NOTE: I understand the purpose of this review, in that it's not really a review, more a "here's the scary/gory/illegal/bad-behaviour things people might not like to see in a movie" commentary. I just, y'know, felt like laughing at it a bit

I like that the fact that Inara shows cleavage is important enough to mention in a sentance that mentions she is a courtesan. You'd think that being a courtesan was bad enough, but a courtesan that shows cleavage? Heinous!

Some drink and/or smoke while a woman sees her husband be killed

That makes it sound like the guy died in a smoky bar!

The Operative and those he works for obviously have bad attitudes for wanting River dead

No, really?

Phrases: "Go monkey sh*t," "Son of a whore," "You sultry minx," "I am not a moron," "Dumb ass," "Damn right I do," "Are you insane?" "Something sure the hell ain't right," "She is starting to damage my calm," "Banged up all to hell," "I aim to misbehave," "Pretty damn close," "Bastard," "I'm a leaf in the wind," "The hell with this" and "Get your ass back on the line.

What's wrong with "She is starting to damage my calm" and "I'm a leaf in the wind" exactly? Oddness.

We see a woman's sexy looking legs as she passes by

OH GOD! MY MIND HAS BEEN SCARRED FOR LIFE!

We see Mal shirtless when he's awakened

OH GOD! MY MIND HAS BEEN SCARRED FOR LIFE EVEN MORE!

...no, seriously.

Mal tells Inara (over a video connection) that Kaylee misses her (with the crew -- that's eavesdropping -- reacting to that, although what's being implied is not clear).

Okay, eavesdropping bad, but, y'know, funny. But I think they are either reading too much into that bit, or they've been reading far too much slash fic...

River attacks and kills many Reavers by various means

WOO!

Now, the actual, serious review bit:

But what makes the film work rather well is this little "universe" that Whedon has populated with appealing characters. Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin get the best moments playing the Han Solo type characters, but the likes of Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk and Jewel Staite are also decent in their respective parts.

For all of the whiz-bang special effects that George Lucas has put into the latest trilogy of the "Star Wars" films, he's mostly omitted what made his original and now this film so engaging. And that's the ability to tell a decent story with fun characters where no one takes everything so seriously that all of the fun, charm and straightforward entertainment value is sucked dry. Certainly not perfect but fairly enjoyable, "Serenity" rates as a 6 out of 10.

I find that site rather charming. A mix of what by rights ought to be near Calvinist intolerant overprotectionism, and unexpectedly good taste.

They list all the "bad" things out with a perfectly straight face, yet never topple over into Mary Whitehouse country.

Their review of "Pulp Fiction" is a hoot, and they give it 9 out of 10.

It's obviously a tool to help parents figure out what they should or should not show to their kids. It's an honest and "objective" attempt at listing things that folks *might* object to, and let people decide for themselves whether there is anything at all that might not agree with their value system they'd like to instill into their kids...

It's funny that just by listing out things that different people might object to might actually have the liberally tending "tolerant" folks can get themselves all twisted in a bunch or object to *it*.

I think that could be valuable for folks who take the protective (or over-) interest in what their kids are exposed to. They clearly separate the review of the film from the Parental review which lends some credibility IMO.

But why don't they list some positive Imitative Behaviors? There's plenty of old-fashioned heroism available in the plot. Doin' the right thing and all.

Yeah, there are some movies that have that. You'll likely notice them more in the sections on "Worthy for discussion" , etc... It's meant to point out things that might be good to see and then talk about. Good example might be watching "Traffic" with your teenager and having a discussion on what problems illicit drugs are causing in society from governmental level down to everyday suburbia; how different people react to it: Parents, G-Officials, kids, peers, local drugy, drug lord, drug lord's wife/lover, the police, the crooked police, etc.

Funny, Walmart is in a deal to sell a DVD player that will let you download these templates (off the internet) and actually turn a R-rated movie (e.g. Saving Private Ryan) into a PG movie (mostly editing out violence and language, etc.) Some parents just find it objectionable to have to show their young'ens all of the horrific (nightmare inducing) killings just to point out bits of history and heroism... MPAA and folks like Spileberg naturally objects to it - so watch for lawsuits... The thing is, thhey already do similar kinds of editing for showing on TV, the "normal" pan-and-scan DVD/VHS showings, and airplanes... I don't understand these folks...

Jayne's no idiot (despite how we may mock him).

He couldn't have been planning to protect her himself. What was he gonna do? Maroon her? Even with her martial arts abilities, the Operative would still have been able to find her. Turn her over to the Feds? Maroon her and then tell the Feds where to look (when they come after Serenity)?

As thick skulled as he can be, Jayne had to have known what the outcome would be. The fact that he wouldn't have pulled the trigger himself (probably --he did have his gun out) doesn't absolve him (any more than it absolved the members of Parliament who were responsible for Miranda).

Of course, this all ignores what Mal woulda' done to him when he found out. Mal tried to throw him out an airlock last time. . .
