If I need to warn about spoilers now, you've been living under a rock for the last 3 months...

So on my ninth viewing of the BDM I noticed something interesting. When Mal is giving his "I aim to misbehave speech" after the crew has discovered the origins of the Reavers, Jayne says, "Shepherd Book used to tell me, if you can't do something good, do something right." Then he slides the Blue Sun bottle across to Simon. I started out watching the bottle, but then something caught my eye. On the table in front of Jayne is his gun from the heist at the beginning of the movie. And there resting on the handle of the weapon is a small black book with gold trimmed pages, about 6" x 4" x 1". It appeared remarkably similar to the Bible that Book is repeatedly seen reading from during the series. I know that Book and Jayne grew to be good friends (lifting weights, even!). I wouldn't surprise me at all if Book left his little pocket bible with Jayne as a keepsake, and Lord willing, for Jayne to read. And apparently it brought some comfort to Jayne, because after what had to have been an unpleasant series of events, there he is talking about the Shepherd, and there's the Shepherd's bible. Pretty cool, huh?

There's also talk of Jayne sharing cigars with Book...and then in typical Jayne fashion, after Book dies, he smokes another cigar...or something like that

Good eye. I did notice that Book and Jayne were getting friendly.... I just figured that Book gravitated towards Jayne because he was in the most need of some Churchin' Maybe Book had more of an impact on Jayne than I first thought.

In the visual companion Jayne gives Book some cigars--in the novelization Jayne calls 'em "coo-bans" (I find it no surprise that Book would have refined--and expensive--taste in cigars. And you're right--at the very end of the movie, in the funeral scene, Jayne is chompin' on one of the cigars. They must have been very close indeed. Interesting how two very dissimilar people can bond like that.

Much of the crew was dismissive of Jayne, until they needed his firepower.
Book treated him like a man on equal footing. In that first moment in "Serenity" when Jayne has his gun in Book's face, and Book won't back down and let him shoot Dobson... I think that's where the respect between them began.

In the next instant, Zoe talks down to Jayne, gives him an order, puts him back in his place, but when he was squared off with Book, they were equals, each standing up for what the felt what right.

It's never been a surprise to me that they became friends, even though they were so different.

I didn't notice Book's Bible in the movie, but if that's what it is, it's a very nice touch. But does this mean that Jayne, of all people, will be the voice of faith and reason for the (crosses fingers) next movie? Shudder to think.

Don't forget about Jayne and Book talking about the order Book follows in the "Objects in Space" episode. Jayne seemed concerned over the celibacy part of the deal, but otherwise he 'seemed' pretty open to the whole Shepherd thing.

Not to get all preachy or anything, but the Apostle Paul used to hunt down and terrorize Christians before he got his calling...and this is the same Paul who went on to write a good bulk of the New Testament! So if Jayne were to become a Shepherd in (crosses fingers) the next movie or a continuation of the series, it wouldn't take a huge stretch of the imagination for it to be feasible. Sure, Jayne has his own interpretation of ethics, but I don't think he's gone out of his way to hunt certain groups of people down.

And don't forget that Book had a shady past of his own. Perhaps he was just like Jayne once. I daresay that Book recognizes a little of himself in Jayne, and that's part of what has made them close.

Jayne bows his head when Book says grace in the pilot. It's not impossible he was raised in a religious household. He and Book clearly bond throughout the series.

I've always liked the discussion in The Message--"My kinda life don't last long, preacher, so I expect I'm invested in makin' good sport of it whilst I can. You gonna read over me when I get taken down, Shepherd?"

And he sounds completely serious when he says, "The Lord should oughta look after the dead."
