This is probably nothing, but a random search turned up this recent information....

"Universal seems to already be talking about a hoped-for Serenity sequel, based in info from an interview by Jeremy Neish of FireflyMovie.com"

It's funny, because I had heard the same rumor from a friend of mine, but I'm not sure where he got the information. I didn't want to post it because I can't find anything to corroborate this on the internet. Anyone have info?

The podcast is delivering a very hopeful message! Now, none of this is official (it came from an apparent conversation between Jeremy Niesh of Fireflymovie.com and a producer at Universal), but what they're saying is that Universal may have been eyeing a Serenity sequel from the very beginning, and that there was no REAL monetary goal for the first movie that would make or break the possibility of a second one. I don't know if this is true. Even the hosts emphasize that it is still extremely important to go out and buy the DVD's and support the show and the movie, JUST IN CASE it turns out to be nothing more than a rumor. I just hope that this news is legitimate, and serious talk of a sequel is in the works. Though, wouldn't Joss have mentioned something by now? I'm too excited about the possibilities!

No matter what, Universal has to concern itself with distribution and marketing. They're going to want to see just how much this movie is grossing in the long run. That means we may have a long wait ahead of us. Sometimes, movies have to come to video to finally gain its full audience. Then sequels start becoming more appealing to studios.

They must have a scene where Mal negotiates a salary with River in the sequel. That scene has to be in the sequel. Mal's a good negotiator and he has experience but River's a super genius and she's psychic. That scene would just be freaking hilarious. My money is on River.

I'll take that money. River may be psychic, but she's not a superhero. It's not like she can make Mal think a thing he wouldn't otherwise. And Mal is famously stubborn. In all likelihood, the negotiating would begin, but River would jump to the end, to Mal's final offer.

Not to mention, it's Mal's choice to hire her at all. If he wanted, he could degrade her back to passenger and hire another pilot for cheaper money. Simon's been paying for her so far, if she gets uppity, he'll just have to keep doing that. *g*

MISBEHAVEN

I heard somewhere ( I think it was the podcast, The Signal) that Universal optioned for a trilogy when they bought the rights, and that Joss structured the movie in a such a way as to accomodate a continual storyline for the sequels. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but if a sequel (DVD) for Starship Troopers and other less successful Sci-Fi films can be made, then there will surely be more Serenity in the future.

River would confound Mal with her superior reasoning and linguistic skills but that doesn't mean she'll want a high salary, it’s not like she needs the money. Although there’s always the chance that River will develop a crush on Mal, if she isn't already infatuated with him, and decide to pilot the ship for free.

I think we'll have to wait for the DVD sales figures, though I think that it'll make a good profit. It'd make sense for universal to make a sequel if DVD sales are high, as long as it stuck to the same budget as Serenity.

The cast signed up for a trilogy and Whedon himself has said that he has what happens in the sequels planned, but only in his head. :)

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Let's play it safe and call this all rumor & speculation at this point. Without something official from Joss or 'Versal I would not want to get my hopes up.

Don't get me wrong, I would be willing to bet there is not a browncoat out there that wants a Big Damn Sequel as much as I do, but no sense in getting ahead of ourselves.

'Versal is obviously going to want to see what the final figures for Serenity look like, both in box office sales & DVD sales. If they like what they see than we can start dancing.

If we want to help insure a sequel, we all need to keep pushing the series DVD set, get people watching it on Sci Fi, and buy the DVD set on 12/20. I am thinking Serenity on DVD is going to make an excellent Christmas gift for a ton of people on my list. We can use it to convert people too.

Get ready for round two browncoats, 'cause this fight ain't over yet.

Also, I agree with pushing DVD sales, but not with the hopes that it will prompt another movie. Push the DVD sales because it is a good movie.

So, the moral of the story? By Serenity when it comes out on DVD. Then buy a copy for everyone in your family. Then, buy a copy for all your friends, then by a copy for all their friends. Now, repeat the process with the soundtrack....

...Then we will have our sequel, and yes, yes, it will be shiny.

SO TRUE! I've heard way too much pessimism about how buying the DVDs won't save this thing anymore, blah, blah, blah. It is way too soon to give up. Obviously, not everyone can afford to buy multiple copies, but everyone who can, and really wants this thing off the ground again, should. Buy 'em, lend 'em, tell everyone we know to at least rent the dang thing. It's a great movie and it WILL sell itself when seen, but the problem is, I'm still running into people who have never heard of it! We can do this - but DVD sales are going to be the key.

No offense but just because you didn't enjoy something doesn't make it crap. If you actually thought Serenity was crap then I can't imagine you watch more than a couple of movies a year. And if you care enough to see a movie you should pay for the privilege - FACT.

Since the BDM didn't make the $80 mil and a sequel is green-lighted, would 'versal reduce the budget for Serenity II and thus in essence reducing the quality of film.
I hope that if they do make a sequel they won't sacrifice its budget purely on box office performance.

Remember our beloved TV show was made for a tiny fraction of the budget of the movie and that looked neato regardless. The best moments in Serenity weren't the big space battles or the hefty CGI - it was the character stuff.

And speaking of CGI, I have to say that the Reaver ship from the chase sequence only looked any good when it was the 'phut phut' real life vehicle, rather than the CGI version.

But then again, I thought most of the CGI in Revenge of the Sith looked crappy...

That's very true, despite the huge amount of money spent on ROTS Lucas couldn't even make it GOOD!
If there is one thing Joss can do is make a film far superior to ROTS and with a lower budget.
