*** WARNING!! There are MAJOR Serenity spoilers in this post!! ***

Well, the translation game was a runaway success, so I'm taking a chance on another! Welcome to Little Things that could have Changed the 'Verse.

The game is played thus: You take ONE scene from 'Serenity' and then make one tiny little change that would have had a huge impact on the movie. For example...

Mal turns away from The Operative, trapped and helpless against the railing. The Operative continues to gasp, unable to speak, as Mal inserts the disk into the transmitter.

The tearful woman appears on the screens, image after image of corpses appearing in front of her.

Woman: "These are just some of the images-"

FZZT! FZZT! BLINK!

The screen freezes, then dims, then fades into the Microsoft blue screen of death.

Mal: 愚笨的微软胡扯! 我劝告他使用免费软件!

It's that easy! So let your imaginations run riot, and above all - have fun!

SIMONWHO

"I am a leaf in the wind. Oooh, there's a penny on the floor."

That or a cut scene from 12 years previously:

Pointy Haired Alliance Boss: Get the Pax distributed.

Humble Peon: Sir, why don't we test it on one or two people first before exposing it to 30,000,000?

PHAB: All right but it all works in theory, I can't see what could possibly go wrong.

Ooooh, I wanna play!!

The Operative stands full of his own importance, hands clasped behind his back as he stares out into the space before him.

"You should have let me see her. We should have done this as men. Not with fire..."

"Sir!" The Helmsman points into the distance.

***

Mal gapes at Wash.

"What do you mean the Reavers ain't following us?!?!?!"

*~*~*
"Your toes are in the sand."
"And your head's up your..."
"Hey!"

The Operative: I want to resolve this like civilized men. I'm not threatening you. I'm unarmed.

Mal draws gun and shoots the Operative in the head. He falls over, a pool of blood draining from him.

Mal: Good. Let's go.

or

Project Overseer: She's been conditioned for combat. Though we still have to work a few of the kinks out.

or

Kaylee: Captain will be back before you can spit.

Simon: I suppose so. But I'm still going to be worried and need something to keep my mind off of things. Want to have sex?

*Nothing happens*

*The Operative kills Mal*

I think the point is that it took a while for the bad effects to kick in, like she said at first it worked, people stopped fighting. It was after that that they stopped breeding, not something likely to be noticed in a clincal test, and after that everything fell appart.

They probably did smaller clincal tests, but those tests were not long term enough to realize what would go wrong.

The Operative stands full of his own importance, hands clasped behind his back as he stares out into the space before him.

"You should have let me see her. We should have done this as men. Not with fire..."

"Sir!" The Helmsman points into the distance.

"Fire" The operative says without pausing to comment they are not dodging.

Serenity is destroyed. And moments later Reavers appear in the distance.

-

Mal points his gun at River, River points her gun at Mal, River pulls the trigger and
a) Mal doesn’t get a shot off, Simon walks in, ignores the dead Mal, and puts River to sleep.
b) Mal shoots her and they both die. The operative watches on his security feed, he goes on to the next job.

-

Earlier:
I’m sorry, Miss Key-Member-of-Parliament is sick, she’s decided to view the subject via video.

-

Zoe: Air support is on the way sir.

-

Simon: I guess you’re right mom. I was being paranoid, River is just joking.

-

Simon: I messed up a dinner party? I’m sorry dad. That’s too important to risk doing again, River can get herself out.

-

Captain of other ship: “Do what he says”
Raises gun and tries to shoo Mal again. Mal shoots him and is then gunned down by everyone else.
Everyone pauses and looks at the two dead captains. After a pause.
“Plug in the catalyzer.”
“I’m on it.”

-

Nandi is hit by a the laser but it misses all vital organs and, being a bit hot, cauterizes the wound. She lives. Mal finally settles down, the crew along with him. The alliance never finds River.

-

“Oh, the doctor… is there a reward?”
“Yes.”
“You can have the kid.”

Panting and sweaty, Simon and Kaylee embrace. Long ignored passions overflow as they move together to the cold steel floor. In the ductwork above, River appears and smiles at the lovers below. Gracefully, she swings down and lays next to Kaylee, kissing everywhere Simon isn't...

Change the plot? No. Hotter than Hell in Texas? You bet your sweet ass. Show of hands, who wants to see more threesomes on this midbulk transport?

Always a beast, never a burden.

LIMINALOSITY

lol the whole way down! good one guys.

Joss' mom steps on a butterfly.

The independents use a pocket pack stargate to get behind the Alliance ships at the Battle of Serenity Valley, then they use one of Chriton's wormholes to vacuum them elsewhere.

Kaylee doesn't even [ilike/i] strawberries.

River falls out of a tree at age 10, the resulting River is never of any interest to the Alliance, though she still plays a mean game of the Alliance w/dinosaurs vs the Independents.

In the earlier scene where River flips out, what if there were high powered weapons lying about as there often seem to be these sorts of joints?

INEVITABLEBETRAYAL

Inspired by Out of Gas, which I watched tonight:

--------------------------------------------------------------
Bester: You want to do what? Where?? Girl, you are off your nut. Let's just go to my bunk....

--------------------------------------------------------------

Marco: Naw, we ain't takin' Jayne on this job; got better trackers than him anyhow. 'Sides...I always get the feeling he's looking for the next best thing.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wash plays with buttons and switches. Off screen we hear Mal and Zoe

MAL (OS): He's great, ain't he?

WASH: *twiddles switches*

ZOE (OS): I don't like him.

WASH: *stops twiddling to eavesdrop*

MAL (OS): What??

ZOE (OS): Something about him bothers me.

WASH: *visibly disturbed*

MAL (OS): What? What about him bothers you?

ZOE (OS): Not sure. Just... something.

MAL (OS): Well, your "somethin'" comes up against a list of recommendations long as my leg. Tanaka raved about the guy. Renshaw's been trying to get him on his crew for a month. And we need us a pilot.

ZOE (OS): I understand, sir. He bothers me.

WASH: *tear*

Wash pulls out futuristic daytimer. Crosses out "Woo first mate of Serenity" and writes in "Call Renshaw"

---------------------------------------------------------------

MAL: Let me ask you this: if you're so "respectable," why are you even here? I mean, I heard tell of fancy ladies such as yourself shipping out with the big luxury liners and the like. But a registered Companion on a boat like this? What are you runnin--

INARA: *interupts* Why, Captain Reynolds! That's something I'd never considered. Truth to tell, the idea of a luxury does make life on this...ship...seem somewhat less than ideal. I thank you for your suggestion. *leaves*

MAL (beat): Shit.
