Hello all! This is my first time on the site... ever. So I guess you could say I'm a newbie, lol. To introduce myself, my name is Morgan. I'm the Editor in Chief of a college newspaper, The Blue Devil's Advocate at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

The Firefly/Serenity phenomenon interests me to no end, I'm actually writing a story on it. However, being the editor of a community college newspaper in Kansas, I can't really interview the stars of the show or Joss himself. So, I thought, why not interview the people who have been behind the show since the beginning?

That being said, I would like to ask you all a few questions. Then, with your permission, I'd like to put your responses into my story. Here goes nothing!

1) Have you been a fan of the show since it's premiere? If so, what did you like about it? If not, how did you find out about it later?

2) What does the term "browncoat" mean? How did it come about?

3) Have you been at all involved with efforts to save the show in the past? If so, what did you do?

4) What do you like most about the show?

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?

7)How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)

8) Can I get your first and last name? (For the quote)

Hiya,

1) Yep. Truthfully, I didn't think the premise was that interesting at first, but when I saw it was by Joss Whedon, I decided to give it a shot. I liked Buffy and Angel so much, I figured Joss wouldn't steer me wrong.

2) The term comes from the brown coats Mal (and many of the other soldiers in the rebel army) wore. Since we fans are "rebels" -- loving a show that was cancelled after only three months -- we adopted the term.

3) Not really, and my activities have been limited to just introducing a few people to the show, so I haven't been the most active person in this regard.

4) Honestly, I just think it's Joss. He writes possibly the best dialogue in all of TV and movies. That and I think the eclectic group of characters -- a ship's crew, a doctor, his crazy sister, a "companion" -- appealed to my sense of whimsy. It looked like some crazy role-playing game that someone thought up at 2 a.m. (and I've been in games like that)

5) Yes. And I guess "very happy" would be an accurate description. I've watched all the episodes at least four times, including commentary, and have even watched a couple in foreign languages, just to hear how they voice the various characters and how they speak some of the best lines.

6) Not long after it was announced -- I think it was April or May of last year, and I was thrilled. It was great to see that it was getting the second chance it deserved. I've really never felt this way about a TV show before, but I didn't ever want to stop watching it (and still don't, as you can tell by my above answer).

7) Just once so far, but I plan to go again...maybe this weekend.

Other questions

I believe the movie was green-lighted after Universal saw how well the DVDs were selling. I know I kept checking them out on Amazon.com, and they were still in the top 100 four months after their release -- not bad for a TV show that was cancelled after less than a dozen episodes.

As for sequels, sadly, I think those are unlikely, given how the movie's performed at the box office. Joss even made a post you can read at http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=13918 that seems to indicate he's happy with what he's accomplished but isn't really holding his breath. Maybe if we're lucky, we'll still get books or even maybe a made-for-TV movie, like the Babylon 5 movies, but we are, unfortunately, looking at the possible end of the series.

1) I've been watching Firefly since its UK premiere on the sci-fi channel in early 03. I was on holiday at the time, taped the first three episodes, and watched with rapt attention when I returned home. I watched most episodes, but passively, didn't really get into it. Then when I went back half a year later and got the DVDs (after meeting Nathan, Jewel and Summer) I realised just what a diamond in the rough Firefly really was.

2) Like WashedOut said - the Browncoats were the Independants. The rebels, the losing side of the war that Mal and Zoe were on. Since we're fans and we fought (with semi-success) the show being cancelled... that's the name we adopted.

3) Mainly I've been trying to promote Firefly (and since Serenity) as best I can - posters, word of mouth, lending the DVDs, advertising online. I figured like many others that sales were going to influence Firefly's future, and not some petition. So far I've converted around 20-people to the Flan fold.

4) Everything. The cast have an amazing dynamic and seem to fit together perfectly. The dialogue is unique and flows, and never ceases to either make me laugh, or bring out some other emotion (Objects in Space makes me wanna cry at River's speech, *every* damn time). And let's not forget the fact that the concept itself is unique - a Western set in space where the characters speak Chinese (Mandarin) at random intervals? Where's that been done before? ... nowhere.

5) I own two sets of the DVDs... a personal copy and a loaner copy that I give to whoever I talk into watching it next. I never seem to actually have the loaner copy in the house (it's out right now), which can only be a good thing! And I actually didn't know the DVDs were out in the UK til I saw them in the shop, grabbed them, and was instantly happy.

6) No idea when I found out. Whenever the earliest rumours were floating around, I was there. I'm fairly sure that I jumped out of my chair and screamed. Couldn't have been more relieved that something so phenomenal was back.

7) How many times... Four advanced screenings and the London premiere, plus around 15 times in the cinema - so around 20 times. I lost count after the 7th viewing. Now I tend to sit there mouthing the words as I go along.

>> Yes, I saw the premier. I loved it from the start. It was science fiction about real people, in a thoroughly believeable possible-future. It sucked me in immediately. (I was not a fan of Joss' other work, so that's not what attracted me.)

2) What does the term "browncoat" mean? How did it come about?

>> The main character, Malcolm Reynolds, was a soldier on the losing side of a war -- the Independents (aka Browncoats). The fans adopted that term.

3) Have you been at all involved with efforts to save the show in the past? If so, what did you do?

>> Nothing except tell my friends and family, and give away a few DVD sets as gifts. I've brought a fair number of new fans to the show, but I'm sure there are others who have done much more.

4) What do you like most about the show?

>> Sharp writing, characters you fall in love with, mysteries in the characters' pasts, themes that run across several episodes or return in later episodes (that was only clear after the release of the DVDs, since Fox aired the episodes out of sequence), humor, stunning surprises, and a spaceship that only a grease monkey (or a million fans) could love.

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?

>> Oh yes. My reaction was something like, "Three unaired episodes? Yesss!"

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?

>> There were rumors starting almost as soon as the show went off the air. I think by the time it was officially greenlighted I'd found this board and was following the news pretty closely.

7)How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)

>> Just got back from #7. Just gets better and better.

8) Can I get your first and last name? (For the quote)

>> Don Boettger. And for what it's worth, I'm no Gen X fanboy -- I watched the ORIGINAL Star Trek when it was first run.

At what point did a movie come into play? Did Joss have to fight for it? Where can I get more info?

>> Oh yes. Joss told the cast the day the show was cancelled that he would fight to bring it back in some form. They didn't believe him... at first. This is described in many interviews and articles. A good source is the book "Serenity: The Official Visual Companion".

Is there any future plans for anything? A sequel? Another series?

>> That will depend on how well "Serenity" does at the box office (and perhaps in DVD sales). Unfortunately at this moment things are looking a little shaky, but Joss and the actors have been talking about two movie sequels. A return of the show to TV is much less likely.

Glad to help!

1) Yes. I thought it had the "Whedon Stamp" all over it right from the start: strong writing, wit, charismatic actors playing interesting characters. Despite the "otherworldly" setting, the people seemed real.

2) During the war which serves as the series' backstory, Mal and the other Independent troops were called Browncoats due to the color of their uniforms, similar to the Redcoats of the American Revolutionary War. Fans came to be known by that name because we too were on the losing end of the "war" with the Fox network.

3) It was gone so quickly, I don't think I did.

4) The show's creators seemed to hold themselves to higher-than-normal-for-TV standards in every aspect of production. Plot structure, music, set design, costuming, casting, you name it. At no time did "Firefly" pander to the lowest common denominator. That was probably what doomed it.

5) Yes. A Godsend.

6) Fall of 2003, I think. Another Godsend.

7) One sneak preview. Twice in official release. Would have been more, but I had a death in my family recently, and there hasn't been as much free time.

I'm a latecomer to the series. I had heard of it when it was on, but I worked Friday nights and never got a chance to see it before it was cancelled. Thanks to the Sci Fi Channel, I found it later through reruns.

2) What does the term "browncoat" mean? How did it come about?

Others have answered this better than I can. :)

3) Have you been at all involved with efforts to save the show in the past? If so, what did you do?

Not as part of any concerted efforts. I've done my part by purchasing merchandise and seeing the movie repeatedly.

4) What do you like most about the show?

The combination of excellent writing and great acting that forms a really cohesive interaction between the cast. To me, the writing makes the characters believably human and the acting brings them to life. It's a combination and one wouldn't work without the other.

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?

I do, and I was ecstatic that they'd put out a DVD set of such a short-lived show.

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?

I only found out a few months before the movie was released, but it made me extremely happy and I was chomping at the bit waiting for the release date.

7)How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)

I've only seen it twice so far, however, I'd like to see it on the big screen at least once more. I would have liked to have seen it a few more times, but life gets in the way sometimes.

Don't sell yourself short on who you can get to interview. You never know until you try.

I used to run a little hobby website on film music. Then some folks encouraged me to turn it into a web publication and interview film music composers. I ended up interviewing several Oscar winners that I thought would never say yes to my little website.

Find out who their agents are and fax them a letter requesting an interview. In your letter, tell them why you want to interview them (how will it figure in your article), how many people read your paper, and throw in some elegant flattery (you don't want to sound like a stalker fan, though). Call them to make sure they got the fax and make contact with the secretaries. Sure, they might ignore your request, or say no. But they just might say yes! You never know.

Email Haken, the webmaster of fireflyfans.net. Ask him if he would be willing to publish your article at this website after you're done. If he says yes, you can always add the visitors' statistics of this site (which are impressive) to your letter. Remember, actors/directors want positive publicity. If you can offer both, you got a chance.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Hello & welcome to the site Morgan!

1)Been a fan since the premiere. I loved the western edge to the show, and the undelying message of independence strikes a cord deep inside me.

2) The others touched on how the term "browncoat" came about, but I think when Nathan Fillion, who plays Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the show, called us "browncoats" over at the old Fox Prospero forums to address us collectively we adopted the name.

3) I was very much involved in efforts to save the show. I helped w/ the many post card writing campaigns to Fox & other networks the show was shopped to. I signed more petitions than I can count, and I like everyone else recruited as many new fans as I could.

4)Again I have to say the theme of independence from a meddlesome central government, but I would further add the "family" feel that the crew have in the show. That sense of family is something that appeals to me as well.

5)Yes, I own two copies of the DVD & have given dozens as gifts. I felt elated & to coin Adam Baldwin (who plays Jayne in the show) I felt a sense of "Redemption".

6)I knew as soon as rumors started circulating that Joss was shopping a movie idea. Again I felt a feeling of redemption & a sense of hope for a future in some form for the show.

7)I have seen Serenity seven times now including a prescreening. I am going to go see it again this weekend.

8)My name is Carl Boothe. No problem asking. It's in my profile for all to see.

I believe Joss started the movie idea & pitching it when it became obvious no network was going to pick up the show. So I would say sometime in the spring of '03. Can't speak for Joss, but I would say that is about right.

The cast has been signed w/ Universal to make three films if the first is what they consider "successful". If Universal makes a good profit than we may see two more movies. There is also talk of novels based on the movie.

Absolutely. I loved the anachronism of it. Space ships and cowboys – two great things that go great together!

Wrote every body who I thought might listen.

The characters. You felt want the characters felt. When something was happening (action) you didn’t react to it for the sheer cool factor. You reacted because it was happening to someone you had made a mental connection with.

1) I saw the second episode ('Bushwacked') when it was premiered in '02; I was a fan almost immediatly.
2) "Browncoats" were those soldiers who opposed Alliance domination, whom Mal fought with. I remember back when there was discussion online as to what we, as fans, should be known as - that was the obvious choice...
3) I wrote letters to Fox when it was in limbo, late in 2002; I also donated money to the fan-funded ad in ‘Variety’ during the same time period.
4) Most? Hm...the characters, I guess; they're so believable, so three-dimensional, so likeable, and relatable. And of course, played by the perfect actors.
5) I have two copies; there was a long time period where it was unsure whether we'd get a DVD - I was incredibly excited when its release was confirmed. The weekend I got it, I had some friends over, and we watched all 13 episodes.
6)Aw, I'll never forget that night - I was just browsing the 'net at, like, two in the morning; it had been a long time since there'd been any substantial news on the Firefly front. There was talk of a movie, but just talk. When I discovered it had been green-lit - I woke my family to tell them the news. It was awesome.
7) Five, so far; it'll be at least six before it finishes its theatrical run. My previous record was three, with the second Matrix movie (which, incidentally, sucked).

I was a fan of Buffy and Angel, so watching Firefly was a natural progression. From the first episode, I was completely hooked. The characters were funny and real, and the setting was the best mix of western and scifi I'd ever seen.

2) What does the term "browncoat" mean? How did it come about?

"Browncoat" was slang for the soldiers fighting on one side of a galactic civil war - like Redcoats, or the Blue and the Grey of the civil war. The term carries over to fans of the show, as we identify with the characters of the show, many of whom were broancoats in the war, or share that broancoat philosophy of freedom and independence.

3) Have you been at all involved with efforts to save the show in the past? If so, what did you do?

I spent the time between the Fall of Firefly and Rise of Serenity getting as many people as I could to buy the DVDs and discover why it was so wonderful. On a side note, EVERY single person I convinced to watch it became a die-heard fan. Over 32 individuals - and 100% satisfaction. Well, except for the "where's the rest of it?" part.

4) What do you like most about the show?

No question - the characters. Joss creates people you love, people you hate, people you can't live without. Then he frosts the cake with amazing writing and storylines. Add Zoic's amazing, beautiful effects, and you're right with the rest of us, wondering how a show like that could fail.

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?

I got the DVD for christmas from my husband. I was SO excited to see the episodes that had never been shown, but I started from the beginning, and watched the DVDs over three days. Oddly enough, even though I've received several Buffy DVDs, Firefly is the only one I watched over and over and over.

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?

I was pretty much keeping an eye on what was going on with the show, and I heard about it pretty early. I was VERY excited. Mostly because I wanted more, and I was going to get more, even if only another two hours. I've had a lot of favorite shows get axed by FOX, and this was the first time I was actually going to get to see more, after so many times of losing it all, it was pretty amazing.

7)How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)

Only once. I wanted to go back the next day, and I STILL want to see it again, but I haven't had the money :(

1) Not really since the premiere ie., Firefly but since I watched the DVDs. My Buffy fanatic friend (whom I pooh poohed in the past) was all keen to watch the show because it was a Joss Whedon product. She didn't have cable at the time and it was VERY hard to find it on FOX. I caught parts of two episodes on TV and went "whatever". S'okay but didn't seem worth the effort to set the VCR. Then my other friend -- IT geek with whom I trade scifi novels -- bought the DVDs and shoved them under my nose. I borrowed them and watched and have been hooked ever since.

2) As far as I know, Browncoat refers to the "color" associated with the independents, purple bellies are the Alliance. It's the Civil War reference that Joss uses as he says he was reading The Killer Angels when the idea for the show came to him.

3) I spread the word. Been lending my DVDs to everyone I know who wasn't a convert -- at times I felt like a Firefly pusher.

4) The characters and the writing. Joss has given us a 'verse that feels real. When you turn off the TV, these people are still living in the black and doing their thing.

5) Yes, after I borrowed my friend's set I bought my own and then bought another set for another friend of mine.

6) I don't remember how I heard about it, may have been on Yahoo News. But it was a shiny moment.

7) Only twice so far but managed to get 3 other people who NEVER would have gone into the theatre.

The whole how did the movie come into play, you can read about it in the Visual Companion to Serenity -- book. Joss says that Universal was already interested even before the DVD hotcake selling thing. The DVD sales only made Universal feel better about the deal.

The BDS is something we ALL want to know. Currently FOX still holds the TV rights for any new series and Universal is waiting for the box office #. Since the BO isn't all that shiny, the going thought is that the DVD sales for the movie may make the difference. All the actors have signed on for two more movies so anything is possible.

I think another thing you may want to mention is the diversity of the firefly/serenity audience. Just looking around the theatre, there were a range of ages and about the same # of malesfemales. I don't think this is the typical action scifi flick audience. I saw little old ladies, and giggly girls, as well as the IT geek type. It's as Joss says, he thinks of his products as multi-genre.

A) I didn't get to watch the show when it first came on to Fox, but I had heard about the show from my dad. When he said that it was by Joss, I wanted to watch it because i was a huge Buffy and Angel fan. I was really interested, but I didn't have the time to actually watch it. When the DVDs came out, my dad bought them because he absolutly loved the show. It was then that I finally got to watch the first episode. I think I realized that I was obssessed with Firefly after the episode "Out of Gas." I had watched less than 14 episodes of Firefly and it was already my favorite show ever. I was in love with the characters, in love with the ship, and in love with the show.

2) What does the term "browncoat" mean? How did it come about?
A) Other people have answered this, so I'll let it be.

3) Have you been at all involved with efforts to save the show in the past? If so, what did you do?
A) I wasn't involved in efforts to save the show, but I did promote Serenity when I found out that it was being made. I hung up posters and nagged everyone i knew until they went to go see it.

4) What do you like most about the show?
A) That's hard. I LOVE everything. The characters are amazing. They have so many levels. The plot in each episode has always been interesting and thought provoking (something i love about Joss is that you can always read between the lines and find something you didn't see before). The music was really cool. Greg Edmonson mixed music from different cultures and it had some cool effects. And finally, the show is pure Joss and Joss is an absolute genius.

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?
A) Of course I own the DVD of Firefly. I didn't really feel anything when the DVD came out because I hadn't been able to watch the show before that. My dad was ecstatic, however.

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?
A) I found out about the movie, again, from my dad. At that point in time I hadn't watched the series yet, so I wasn't excited about the movie. I said I might go with him and my brother, but I wasn't sure. Flash forward 14 episodes and I was counting down the days until Serenity and wondering if I could go in costume as my favorite character, Kaylee.

7) How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)
I have seen it four times so far - twice on opening weekend, once the next weekend, and once on the weekend after that. My ride flaked on me two other times or else I would have seen it even more. I'm planning on seeing it at least once every weekend that it is out in theatres.

A) Well, I know that Joss promised the cast and crew after they were canceled that he would find a home for Firefly or some form of it. From there he went to different networks trying to get them to take Firefly and make it shine. This didn't work for the revival of the series, unfortunately. Thankfully and amazingly, we did get a movie.

Is there any future plans for anything? A sequel? Another series?
WashedOut's answer is one of two opinions. And it contradicts with mine. I am sure we will get a sequel. In fact, it will actually be a trilogy. Universal had all of the cast members sign on for a trilogy. The deal was that if Serenity made $80 million worldwide, Joss could make two more movies. This $80 million includes Box Office numbers, but also (i think) DVD numbers. The number of DVDs sold (which I'm sure will be huge) will have an impact on this number, too. I personally know people who just don't go to the movies anymore. They get any movies that they were interested in on DVD when they come out. The Box Office numbers aren't great, but many people have been forgeting the countries where Serenity hasn't opened yet and the wonderful Browncoats there.

CYBERSNARK

(1) I've been watching since the first Fox promos. I used to turn up my nose at Buffy, then I ended up getting hooked on that, then Angel, and when I saw Joss' name attached to this new show, I jumped in right off the bat, and immediately started wondering what I'd missed.

(2) As others have said, Brown is the colour of the Independents.

(3) Sadly, I couldn't provide much more than moral support. Up 'til last year I was still a student, and had no money.

(4) The writing, how the show and characters are layered with subtlety and realistic detail, instead of being just your standard TV-friendly stereotypes. The characters just seemed real.

Also, Kaylee. She's pretty.

(5) No. Again, I have no money, and DVD boxed-sets in Canada cost an arm and a leg.

I'll definitely be buying the movie when it comes out. I know what I'm buying all my friends for Christmas.

(6) I found out the day it was announced on this site (in fact, I used to have the page bookmarked before I cleaned out my favourites). I posted links to the announcement in every forum and to every Email address in my address book. So, yeah, I was excited.

(7) I only made it three times before it got pulled. First Saturday, then on Wednesday (with a guest), then on the second Sunday.

(8) Mark Brown (one of about a million, I think).

Thank you all so much! Your answers have really helped to give the story an identity. It's hard to go in-depth into another world and not hear from the people that live there, you know?
