" where Krull chunked that big old knife at him.

I thought it was interesting that Mal showed obvious scars, when we saw at least one case where a person's entire insides were swapped out without leaving a visible scar (Simon needed his instruments to detect it). Maybe just variation in the level of medical care available? Or maybe just to make Mal look cool with his shirt off?

I noticed the catalyzer too. I assumed it had come off the Reaver's shuttle along with the other junk, and Kaylee was scavenging. I could almost hear her thinking, "Gee, it's nice to have a spare, finally."

Not only did I *notice* Mal flipping the three magic switches; I *anticipated* it! "Is he gonna flip the... yes he is!!" I consider it a nice tribute to Wash, or maybe to Alan himself (who originated the three-switches bit).

During Mal's big speech, Jayne and Simon both take a drink from a bottle with the Blue Sun logo on it. That was the only one I caught my second time around.

Jayne does tote Vera in the movie, but not against the Reavers.

Oh and this may just be me, but Mr. Universe and the fembot, total props to Buffy for that one.

Those are the only ones I can think of right now, if I think of more, I'll be sure to post. And next time see what other Blue Sun stuff you see, I hope we haven't heard the last of them.

Well, with Tracey in The Message, they were *smuggling*. It was a big operation worth lots of money, thus the careful stitching to conceal it. With Mal, well, he got stabbed. It wasn't a clean cut, they probably didn't have all the supplies, etc. They had no real motivation to make it invisible.

Not to mention, didn't Simon say something like, "You really should have let me do this sooner?" while he was stitching that one up?

But while we're on the subject of scars in that scene... I noticed one on his arm (where he was grazed in the pilot ep), and another that's probably supposed to be the gut shot from Out of Gas.

things I noticed?

*River wears goggles.
-In mrs. macolm reynolds he wears the same goggles to open the cockpit hatch.

*Where jayne wears the tiny boy scout shirt (which makes him look VERY hot) underneath is that one pinup with the censored eyes over her.
-i can't recall the episode where he wears this in.

*malcolm scars and the reference to being stabbed in the place where the operative tries to paralyze him at.
-Serenity ep (top right shoulder), War Stories (sternum), Shindig (lower right side of back).

*river's boots.
-uhh she wears them in practically all the episodes except for train job. lol.

*Simon's jacket he wears when they land in town.
-the message.

*Jayne's devil shot glass.
-i dunno why but it has some significance...it bothers me greatly b/c i bet it is.

*things actually fall down while the ship shakes violently!
-we never got to see that in the show! I'm so happy ^_^. I always questioned this and now i know. Some things are bolted down and some aren't.

*river's blue jacket.
-is it me or is that inara's? I seen it before, but can't remember where from.

*sticking needles into river's brain
-they stuck it in the side, but it's needles...she mentions this once in the episode, but it's seen in train job just before she wakes up.

*Mal falls into the screen when getting the crap beated out of him.
-out of gas.

*Wash still has that damn hawaiian shirt...lol

*mal tosses the operative the red button beacon panel.
-out of gas

*Every place they've landed at were up in flames...

*the ship that chases them from the begging i s the same at the end.
-when they pulled the crazy ivon, i could have sworn it's the same one.

*I think it's been down more than once, but seeing the kitchen area before it's shown. I know they did it for the cockpit, but i specifically remember seeing mal's pants in the shot.
-Serenity.

*Mal's stained eye at the end.
-War stories.

God...ok. I'm done. this is tiring...i'm sure there's a whole heap more..but in short, I notice a LOT...except for the blue sun logo. i never see those damn things until someone mentions it.

Actually, it's not the same hat. It has more strips and it's not the same colours. Adam was wearing the hat in a picture when those big cakes were delivered to the set.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1577

There were two more Blue Sun logos on boxes in the cargo bay. One can be seen behind Simon when he walks up to the catwalk and I can't remember where the second one is. It's on a box somewhere in the cargo bay. Also in the cargo bay are some dumbbells but not the weightlifting set as far as I could tell.

Also, as River's teacher is finishing up her lesson about the new solar system, to the left of the screen behind her is a list of planets, possibly Core planets since Osiris and Londinum are mentioned. But also on the list is Shadow, Mal's home planet. Is Mal from a Core planet? And apparently Mal's was born in 2468, according to the file the Operative is looking at. That makes him, what, 50?

In the TV series Simon pays people to get River out. In the movie, Simon gets River out. Or maybe it was stated in the TV series that Simon got help into getting River out, which means he probably got her out in the first place as was shown at the beginning of the movie. I don't know, correct me if I'm wrong.

Ain't this a fun little game. One more reason to see the movie again. Here's another:

Joss posted this on the OB

Post subject: Worst. Movie. Ever.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

was probably "Summer Holiday" with Mickey Rooney. Can you believe that kid was the biggest star in the world? Funny world.

Meanwhile, I'm just rounding out the weekend with a little praise for my dear peeps. Considering everything we've had to overcome, this is an extraordinary achievment. And you guys have been in the front lines. I lurk, I know all. So thanks. Some of you might know that this flick means more than a little to me.

Yes, the second weekend will tell all, as we've always known. I'm not here to push you guys -- you push yourselves way harder than I could anyway. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the message out to the guys that aren't you, that don't know any of you, and that don't run into someone who saw the film. I'll be hounding the extremely patient Uni execs on that very subject. Like the lady said, "People have to know".

It's not that there HAS to be a sequel. It's just that I've got so many IDEAS...

WARNING: SPOILERS :)

Interesting Biblical tidbit from the movie:

Select to view spoiler:

Just before the Operative kills Mr. Universe he says "There, it's done, now give me my 30 coin." (or something darn close to that.) I think it's a Biblical reference to Judas's "payoff" for turning Jesus in (30 pieces of silver, IIRC). Interesting note: Judas didn't survive either, although he took his own life. I think Mr. Universe knew he was going to die whether he cooperated or not.

Ok, here's one big thing I noticed that I might just be making up after the fact, I want your opinions.

It seems that Wash's death really had little point in the scheme of things. Sure, it added that hard twinge of drama for all the fans, but it did nothing in the way of plot or exposition. Here's what I noticed...

When the crew is outdoors on Miranda, just before the scene inside the crashed ship, they're coming to the realization that the whole population just lay down to die. One of the last things said about this is when Jayne says something to the effect of 'they all just died for no good reason'

As he says this, the camera pans to the right and focuses solely on Wash, only wash, and holds for a moment. Hmmm.. foreshadowing, or just my addlepated self finding meaning where ther is none? comments?

Simon had a completely different haircut. So did Mal, actually. Both have longer hair than they did in the series, and both have more modern cuts instead of the distinctly Old West styled cuts they used to have. It looks better and it's honestly more believable. And I want Simon's haircut.

Book had cornrows and a fairly bushy beard, where in the series his hair was pulled back into a bun (the movie is an enourmous improvement here).

Oddly enough, the women looked pretty good in the series, and the movie improvements weren't really as dramatic.

Vera was a tarted up Saiga shotgun (or AK of some sort; hard to tell under the plastic) in the series (usual scifi stuff: tons of plastic glued onto a real gun in order to make no sense at all). In the movie, however, Jayne uses an HK MP5SD with a bunch of crap glued on and an HK MP5K with a bunch of crap cut off (it's the small machine pistol strapped to his chest that he uses to 'authorize' his way into the vault). Aside from Zoe's Mare's Leg carbine and Mal and Jayne's iconic pistols, none of the guns carry over from the series.

And Mal's rifle is really, really, really ugly.

Actually, what he says is "Now give my 30 coin, but I got a newswav for you—" Presumably he was on his way to telling the Operative to go to hell, but didn't quite get there. Paying close attention to the scene gives the distinct impression that he didn't expect to be killed (at least not right there, like that) and wasn't at all happy about betraying Mal and his crew. In that light, the Judas reference comes off more as a defiant insult than anything else.

QUICKSAND

More recently above was reference to the departure of Wash: there was a shot also in the dining area on the ship, of a holster'd gun (Mal or Jayne's) in the foreground, and Wash looking up in the background. Maybe this is just crazy fans like me making a connection where there is none. Joss didn't even know about the Forbidden Planet reference until just the other week.

TWO -- I don't find it beyond the realm of possibility that Simon lied to the crew about what he knew about River. Those two are closer than Simon and any of the other crew, as is evidenced by how he smacks Mal around a couple times.

THREE -- Several people above noted Jayne's "Boy Scout Uniform" ... look again. I know for a fact I read "Security" on that uniform, and when I go back to watch it a 3rd time this weekend, I'm going to see if he picks it up during the heist. I'm not 100% certain it happens on screen, but for him to pick up a souvenir would not be out of character... 'specially cuz the uniform don't fit.

FOUR -- The Biblical reference made by The Operative. Supremely good catch, but that's just Joss being Joss. The very first time I watched the pilot of the TV show, I did a double take when Mal said, "I'm sure it was a real tale of woe," in reference to Simon and River. This is a reference to Romeo and Juliet. So Mal reads... and not just poems. :b (try not to faint).

FIVE -- Pointless death always occurs in a battle, and Mal and Zoe know this. Yes, I hate to see ANY of these wonderful characters go, but if anything it was a double-whammy on Zoe; first, she cracks for the ONLY TIME in the entire series, even when Reavers were closing in on the first episode, she only got slightly tense. When it's all said and done, she pulled it together so fast I kinda felt WORSE for Wash, because there was no mourning. She keeps everything inside so tight, she might indeed be the scariest character here, giving River a run for her money. That's ONE.... TOUGH.... LADY.

SIX -- Beginning, Operative, "You cannot make me mad." End, Mal, "You shot me in the back. Guess I must've made you pretty mad." ... I only caught this on 2nd viewing. But then again, I may be stupid.

SEVEN -- I noticed the DOB for Mal as well, I'll need to look harder. There's a short bio for Mal next to it, but it seems to be the kind of thing where we have to wait for the DVD so we can pause it. Don't tell ME Joss don't care about nerds like us.

And finally, were Mingo and Fanty ever mentioned by name on the TV show? I think they were, but can't remember which episode. One of you will know, I'm sure.

I don't recall them being metioned in the series, but in #3 of the comic, a certain someone we know does drop their name.

I didn't notice it on the dash, but there was a big red button used to open/close the blast doors near the end that deffinitly reminded me of Wash's red button.

I noticed in Mal's bio that it said he was the son of a rancher. It was there very shortly, but still there. Little reference for the TV fans to enjoy.

Mal's Rifle is a heavily sci-fi modified M-16A2...I deal with that gun on a daily basis...I know the build of that gun.

Er, no, actually. Mal's rifle is an AR-180 that's been only moderately screwed with.

Someone tried to say that the ship they are chased by in the beginning of the movie is the same one as the one from the end of the first episode. Thats definately wrong. The one from the episode was easily twice the size of Serenity herself. The one in the movie is barely bigger than the suped up mule.

The gun in the foreground is Zoe's. If I remember correctly this is when Jayne is bad mouthing Mal and his fighting in the war.... I could be wrong, I will correct my self tonight if I am. I am 20 minutes away from my third viewing of the movie.

The comic is called Serenity. There are three issues, each with three different covers available. I have 8 of the 9 permutations, which I bought from Midtown Comics online. It may be available in your local comics shop (if any).

The comics were written by Joss, published by Dark Horse, and beautifully drawn and colored. They depict events that occur between the TV series and the movie.

True. That Puppy was not the nasty Trans-U from the pilot.

BUT...

As Serenity zooms along to go head-to-head with the Operative's Fleet, one of the tag-along Reaver nasties in the fleet is the Pilot episodes Trans-U, complete with lousey core-containment (Serenity center-screen, Reaver fleet behind: Trans-U on left and down).

DARKJESTER

1) The patch that Jayne finds under the shirt of the guard he clotheslines on Lilac (can you use 'clothesline' as a verb?) later shows up on his shirt in the Maidenhead bar. Guess he likes souvenirs.

2) Unfortunately, the CGI high-tech bow that Inara uses in the final battle does a disappearing act. Two seconds after we first see it, when she is in the background of the action, it is a regular target bow she is holding. A little later, she's holding the Battle Bow again. One of the very few "mistakes" I saw.

3) One other "mistake" - when Mal and Inara escape from the Operative at the Training House and get in her shuttle, Mal is carrying something in his hand, something about the size of a grenade. It's explained in the Visual Companion script, but the explanation is cut from the actual film.

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

I bought from Things From Another World (tfaw.com), Dark Horse's suggested dealer, and they had the appropriate price and all the covers. I think they were running out of the Captain, maybe, but they were great to me when I got all antsy about a delivery date. Imagine that. An antsy Browncoat. :)

ALSO, there was a thread about the wild animal handlers credit and where were the animals, and I went back today, and YES! there were black chickens in a cage for about .01 seconds in the quick, shaky shots as the reavers land at the beginning.

I noticed a lot more Blue Sun stuff than I noticed the first time through Firefly.

Jayne wears his shirt with the gun on it... is it Fighting Elves or Troublemaker? Wasn't that in the series too?

I also noticed this time (not really from the show, just something bittersweet) the way that Zoe, our resident TOUGH LADY, after piloting an impossible escape and confronting her captain, melts without any defenses into her short, funny protective husband's embrace. :(

JADEHAND

I just got back from my fourth viewing. Some of these have been mentioned.

Blue Sun logos: 1 on a crate as Mal walks into the hold the first time (end of the 4.5 minute "1er"). Almost imediately after: loading the mule, Kaylee on the ground working on the mule 2 crates in the background. and the glass in the dinning area. Missed the one on Mr. Universes' screen (Guess I'll have to go watch it again.

The camera hold on Wash after "no reason". (I really only noticed after reading it here. *sniff*)

My favourite catch (and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but hell I only caught it on the 4th viewing): Mal crawls out of the er..crawlspace, and head towards the bridge to confront River. to his right: "Kaylee's Room" the sign.

I wish they had left some of the stuff from the VC script, like The Op finding info on screen about Inara, which leads him to show up there. and a better introduction of her there "teaching".

I don't know what this "teaching" is of which you speak, but I have a video file of the Serenity clip they played at conventions like a year ago... I think there's a brief shot of that "teaching" thrown in. Cuz it sure wasn't in the movie.

Also, the comics were not written by Joss, they were written by Brett Matthews, who wrote the Firefly episode "Heart of Gold," which in my opinion is the worst episode of the series. I have, though, read the first 2 of the 3 comics... and they're pretty cool, I must admit. If that's what the next 3 episodes of the TV show were going to be like, Fox will truly never be forgiven.

XOXO

It seems that Wash's death really had little point in the scheme of things. Sure, it added that hard twinge of drama for all the fans, but it did nothing in the way of plot or exposition. Here's what I noticed...

When the crew is outdoors on Miranda, just before the scene inside the crashed ship, they're coming to the realization that the whole population just lay down to die. One of the last things said about this is when Jayne says something to the effect of 'they all just died for no good reason'

As he says this, the camera pans to the right and focuses solely on Wash, only wash, and holds for a moment. Hmmm.. foreshadowing, or just my addlepated self finding meaning where ther is none? comments?

I agree with you on that...Wash's death was, IMHO, completely uncalled for. Some other foreshadowing that people were going to die was Zoe's dialog when they were robbing the security vault right before the Reaver attack. River points out the guy pulling out the gun, and Zoe says "Do you know what the definition of a hero is? A hero is someone who gets other people killed."
