This article from CNN talks about these shows being cancelled but instead of replacing them with NEW shows, they are talking of replacing them with shows that have been cancelled and bringing them back. They mention Futurama and King of the Hill. We need to rise up and make them know for sure that the browncoats are here and we want Firefly back!

-------------------
PASADENA, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Fox's veteran comedy "Malcolm in the Middle" will end its seven-season run May 14, while "That '70s Show," now in its eighth season, will bow out four days later, the network said Tuesday.

For the homestretch, "Malcolm" will return to Sundays beginning January 29, opening the night at 7 p.m., a slot generally occupied by cartoon reruns.

Meanwhile, Fox is in conversations with former "That '70s Show" stars Ashton Kutcher and Topher Grace to return for the show's finale, Fox entertainment president Peter Liguori said during the network's portion of the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour.

While the end for "Malcolm" and "That '70s Show" comes after long, successful runs, the untimely exit of the network's Emmy-winning but low-rated comedy "Arrested Development" after three seasons -- two of them abbreviated -- brought up a lot of questions.

Although the network touts airing the two-hour block of the final four episodes of "Arrested's" current order on February 10 as "season finale," Liguori stressed that a future return of the show to Fox is "highly unlikely."

"Arrested's" producers, Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV, are fielding offers from two networks, Showtime and ABC, which are interested in picking up the acclaimed series.

With no strong new comedy additions in the past couple of seasons ready to fill the void left by the departing comedies, the network's brass are putting a lot of muscle behind the rollout of its midseason comedies "Free Ride" and "The Loop," using the network's best launching pad, the blockbuster "American idol," to help their chances.

The partially improv "Free Ride" is slated for a March 1 preview, following a special 90-minute episode of "Idol," and "Loop" is getting a preview March 15, leading out of an "Idol" results show. On March 12, "Free Ride" moves into its regular Sunday 9:30 p.m. slot, temporarily replacing "American Dad," while "Loop" will relocate to its regular Thursday 8:30 p.m. period March 16.

Fox also is taking another look at two comedies that have been off the schedule for a while.

"King of the Hill," which is not in production but has never been officially canceled, might come back as early as January 2007 if discussions with the series' producers are successful, Liguori said.

Meanwhile, there haven't been any active negotiations to revive "Futurama," which, much like "Family Guy" before it, is enjoying a second life on Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" late-night block. But Fox executives are keeping a close eye on the series' newfound success.

I love Malcomb in the Middle. But then again, the mom reminds me a lot of my own mom....and I am kind of a girl cross between Malcomb and Francis. My brother is Reese all over again. And my little sister is a girl version of Dewey.

I can relate on so many levels.

Everyone one of those shows should be cancelled, especially Malcolm in the Middle and King of The Hill. Futurama was ok at best, but they already have Family Guy American Dad and The Simpsons. They dont need Futurama and nobody needs King of The Hill.

It can't be coincidental that the shows they're thinking of bringing back are all animation. I wonder if the profit margin and potential long-term longevity of animated shows makes them more attractive to resurrect, or if it's simply that with animation it's not as much of a concern whether you can get the original cast back or not.

THAT 70'S SHOW, I am certainly glad to see the back end of. In the 8 years that was on, it was never that funny to begin with.

But MALCOLM I actually liked and enjoyed on a regular basis. I also dug it because Lois reminds me so much of my own mom that it's almost scary. And Hal has to be in the top ten or top five funniest sit-com dad's ever created. He actually puts Homer to shame. Admittedly, the last few years has shown some signs of aging, but they are still capable of cranking out incredibly funny and highly memorable episodes, like this years season premiere "Burning Man". There's nothing like a camper exploding into flames to get you in a good mood.

I had heard that this was going to be the last year for it anyways, but still. Kinda sad to see a show that started out as their biggest sitcom since THE SIMPSONS become their lowest rated show, I think.

With this, as well as the demise of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, the only reason I'll be watching FOX now is for 24. And for laughs, only MY NAME IS EARL and THE OFFICE.

Wow, Im surprised both shows lasted this long anyways. Both shows jumped the shark a while back.

When your MAIN CHARACTER leaves and you continue, I mean good grief talk about flogging a horse. I said Surely they wont continue always being in the Foremans house with the Foreman's parents with both Foreman children, one of whom was the shows main focus, gone!! but they did!! OMG! The show was already on a downward spiral and officially jumped the shark when Topher Grace left. . .Hrm like killing off your title character . . . Oh wait, sorry, Bitter much?

AND

Malcom in the Middle. Everyone knows its a ratings gimic to introduce a new child ala the Brady Bunch, or Growing Pains or Family Ties. Nope, doesnt work. So MitM officially Jumped Shark when they brought on Jamie. How can you be the middle kid of 4 anyways? Malcom didnt officially become the middle kid until Jamie was born.

*Sigh*

But yea, any possibility to bring Firefly back cant be bad. But frankly I think Firefly is a bad bad bad fit at Fox. Why SciFi keeps passing just confirms my opinion of their Execs . .Why take up a Great show with a built in fanbase when we can keep putting out cutrate Made for SciFi movies with has been stars in it??

Oooo got long. Mea Culpa guys. Didnt mean to run on.

That's kind of sad. I liked both shows. Oh well, they had good long runs and I've lost track of them by now anyways. I'm prolly gonna pick up both shows on DVD.

King of the Hill I've never really liked. It has the occasional good moment, usually when Hank's dad shows up or Hank says he's gonna kick somebody's ass, but other than that, it sucked. It felt like it was trying to be a too-serious Simpsons and just fell flat.

If they bring back Futurama and Firefly to replace Malcolm and '70's show I will be completely happy with TV again.

Actually, the introduction of Jamie didn't really bother me. I know that the addition of a baby is usually a show-killer moment. But in this case, it wasn't arbitrary. Jane Kaczmarek was actually pregnant, so instead of hiding it, they decided to write it into the show. Jamie himself hasn't made the show too cutesy. If anything, Jamie gives the show the opportunity to show how vastly irresponsible they are towards Jamie.

"And the moral of the story is, I'll screw you over in a heartbeat, just like they screw me over. It's jus the way it is around here."

Its a shame about the cancelling of Malcolm in the middle, that show was awesome (though it won't make a huge differance to me since I have a basic 4 channels thing of uk tv and they have barely showed any of it). But the possibility of more Firefly (or even Futurama) is shiny ^^

If Fox is re-eevaluating cancelled shows, would it be too much to ask for them to bring back Brisco County, Jr. as well as Firefly?

This is how i shall defend King of the Hill by relaying a small part of an episode:

The son, Bobby chubby a little awkward and funny, tries smoking, the dad, Hank whose character is defined by the fact that he mows his postage stamp size yard with a riding mower which has a beerholder, decides he will teach Bobby a lesson.
Bobby will smoke a carton of cigarettes till the ciggies are done he is sick and therefore done with cigarettes. Now Hank is a proud proud Texan America so when Bobby holds the cigarette between his thumb and foreginger Hank questions him
"What nationality are you." Bobby's answer "American" Hank's response "then why are you holding that cigarette like a Nazi!"
Hank proceeds to show him how to smoke and they both end up addicted to nicotine and attended NA

Fox already tried That '80s Show. As expected, no one really wanted to relive that decade and so it was quickly cancelled.

Both are at the end of their life span anyway... the writing has run dry and the rag has been rung out... it's one of the reasons why Seinfeld cancelled... if you name a situation the writers could've easily named the show and season that that show aired...

What they aired for like nearly 10 seasons each? That's what I call a successful TV Show..

All I can say is GOOD. Those shows sucked bigtime, especially Malcolm in the Middle. The early 70's show seasons were OK though. Maybe this goes to show FOX that the shows that they cancel are better than the ones they have on at the moment. Sure they brought back Family Guy, but it isn't the same. Sure, bringing back Futurama will be cool, but we all know those dumb fs will pre-empt it for football and baseball, AGAIN. Lets see here, IF Firefly was brought back, what would happen? Perhaps one these scenarios:

1) They screw it up the same way as before
2) They find a NEW way to screw it up
3) Joss Whedon tells them to shove it up their asses (you know, politely)
4) They (FOX) will tell Joss what to do even more so than before
5) It stays faithful to Joss' vision, but nobody watches it (AGAIN), because people, on average are dumb hicks and would rather watch a dumb-dumb show like American Idol, and is cancelled after a few weeks.

OR (in our dreams)

6) It becomes a smash hit, everyone watches it, insanity ensues, and Joss and the gang win every award show for television and it lasts longer than Star Trek did.

I'm gonna miss Malcolm. It was one of the few sitcoms I've ever seen that was actually intelligent.

"Burning Man" had almost enough motifs and symbolism to be a Joss product: Hal becoming a parody of "The Man" (and being symbolically destroyed at the festival's climax), Malcolm rebirthing himself right back where he started, Dewey's vindication, Reese and Lois bonding.

I'm just sorry Francis couldn't have been there too.

I especially love Hal's utterly deadpan summation of. . . well, pretty much every human war ever fought ("we make up arbitrary boundaries and fight to the death over them").

I know. It kinda paved the way for other sit-coms in that they were shot single camera, had no laugh track, went on location instead of being confined to a studio and worked on different levels.

It's interesting to say that it had some Joss characteristics, because my favorite episode of the whole series, and probably the best one was it's version of "The Body", which was an episode called "Health Scare" where Hal and Lois had to wait for the results of his biopsy to come in. And theres this scene in the ep that really shows off the storytelling powers the show has.

Hal has gone into the boys room and is giving this little monologue to the boys, which is probably the most paternal he's ever been towards them. The tragedy of this is, Malcolm and Resse had slipped out earlier to go to a party, so he's essentially only talking to Dewey. Hal then goes over to kiss dummy Reese's head, which is a balloon that pops right next to Hal's head. Hal then begins to scream like a little girl, which wakes Dewey up. Dewey looks over to dummy Malcolm whose head is a Halloween mask and begins screaming as well. To go from the most touching scene in the whole series and then turn on a dime and have the funniest moment a second later is just genius.

And then theres also Francis's comeback line during the fight. "For your information, my mother is a sadistic control freak, AND IT WOULD NEVER OCCUR TO HER TO MAKE ME COCO!!!"

You wanna talk about an Emmy injustice? Hows about Bryan Cranston never winning an Emmy for his role and always losing to fuckin Brad Garrett.

Cybersnark, what are some of your fave episodes?

Hmm....did that article actually ever say that they were cancelled? They might have just decided 7 and 8 seasons was enough. Kinda like Buffy.

Oh well. They had good runs. Never really watched Malcolm myself (except for Reynolds), but i'll miss That 70's Show. I found it increasingly interesting to see if it would last as long as the 70's themselves, and it nearly did. It isn't as good as it used to be, though, but still better than most shows out there.

Firefly season 2!

Although i'm not sure how we'd all feel, and the actors, if we had to suffer through it being cancelled again. Don't know if i wanna risk it, even as good as new eps would inevitably be....

I loved That 70's Show, but the one episode from the post-Topher season I watched was horrible. Did anyone else notice that the character they brought in to replace Eric disappeared only to be replaced by an even new character that was a combo of Eric and Kelso? Now that is lazy writing! What is Ashton Kutcher going to do anyway? If we get Firefly or Futurama back and lose Ashton, I'll kiss a FOX exec.

PS King of the Hill is hilarious because it captures so much of what's funny about Texas, Oklahoma, etc. Peggy always reminds me of my grandma.

(Dons Jayne hat, chambers a round into Vera, then holds her in classic Jayne pose) SHINY !!!

Now lets be bad guys & gals.

P.S. Would have replied sooner but The OC came on and I had to watch (yes I'm a straight guy who watches The OC that a problem). Now if you'll excuse me I'll be in my bunk watching the rest of the Firefly series on DVD and also the BDM.
