I am an merchant marine and spend ten months a year away from home, onboard ship. Reading, ocassionally writing, music, computer games and watching movies are the chief forms of entertainment when off duty. DVD Box sets are especially enjoyed. It is now mean feat to watch the entire five or six seasons of the Sopranos in four or five days. When a shipmate suggested I watch FireFly, I had never heard of it before. But having nothing better to do, I gave it a try.
Kiss my ass and call me Sally! That is one damn good show! I was very impressed! I devoured the box set in two nights time. The story, the charactors, the charactor's stories, the ship, the worlds, the timeline, the settings - everything just drew me in and left me hungry for more. Now I understand there is a movie - Serenity, that I will see as soon as I'm back in the States. But besides the box set and the movie, is there anything else? If there was ever a story that would make a good book series, FireFly is it. Ain't there any books out there?
I'm wanting more!

So excited for you! You will find that there are books available, soundtrack cd's (check out Amazon.com for a listing) and comics from DarkHorse. Check out cafepress.com for excellent t-shirts, caps, etc...to geek out on--just type Serenity into their search engine.
I saw the preview for the movie Serenity on the Sci-Fi channel and thought it might be a good one to see--that was the beginning for me. Fantastic movie--so as soon as I get home I immerse myself into the net to sponge any info. I can find about the movie and it's origins--and came across Firefly. Went out the next day to purchase the Firefly DVD set--and am now a giddy fan for life! This fandom is all new to me--lol. I've seen the movie 6 times not enough. Can't wait for you to see it too--Take care!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Welcome to the 'verse, KOC.

Be careful though. There's tons of spoilers for the movie here and at other related sites.

Pick up the 3 dark horse comics, "Serenity" they might be hard to find now as each had 3 covers, featuring a different character. Though I think the Collected "Graphic Novel" should be available soon. These three issues, make up about 1 episode and take place between the end of the series and the beginning of the movie.
There is also the unfilmed script "dead or alive" floating around out there.
The River Sessions, that someone else pointed out, also very good.
So read "dead or alive", read the Serenity comics, Watch the River Sessions, see the movie, and you're all caught up.
There is a novelization of the movie by KRAD, other novels potentially coming up, and more comics are almost a certainty.

oh, and Welcome aboard.

Howdy - so is your ship anything like Serenity? Any crew similarities??

I've heard of speculation of a book or 2 being written but they are more of the fanfic-looking-for-a-publisher variety. There's also fanfic on this board - some of it is pretty darn good imho.
My favorite extra though is an unfilmed original script:

It would have been a great tv episode. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. Naw, my ship isn't as cool as Serenity. We're just your average bunch of Joe Sailors. But the job is cool, get to see alot of great places. Recently I spent two days crawling all over Roman ruins in Tarragona Spain. My company has a civil service contract with the Navy. That means we get to do all the cool stuff the Navy does and get their good benefits; but don't have to be in the military. My ship is one of a large fleet called the Navy Auxiliary Force. We are not combat ships, just supply ships and refuel ships. We get to go wherever the Navy goes. Right now, I am in the Mediterrianean for four months - Italy, Sicily, Greece, Crete, Malta, Spain. Entry level positions require no past experience. We take guys and gals green off the street or just coming out of high school. The company provides all the training new hires need. Maybe I should get a job as a company recruiter. Anyway the website is SEALIFTCOMMAND.COM Don't let the pictures of all the clean-cut, military looking guys fool you. I've got hair down to the middle of my back and a full Viking-stash. They just picked the respectable looking guys for the pictures.

Thanks again, later.

I am new too. I watched the original airings of the series sporadically in the background while online gaming on genuinely enjoyed the World Series that plagued Firefly so much.

Recently, I caught a few episodes on Sci-Fi and my full attention to the shows were richly rewarded with what all of us here appreciate.

I picked the the series DVD collection and fell in love with all of it as my friends and I watched each episode. We watched and rewatched each episode and forced just about any friend we valued to do the same.

The Serenity movie was an extra xmas treat and now I am hopelessly hooked. Bought one friend the RPG for xmas, have a cunning hat on order for my self, scoured the local shops for the comics and action figures yesterday and just finished watching "My Bodyguard" with one of the aforementioned friends.

I guess I will have to pray for now and consider giving angel and buffy a second look.

which is partly what drew me to 'Firefly',
that longing to get on a transport and see the 'verse....

I'm looking forward to the novelizations my own self

(just don't buy thru TFAW, buy through ANYONE ELSE!)

Grayfury posted this for new Browncoats:

KOC- hi! Just curious, do you have internet access aborad ship while on the 'high seas'? Do you still call them that?:]

There are many similarities between Mal & Horatio Hornblower (books by C.S. Forester- the BBC films left out all his internal thinking, which the best stuff). You might enjoy Forester's The Good Shepherd too- WWII convoy attacked by U-boats in a storm.

Ahoy there, matey.

Glad you enjoyed Firefly. You, more than anyone will appreciate the important lessons it offers. Always do the right thing, and given a choice of cargo, take the beagles...

If anyone's after good seafaring stories, James Nelson is your man. He did a good one from the point of view of the Confederate Navy, which will suit the Browncoats, and there was a short series in the piratey vein.

That was really good. The pirates in that were very like Reivers. Really out of it, hacking up their ships to make them more suited to boarding, and "vapouring" - as they luff up athwartships of your fore topgallant yard (look at that: who'd guess I'd never been to sea?), they all hang from the rigging and scream and bang the sides and just acted downright terrifying.

Best of all. Very well written indeed.

And let's not forget the great Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, one of which was made into the equally great film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

And to the OP, welcome to the sometimes bittersweet world of the Browncoats. We know how you feel, and we're right there with you.

Why sure we got internet access on the ship. I'm on the computer in the ship's library right now. We also got a satellite phone. It is New Year's Eve and I'm waiting on the phone to free up so I can call home.
Dewey Lambdin writes a series of novels dealing with the naval career of a British officer in the years during and after the American Revolution. Mostly about the British and the French mixing it up at sea. It is very similiar to the Hornblower novels in regards to the naval accuracy and history. But is written in the every day man's venue. Sort of like Horatio Hornblower meets Van Wilder. It is action-packed with plenty a broadside and sword play. Very funny at times. And pretty damn randy at times - this guy gets laid more than Captain Kirk. It's a good series to read and I highly recommend it.
The ship's phone is free now, so I'd better jump on it before someone else does. Happy New Year!

p.s. It depends on how much rum we have drank if we use the term "High Seas" or not. The more we drink, the saltier we like to think we are.

Sweet Jane,

Yeah, chimps and baboons suck. Bunch of dirty poop-flinging monkeys! I usually go to the zoo looking for a fight. Don't think I won't fling poop back at them!
