New floor!! Yay!!! As promised, it is Friday, thus a day for a new floor!!

Catch up on this thread here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15184&m=212225#212225

This is the 4th floor, where we will ask Haidon how exactly we can post the Juggling Gosling emoticon (submit it to Haken too so everyone can enjoy it, share and enjoy!!).

I will rehash ScorpionRegent's Question to start us off on our HAPPIER floor:

Quote:

New topic: places, If you could travel anywhere where would you go? Why? Have you been there before? If so, what happened? If not, why would you go there? Do you know people there/ Tell us about them if you dare. This is a sci fi chat room, these places, need not be real.

My Real Place? In Aswan on the Nile River in Egypt. At the Cataract Hotel sipping tea, puffing on a hookah and eating little sandwiches while overlooking the botanical gardens, the felucas sailing past (Egyptian sail boats), seeing the granite islands covered in birds and seeing the sun hide behind the mausoleum of Muhammed Ali (different one). I've been there before and at sunset, I do not think there is a more beautiful place on earth. I don't necessarily need to be there with anyone, but I wish I could take my mother, she would love it (but has anxiety/panic issues so she can't).

My Sci-Fi place? Let me think on that a while...

Welcome to the new floor!

Good morning all! Come with me on my vacation -

--- everything blurs into ---

a chartered sailboat on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. a friendly crew to drive the boat and let you help if you're so inclined. 6-8 guests sleep on the deck under the stars, wake up in the morning and roll into the blue water. Visit beaches and ruins and little towns, and party with Aussies on neighboring boats as you meander along the coast ...

--- blurs back to your local reality ---

I had a friend who did this. It will be me someday. Oh yes it will.

I've done that.

They're known as Gullets. And yes I recommend you do it someday. They're amazing! The food is always fresh too usually caught that day from the sea!

One night we had Crabs, Lobsters and Snapper cooked for us on deck under the midnight moon. This after a hard day's loafing about secluded beaches, and swimming so much that salt crystals would form all over your body... Man what a holiday.

Okay CallMeSerenity, if you could use the portal to go anywhere or see anything what would it be?? Come on, besides the secret hidey place of nice guys. You could go to France, or Mars or The Klondike or wherever. Sometimes, it's nice to have a Fantasy Friday!

4th floor! That's a great thing to wake up to.

Where would I go for real? Someplace up in coastal New England. Maine, most likely. My dad and I took a trip up there a couple years ago. Best seafood I've ever had, and some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Plus, it's Stephen King country.

My sci-fi place to go? Floston Paradise (that floating cruise-liner from The Fifth Element).

I'm so with you on the Flotson Paradise, I wanna see Pavalaguna.

I love Maine. In the summer. I have loads of family up there. We usually go up there every year. It's my favourite state. (And I've been to all but three.)

In fact, I very nearly hit Stephen King with my car near Bar Harbor. At least, I'm 95% sure it was him. Or someone who looked EXACTLY like him. It FREAKED me out, let me tell you.

Oh, and if you want good Stephen King stories, XanderLHarris had dinner with him at her aunt's house. She's got stories!

How about some place on each continent? I've been to europe, mideast, and most of the US, that leaves south america, asia, australia, or antartica, unless the mideast doesn't count as africa. Its all about the journy not so much the destination.

A couple weeks ago a friend sent me ( http://www.jagszone.com/other/ode_guy.html) after having much the same discussion with a friend of mine. Particularly the definition of too nice.... thats a killer when some one tells you thats the reason they can't date you btw.

i love horseradish but it has to be eaten in really tiny quantities on a fork, same with anything pickled, and choclate spread.

All of these fabulous destinations, i'm afraid i'm going to come off as really mundane now...

the place i love the most is the Pennines, the bar of small mountains that runs down the middle of the uk. y'see, we live on the west side of them and my grandparents on the east, so we've been driving over them eversince i was a kid, hundres of times, in all kind's of weather and every season, and come glorious blazing sunshine making every field look like its made of rippling molten emeralds, thick blanketing snow, or even fog so thick that everything close is a muted ethereal shade of blue or lavender and lorries come screaming out of it, lights blazing and so close that you thing they must be after you or something.(er, that that when i was about five)Its just a magical journey.

I think the reason i want to go there again is that i always travel that route with my family, and for once i'd like to travel it with someone who appreciates it the way i do.

Otherwise, Venice, carnivale! i've a not so secret ambition to run away to there and apprentic myself to the maskmaker and costumers there.

Trying to learn italian first though.

Italy, good call! I had a conference in Florence once, and it was the BEST week! I really need more time in Italy - food, wine, scenery, history, shopping (and I'm not a shopper, it's just that good!) ...

NOw that I'm done being a smartass, you just do it like you'd do any other link. find somewheres to host the file (imageshack, etc.) and just paste the URL to it as though you were gonna link it to someone. Voila, it just decides to show up as an image.

CYBERSNARK

Real world:
San Francisco, 'cause my two great loves are seafood and Star Trek. If you don't get the significance of how these three things intersect, I'm not gonna help you. Plus, San Fran has the added benefit of not being overly hot, and I have trouble taking heat (no tropical vacations for me, I'd die).

Tokyo, 'cause I'm an animé freak. This wouldn't just be a vacation, but a working trip --I wanna write for an animé series. Won't happen though until I learn some Japanese (and have at least one finished show under my belt), 'cause I don't want to come across as some wierd gaijin otaku.

Unreal world:
Deep Space Nine. No question, no hesitation. Everyone (in the shows and books, anyway) talks about how uncomfortable, dark, and ominous that station is, but I fell in love in the first episode. It's like space-gothic, all dark and melancholy and full of spines and not-quite-right angles and almost-alive curves. I've gone there so many times in my head I almost feel like I know my way around. Plus I like the Bajorans. They're good people.

With all apologies to Joss. Much as I love the Firefly 'verse, I don't think I'd wanna live there.

Late start today, good to see things active. Interesting topic.
Places I think I'd like to visit: UK (spent a couple hours in an airport there, doesn't count) All the folk from there I've met on-line seem great, and all the best music comes from there. Myan Ruins (always interested) Japan (cause, wow)
Places I'd like to return to: Holland.
Fictional place I'd like to live: A home near all my friends with portals in the basement to Harlaam, Holland; The Safe House in Milwaukee, and Disney World(it's hard to not have fun there).

Simple. Victoria, B.C. @ Curious Comics. If I could I would live there. I know it sounds kinda silly and not as exotic as Egypt but Victoria is Beautiful and I could stroll down to that great hotdog vendor across the road from the Empress and just watch the people stroll past.

Woohoo! I'm gonna be famous :)

AS for actually answering the pressing question that has been brought forth... (I actually intended to do that on my last post, but absent-mindeness and work-like duties prevented it)

If I were to visit somewhere here in the states, it would have to be L.A. My friends and I joke we live in L.A. (that's Louisville Area for us,) but I'd love to see just how that city runs. Knowing my luck though, I'd probably get myself murdered.

If I were to go somewhere abroad, it would be a toss up. The Netherlands, or Japan. I think Netherlands would win, because I at least know someone there, and between my knowledge of English and French, I might actually be able to communicate. But Japan is just so mysterious, I'd like to just have the chance to stroll through the street markets there.

Somewhere non-existant? Lots of choices here. I'd say travellingback in time and spending a couple of years in knight training in the middle ages would be super, but I'd just take all our modern illnesses back with me and kill every living thing... that would be not so nice.

Serenity, on the other hand... spend a couple months sailing with the crew, helping them be bad guys (shiny!) would be super cool. Maybe Jayne would let me fire off a couple rounds with VEra :)

I have to say though, I like the idea of DS9 now that you guys bring it up. I never did get why so many people were turned off from that show. I think it was the best Trek show ever. I'd still pick our little Firefly over ds9 any day, though.

I hope so. I gave a link to this thread so he/they could see the emoticon and give all credit to you.

Netherlands and Japan are two of my choices as well. I've been to the Netherlands, all you need is English. Everyone there takes 7 years of English in school. They also seem to be happy to get a chance to practice it with us foreign folk and will attempt to teach you some Dutch, as opposed to other places that get offended that you would dare visit without knowing the language.
Having not been to Japan, I can't say how they are there, But from what I've heard, likely similar in manner to Netherlands. One funny thing about the Dutch, from my limited time there, the People tend towards the tall, yet the cars are getting smaller all the time. Limited real estate doesn't provide the chance to expand roads, so the cars stay small. You'll see things smaller than a VW Bug stop and a 7 footer get out. More odd than funny. They, of course, rely primarily on Bike and Rail. Of course Holland also is known for it's lieneancy on certain things. Adult stores are common and have no stigma attached as they tend to here. No blacked out windows, you can walk down the street and look at all the various toys in the window. Also the "coffee houses" allow the purchase and use on site(removing it from the purchase site is still illegal from what I understand) of MJ. On the street where I stayed for about 2 weeks, there was an Adult shop, a coffee house, and a record shop for rave DJs all within two blocks. (Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll) I found the image amusing. I, of course, only visited the record shop. But they didn't have any Marillion *sniff*.

Haidon... if your flight lands you in LA, go have a look around. BUT, grab the first available bus out of there and take a crosscountry tour. Throw on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, drop off the standard route, just drop out altogether, and go see the real deal. LA is the over-marketed gate of Disneyland. The real Utopia is off the map. I've been to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev and enjoyed being able to sit in a restaurant, drink and eat with friends and new acquaintances and not have the waitress be in a hurry to get us out of the restaurant. That's one of the differences about that part of the world. Going out to eat is still an event that everyone takes their time doing, so you can sit back, chew your food slowly and enjoy the company of you compatriots without the waitress putting the check down on the table before you're done eating or immediately after you put the last bite in your mouth.

I also like the souvenirs from there.

As for where I would like to go, I would like to see those countries that I fly over to get to Russia and Ukraine.

This floor promised shoes, and so far nothing!

well, here they are, I'd like to announce the arrival of my brand new pretty's - they're antique gold coloured with pointed toes and the cutest little kitten heels, low sided so you get the tiniest bit of arch showing and just loose enough that they occaisionally slip off and dangle louche-ly from the toes.

its just foot bliss, they are getting worn for every party this season, especially as they are the exact right shade to complement my kimono jacket and my green dress, oh i'm in shoe heaven!

Ahem, ok, i'm done now.

When I said I wanted to visit L.A., I didn't mean to imply that I thought it was some spectacular place that represents the beauty of America, or any such gibberish like that. Honestly, I think that city is probably about the nuttiest place anyone could imagine to live. That's what intrigues me about it. I mean, you gotta wonder what's going on in people's heads that choose to live in a place where gunplay is commonplace on the freeways. (Yeah, I'm sure that's probably overstated/exaggerated.)

Visiting NYC might fit into the same kind of mind set. If I were looking to visit either of those cities, I'd be looking for crazy and haphazard, not spectacular and amazing.

Yea, gunplay on the freeways happens but it's frequency is overstated by the press. Remember safe landing don't make the news.

I spent a month in the Republic of Georgia last summer, holy cow what a beautiful country. They drive like maniacs and whatever you do DON'T eat the cheese but the scenery is gorgeous, the pace is slow, and the people are super friendly. And swear words in Georgian are the best. (I'd share, but they defy typing)

As for souvenirs: the guilded drinking horns, as in actual horns from a big beast of burden, hollowed out and guilded, were my favorite.

You are probably thinking of Hollywood and maybe Venice. The rest of the greater LA Megalopolis is one giant urban sprawl that goes on and on. The freeway gunplay, if it happens it gets frontpage and opens the 5 o'clock news, but it's not that common it's just there are so many people that someone is bound to do something in a given day. You are more likely to get hit by lightening. Some of LA can be nice, but for the most part it's just a big sprawl where hordes of people are struggling to keep up with the outrageous cost of living in a place that is marketed as too desireable for words. There's smog, crime, superficiality, conspicious consumption, retched excess and everything else that you can possibly imagine and plenty more you can't. It's good, it's bad, it's ugly.

Oh yeah, the beach is never as nice as Baywatch.

M4P: OMG I want a guilded drinking horn! That's so cool!!

OMG! I love shoes! I can't remember if it was Seryn or who on this thread that brought up shoes, but hot damn I love shoes. I have tiny tiny feet so I will basically buy any shoe that fits me. Although I have a thing for knee-high black boots. I love tall black boots!! I also love pointy toed shoes but that's cos they make my feet look bigger (I range for 4 1/2-6 depending on manufacturer, so I'm dying for them to look a bit bigger (bell bottoms completely eat up my feet), just for the guys, the average womans foot is a size 7-9). I have this adorable pair of pink ankle boots with pointy toes. Oh how I wish I had more to wear them with. Otherwise 99% of my shoes/boots are black. Cos they go with anything!! I used to have over 200 pairs of shoes, but I threw out and sold off some when I moved up here, and the only plus to living in Wausau is a HUGE Asian population which means stores actually carry tiny tiny shoes cos those little Hmong girls have tiny tiny feet too!!

Okay i will shut up about shoes before people start to wonder if I have some sort of fetish (I don't I just love shoes, I am woman, what do you expect?).

-BEG, who is out of the hidey weekend hidey hole.

Did everyone have a nice weekend?

No fair! I have size 10s and all the shoes that are so cute on the rack are monstrous on me! And pointy shoes are like 2 feet long! (funny you use the phrase though - I've been playing with a fanfic that makes good use of a pointy shoe )

hmm, maybe this shoe discussion will serve as a non-nice boy detector. Or will nice boys flee from it as well?

I won't flee.....

However, I currently own a whopping total of 3 pairs of shoes.

Pair #1: White tennis shoes. For everyday wear. $7.

Pair #2: Hiking boots - for those dressy kinda days. $8.

Pair #3: Leather medieval bootses. For the ren faires. $?? over a C-note, but I got them for my birthday, so I can't be sure.

As for the weekend.... I spent most of it scooping vomit out of the rug. (My nephew had a nasty stomach virus. Poor kid.)

Hmm, gunplay on freeways, I'm kinda glad that I live in Britian now...

As for shoes, I have steel toe cap boots that I don't wear anymore (£~40), Work shoes that have almost fallen apart (£35), and some Converse All Stars that I wear most of the time and actually have fallen apart (£35).

$8? I thought £25 was cheap for shoes, rip-off Britian man
