So, ladies and gents... Today, the Universal fan site closed, with the website soon to follow.

So, here's the question: where do we go from here?

um... this site

"The people who made the show, and the people who saw the show, which is roughly the same number of people, fell in love with it, a little bit too much to let it go, too much to lay down arms when when the battle looked pretty much lost. In Hollywood, people like that are called unrealistic, quixotic, obsessive... In my world, they're called Browncoats."

Where else Gassi, you keep pressen the fight on. Either other boards already up ie FFF.net + others or you build your own and keep building up the fan base and promoting the series/movie. Either way, Capt hasn't ordered a stand down yet, besides I didn't a get dressed up for nuthen. Thus we hold, and send the message to fox, that its the audience, not the damn suits that decides what is on t.v. If there is no audinence, then no $$$ for Fox or anyone else. Already has a massive fan base and if you keep track on the board we get more in with each passing day. Well theres my 2 cents.
mata, Ookami yori

Suren time to give Fox and them Gorram Alliance boys something to think about.
I ain't disagreen, I only wanted a drink!!!

No, no - I don't mean in a literal 'What websites do we use?' sense.

I mean - what do we do now? Firefly has an incredible resource of people who are fans who could be pooled to do something constructive.

At the moment the 'verse has nothing commercially going on with it (other than the next batch of comics and the books for 2007). So, where do we go from here?

where do we go from here? we pimp out Firefly and Serenity like you would a whore, i'm sorry, companion, before the guilds came along. one thing i've noticed that i'm very happy about is all of the people visiting here lately talking about how they are new fans to the 'verse. there are still tons of people to recruit. the love for Firefly is infectious, it just hasn't been spread to people. you can't fall in love with something you've never seen. and i've never shown Firefly or Serenity to someone who didn't end up liking it or loving it. If we want more, we have to work for it. It sounds dumb to say, because fans of other things don't have to work for more like we do. But if Browncoats want more, we're going to have to do our best to give Firefly and Serenity the attention and appreciation they deserve.

Ohhhhhh, well I hear that there's a project to save the air ambulance from 'Ariel' that's in a junkyard in the desert, and rebuild it. Also the Mule from the movie seems to be tossed in the tall grass on the Universal lot and ignored. I think both of these should be saved, rebuilt and go on Sci-Fi tours to conventions. Of course, I don't have the funds for that.

We can collect funds for a sequel. I'm sure if we got all of us Browncoats together donate what we could then we could collect enough to at least gain Universal's attention.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I think collecting funds for a sequel may be a bit premature. I know now is the time that people are most excited about Serenity and have a huge craving for more, but I don't see that going away for well, ever. I'm constantly seeing ads for crap dvds, I've not seen a single Serenity DVD ad on TV, and it's outselling most everything. I think this may lead to Universal funding the sequel. I've not seen anything from the Universal execs saying they've made any decisions about sequels. Give them time to get figures and look at 'em. Until I see something from them signed in blood saying they've made the official non-reversible decision to never touch Serenity again, I'll assume the ball is still in their court. Til then we spread the word, show people the DVDs. "seeing is believing." Preach it.

Well I like the idea of raising funds for the movie. Would that be the most ground breaking idea ever?

What would film studios think if we raised that much money? Can we do it? I don't know. I wish I knew how many of us there were but we are all spread out on different boards.

Even if we came up with a few million. The episodes were 2 million to make. Could they make a direct to DVD for that?

We beg Joss for more.

We recruit . . . and recruit.

We keep conjurin up those ideas . . . like, a non-profit organization to collect and preserve the original Firefly and Serenity props and sets; like, continuing the program to donate Firefly sets and Serenity to our troops overseas.

We don't give up.

Repeat as needed.

And Gossi, just another thing. Our New York City Browncoats are going strong. We had 21 new members join in the last 7 days. Two people who just got hooked on the show through the movie.

New people are discovering us every day. And I don't know about you, but to me it's the community. The friends I have made through this group have really been remarkable. They've turned me on to so many films, directors, television shows that I would have never have watch had it not been a bunch of Browncoats telling me it's good and that I'll like it.

We are like minded people even though we are so different. Kinda like our favorite crew. We're different, but we play together well.

So let's keep our community alive. Thank for the new website, Gossi. We'll keep flyin.

Fair Question Gossi...

my answer "I don't know"... but it's a good answer for now.

I think we keep recruiting and hold the line.. we stay faithful to each other and the 'verse and other than that.. I do not know.

I am along for the duration. The original browncoats held on from the series cancellation til 2005... what did they do to pass the time? (I was not one..so I am truly interested)...

If you are going to talk about money, don't talk about raising it before you talk about how they are spending it.

I'm sure, with such a fan base (and yes, I'm a newbie fan myself - sold by the movie, and just finished watching the series tonite) the cost of production of the movie vs the series can be reasonably laid out. Then consider the profit margins of both via dvd sales.

Consider, the only field of dvd sales that has seen an increase (and a remarkably sharp increase at that) is television dvd sales. While the dvd market for movies has flattened out and failed to see a growth. (Look it up if you don't believe me :)) And few enough movies are making a profit in the theaters as to be no nevermind. People are willing to spend the 40-50 bucks for 14 to 24 hours plus over the 20 bucks for two hours (and as many hours of often useless extras as can be dreged up).

A quote from CBS news online ( http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/23/opinion/main676006.shtml ) "Today the average movie costs $4.2 million to distribute and nearly $35 million just to advertise." That's not even the cost of making the movie - whereas a tv show is the advertisement of the upcoming dvd release that I am willing to bet, cost less than 35 million to make. But again, I'm sure someone can work up the actual numbers.

And, once you start pounding the execs emails with actual numbers, you'll either see a response, or the reason they are not continueing to produce the work.

WHITEFALL

The most direct thing we can do atm is buy more Serenity DVDs, because that directly ties in to the most likely (comparitively) continuation of the 'verse, a sequel. What to do with more copies? well, give em to a friend, whatever... and as much as i'd prefer to say 'buy tons of firefly DVD sets'... well, that money goes mostly to fox, not as direct as buying the movie. Actually a good strategy might be to lend out your FF DVDs and hopefully your friends who inevitably like it will buy Serenity themselves...

Anyhoo... Joss made it clear that he would be absolutely interested in doing the 'verse again, though right now he is working on Wonder Woman and that other thing, Goners or whatever it was called. So, he's kinda busy, but especially if Wonder Woman does well, hope is not lost. And I mean this in a very literal sense, we are a beautiful bunch of folks (inside if not outside as well :) ) so....

Like meeeee! Been obsessed since the day I saw Our Mrs. Reynolds on SciFi!

Two things I'd like to note:

1. Showing it to your friends and family works best, because you know their tastes better, and they usually trust yours better. Strangers, the reaction varies wildly, from "Huh. Never heard of it... sounds fun, though" to "OH GOD SHUT UP! SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUP ALREADY! I'VE HEARD ENOUGH!" (One of the worst cases: I saw one person on a major Trek BBS say that he wasn't going to see Serenity OR watch the series, because he was sick of the "cult like" Browncoats badgering him on the boards. Though thankfully, most of the people online that I've met that didn't like it, it was simply because the genre melding didn't quite work for them. Which would be why they get annoyed at some of the pushier Browncoats; they've already tried it, and didn't particularly like it. It took me a long time to realize why, really, and even then, I still can't help but love even the flaws in the 'verse. I'm a right softy, I am).

2: There is no number 2. I think I had a number 2, but Reavers ate it.

Ooh! Also: one of the most effective ways of getting people to watch is to, in a discussion that somehow swings that way, spot the one person who says something like "Well, I like SF, and I lOVE westerns. It sounds kind of fun...". Then you tell them "Oh, you should try it then! It's loads of fun, in my opinion. If you get SciFi Channel, they're even airing it right now on Fridays at 7 PM Eastern, so you don't even have to plop down the money for a box set to see it! And right now, I think they're getting into the better episodes, too! Anything past Shindig is total gold, I think. Though Shindig is a pretty cool episode... ahaha, but you good folks can have your topic back about now."

I've gotten more people's interest piqued that way than I ever got being remotely pushy. Just thought I'd share that. Because there's a handful of us out there that have gotten so zealous about promoting it that it's freaked some people out. Acting casual and saying it's a "fun little show that's actually airing on SciFi right now..." is much, much better. You sound saner that way.

ANd keep in mind, if they say they've seen several episodes and still didn't like it, don't push it any further. If it was only one episode, by all means ask them if it was The Train Job or whatever, but if they've seen several, chances are they started getting into some of the better episodes and it just wasn't to their taste.

Hard to believe, I know. But not everyone likes the kind of quirky 'verse Joss created (and I've met at least one person who didn't particularly like Joss' writing style even after giving it several shots *shrug*). And if they don't, then don't push it. All that will do is make them want to complain about Browncoats all being cult-like obsessives that make Jehovah's Witnesses look charming! :(

No, it's not that. It's that somehow, we have a fanbase that WANTS it that badly.

Tru Calling and Wonderfalls are other examples of great little shows (both SF! Noticing a pattern, here...) that Fox axed. Both have a small, but devoted fanbase. However, beyond a few wimpy pleas for people to write to Fox to un-cancel Tru Calling, there was barely a whisper about it. Wonderfalls didn't find genuine fanbase until it hit DVD, since it was worse off than Firefly, having been canceled after only FOUR episodes (out of 13 produced). The DVD sales for Wonderfalls aren't bad, but compared to Firefly it's NOTHING. And I can't even FIND Tru Calling in Best Buy, despite being able to find the older Wonderfalls set.

Firefly just really snagged an unexpectadly large, devoted fanbase that happens to be just devoted enough to spend a lot of money on it. In other words, Firefly was a hell of a lot luckier than most other canceled shows of the past few years! And it continue to be. After all, it's airing multiple times on SciFi Channel, and won huge, huge ratings. And from what I've heard, Serenity's doing very well in the UK.

Why yes, I am an optimist, why do you ask?

Definitely agreed.
