I've seen different approaches to this, so I'd like to dedicate a thread to the ship we all love. :)

When you watch the show, how do you see Serenity? As an actual silent character? A mere mechanic set? The embodiment of an abstract concept?

Is her physical integrity essential or is Serenity defined by the people on her and their relationship?

What about the crew, how do they relate to the ship?

Does Mal love her like a women/person? Is she a metal extension of his own character? A barrier between himself and the world?

My own perception centers around the idea that Serenity = Mal. His relationship to her crew is exactly mirrored by their relationship to the ship, and like Inara says in HoG, his "love for them is what kept them together". The moment Mal is able to accept that, he'll have healed up the bulk of his scars and could theoretically leave Serenity behind without metaphorically killing himself. *g*
To me, Serenity and the lives going on within her are a big analogy for Mal and his broken psyche. As long as he's broken, he needs the ship to serve as a transmitter between him and the outside world.

With that view, it's sometimes hard for me to wrap my mind around Serenity as a 10th character or as imbued with a personality or soul.

So, what does everyone else think?

Agentrouka, very thoughtful thread.
"yeah, what you said."

i don't see it as the 10th character, although i've got no problem with those that do. the closest i came to feeling that way was in OiS, and the ship as metaphorical construct was pretty clear in OoG, but mostly, it's Mal- a little broken, a lot stubborn, on the fringe, below the common standard, cute as the dickens, takes a lickin and keeps tickin, got more room inside than a person might think...

10th character for me. Ship's got a personality of her own. Kinda midway between Mal (stubborn suicidally loyal, ready to do whatever's necessary) & Inara (beautiful, dignified, classy), in fact.

'Course, I grew up watching/reading space opera, so I'm well-versed in reading personality into inanimate objects (and, occasionally, actors ).
