It seems that the costume designer owns THE browncoat from Firefly, and she's auctioning it off. Over on the Universal board, we've got a very serious discussion going on about pooling our resources to buy it for Nathan as a birthday present.

Now I know every browncoat out there wants this for his/her self (I know I sure do! No money though:). But there's one guy it belongs with and who completely deserves to have it. Let's get our Cap'n his browncoat!

Details are still being worked out right now; I suggest paying the thread a visit so we don't ask the same questions in too many different places.

Would love to buy the Browncoat and give it to Nathan personally. Alas, not a chance in the 'verse of that happening.

Ahhh, pessimism. How refreshing. What a change of pace on this board.

none of my business or anything, but are you sure that Nathan would want it? don't get me wrong, I'm sure he'd appreciate the gesture. not to mention that it's obviously his size. but would he like to keep it? it he really gonna wear it around the house? I don't remember him ever metioning how great his brown coat was.

again, none of my business. but just think about it. it's a hell of a lot of money too.

At the Serenity convention this week one of the questions at the Q&A was would the cast dress up and come in character. That got a very uncomfortable response. Morena said "I'd have to say 'no'". Nathan said something like "Come on, we come here as us, just so you can meet the actors, learn about the show" (or something to that effect). Basically they thought it was an odd request. So he might think it's a bit weird getting the coat. Now a giant birthday card signed by everyone of us would probably get a far better response. Or we could all save up and commision season 2 :-D

Also if he REALLY wanted it then I'm sure he could have had it when the series ended, I mean the show was cancelled mid season so they knew that they would probably never have need of it again.

I have a couple of ex film costumes and know people that have others. With a few exceptions there is no work done to them that doesnt appear onscreen. I have a uniform jacket worn by the principle actress in a Hollywood war movie and it has no lining because the only scene where she wears it is supposedly winter so she has it closed. The summer uniform jacket for the same actress in the same movie HAS a lining because at one point she has to take it off.

Up close and personal props and costumes are often disappointing because onscreen you never get a closeup view and if you do it's only for a second.

If he really wanted it, wouldnt he have kept it? Not that this isnt a good or bad idea, but that thought occurred to me.

Edit: Oh wait, fletch just said that..

As nice a gesture as it is, I'm more on board with M4TT's card idea... or something to the effect. If he wanted the coat he coulda kept it. Considering it's the gesture that really counts, some kind of massive card from the Browncoats would be a whole lot easier to pull off, and just as well if not better accepted.

I'm not sure he would have been given the option to keep it...isn't a pretty tight rein kept on that sort of thing?

Yeah usually even main actors aren't allowed to take stuff off the set, even from cancelled shows. I think it was Elizabeth Harnois who said that she got a call after Point Pleasant ending saying 'we know you've got the shoes can you please give them back'.
However I don't know how Shawna Trpcic got to keep the coat in that case, maybe it was less strict on Firefly.

It might help to know that on the auction website it says:

"Note: Nathan's birthday is coming up in March, and you know this fits him. I'm just sayin'."

So Shauna trpcic obviously thinks it's a good idea.

Well you can't just walk off with things that's true but I would be very surprised if they would have said no had he asked. A lot of day to day clothes are rented from costume houses and will need to be returned, that could explain the call for the shoes.

Signiture outfits, recognisable costumes etc usually belong to the wardrobe department of the production company -- because if it's destinctive they will have had to have had 2 or 3 made (plus some for stunts.) That's probably how this girl got the coat but the fact remains that if they gave it to her, they could have given it to Nathan had he wanted it.

Mind you, there's a big difference between buying the 'coat for him to wear it and buying it for him to keep it.

and don't I recall something about Alan taking the big red button as a souvenir when the show was cancelled and havin to bring it back for the movie... (am I remembering that accurately?)

So I would imagine that the show has sentimental value to the actors, at some level, even if they would NOT stroll around in the clothing.. which I imagine they would not..

so THE actual browncoat from the show might be of sentimental value to Nathan especially if it came from the fans.. I doubt he would EVER wear it.. but having it might be memorable..

the other dilemma to me is.. for those of more limited funds.. would the money be better spent on this or toward another movie/season.. I do not have the answer. just the question.

I think getting the coat would from the fans would be very touching to NF. I think Universal will make Serenity 2 without our money..though I would definitely put money up for it in a heartbeat.

My two cents.. keep the change.

Point #1 Nathan now has a lot of money and I for one have almost none. If it's being sold at auction and if he wants it he can buy it himself. On one hand yes the coat is unique, on the other it's only money and I need to pay my rent.

#2 If I were him I would appreciate it a lot more if some one were to make me a coat by hand themslves for me than if somebody were to spend a lot of money on me. It would really freak me out how some stranger I never met got my measurements though.

#3 For those of you who say if he had wanted it he could have taken it with him, I beg to differ. Props are called props because they are the "Property of the production", wardrobe falls under that same clause. If 'Versal or Fox paid for it then it is theirs. In this case it belongs to the costume designer. It doesn't belong to Nathan just because it fits him. Can you say "theft" boys and girls? I knew you could.

Wasn't suggesting he would steal it. I'm suggesting that if he made clear he'd like it they would doubtless give it to him at the wrap party. One actor I knew of was given his character's watch when production ended because the producers knew he liked it. I know of at least two others who got to keep suits made for them because they asked if they could keep them. No they don't get to walk off with stuff and I suppose it's just possible that for some reason he may have wanted it and the producers couldn't or wouldn't give it to him. Still I'd be very surprised if a prop coat, probably around $300 of materials and not really usefull outside the show, would have been something they would have said no to had he asked.

The producers of Knight Rider gave Hasselhoff a "KITT" for God sake....

Actually, Alan took the button and SENT it to Joss as a gesture, saying "For when your miracle gets here." or somesuch.

But it's also true that they let Alan keep his Red Flightsuit. I have a feeling they'd let Nathan hold on to the jacket if he wanted to. And while I'm SURE Nathan would LOVE this as a gift, we run the risk of NOT getting it, and I don't like the idea of a LOT of money going to a replica or being in someone elses hands. Don't mean to be a pessimistic killjoy, but that's how I feel.
