Sorry if this issue has been brought up before, but I have a query.

I was just watching Serenity, and it occured to me as they were searching Miranda, that none of the people there appeared to have been killed by Reavers. If they were created on Miranda, then why didn't they kill the citizens? It seems it would have been easy with all the people stoned by the pax...easy pickings.

Anyway, just wondering if my fellow Browncoats could give me some insight!

Thanks!

Probably because as the people that developed into the reavers got to the stage of becoming canibalisitic, the others who became to weak to live died. The reavers only kill for the thrill of the hunt. Everyone on Miranda were probably too far gone for the Reavers to get any sort-of thrill from hunting them.

Well, only 1/10 of 1% of the population became
Reavers. It was mentioned in the film that the
population of Miranda was 30 million. So, what's
1% of that? 300,000? Then 1/10th of 300,000?
3,000? On a big planet, 3,000 Reavers couldn't
get to even *most* of the population before, well
obviously, the Pax could.

Or even more simply... The people died before the reavers became fully canabalistic.

yeah, I kinda wounnered about that one too. The research and rescue ship is the *only* thing in the area they walk thru that looks at all damaged, and it looks like it crashed into the building. Maybe they were boarded in orbit? But then there wouldn't have been that much of the ship left... There would have been reavers around the ship, and I'd have expected to see more general vandalism. Not to mention the lack of damage and bodies inside the ship. hmmm

Anyone have any ideas?

That's precisely it: easy pickins.

It got me thinking into how the Reaver psychosis would've worked. Think of it as a desire to corrupt everything that's pure and clean--i.e., severe anarchical tendencies. So anything that seems all nice and orderly, they can't help but want to defile and ruin. It's not just that Reavers want to kill (otherwise why the harpoons and close-range weapons); they want to destroy.

The folks on Miranda who were PAX-ified were pretty much defiled already. Add to that that they wouldn't've put up a fight, struggled, screamed, or nothing, then there's nothing to satisfy a Reaver's ultra-sadism. It's probably the same reason why Reavers won't attack one another: they delight in pain, and they're already ugly as sin, so causing pain / defilement to another Reaver is pointless. It's also likely why they ruin their own selves in their 'off' time.

That rescue mission, rest in peace, could've been the first thing to truly satisfy their psychotic craving for inflicting pain.

You mean 30,000. Thirty-thousand Reavers is a small town's worth. Since they're capable of flying ships (and overclocking the engines), I don't think that distance around the planet was a huge factor. KF

Look in my eyes, Lord, and my sins will play out on them as on a screen. Read them all.
Forgive what you can and send me on my path. I will walk on until you bid me rest.

Well 3 things of note.

1) The rescue ship video showed decayed corpses so they arrived on Miranda quite some time after the PAX episode, probably to investigate why the rest of the 'Verse had lost contact.

2) The rescue ship is about the same size as a Serenity shuttle, so this was a subship of something larger that may have stayed in orbit. If I had to guess at events I'd say that the bigger ship made it to orbit without harassment and sent down one or more rescue ships to investigate the problem. These people managed to walk around Miranda taking samples and recordings withoutrunning into Reavers but before they could make it back to the main ship they were attacked in the air by Reavers and crashed. I'm assuming that the message was a log recording either waved to the mother ship or made because contact with the mother ship was lost. I also assume that the mothership made it back and reported. There are a LOT of potential reasons you could loose a colony in the 'Verse, the fact that the Alliance knew the origins of the Reavers means that some version of this report made it back to the core.

3)From what we've seen of Reaver attacks they don't tend to leave bodies where they killed them. In Bushwacked all the passengers were strung up in the hold even if that wasn't where they would have been in the attack. There were NO bodies on the survey ship, the woman that made the recording was attacked and dragged away.

My suspicion is that it took a while for Reavers to go cannibal on Miranda, long enough that the PAX victims were no longer edible by the time the food ran out. That forced them into space, obviously the survey happened before the big Reaver fleet had parked itself in orbit else the survey mother ship would not have made it through.

Possibly, the survey team landed, looked around, got jumped by reavers, hustled back to the ship and took off, then found the stowaway. All hell breaks loose, the ship crashes again and is left where we find it.
