ok, try to introduce myself, please forgive bad grammar etc. i try to write as good as possible:
when my girlfriend and i decided to watch a movie this special evening, even after a long discussion we were not able to chose one for both of us. So everyone choosed his own movie and we seperated for this evening (nothing special about this, three months ago we left our common apartment because we couldn‘t agree about living together behind the same walls, but believe me, we love each other very much ;-) ).

So she went in some Robert Redford movie, I took my Coke and sat down for Serenity. I had never heard about Firefly (It hasn‘t been aired here until now), in germany the info about the film was thin. But depending on SciFi in my opinion the world was not blessed in the last years and I take every chance to watch, what‘s coming up.

I left the movie being overwhelmed by the athmosphere, intrigued by the music, fascinated by the story and its characters and at home I started to read everything about this universe.

The week after I owned the DVD-Set and my girlfriend and me started watching - it was magnificent! She‘s no SciFi-Fan but was assimilated after the pilot. From now on Firefly-evening without her was forbidden.

The warmth and humanity is maybe the aspect I like the most. But every episode raised the question: Why so few! Why did they have to stop? The answer was staggering … what could have become of this series if…? Ok, I think you have heard all this lots before.

After finishing the series today … episode 14 just watched, I decided to login here, because I was lurking around here as a guest for several weeks so I am only starting another "wowwhatanexperiencenoiamafan"-Thread, but it was the right thing to do after watching the last episode.

Trust me … I started recommending movie and series at every possible opportunity … and there are two frieds of mine, who where intrigued either after watching the movie. I refused to burn my DVDs and tried to convince people to buy the DVDs supporting Serenitys success in europe (ok mainly City of Duisburg-Germany) and it worked twice.

In Germany we have to wait for Serenity-DVD release until march and I hope, that it will be a success.

thx for your attention and for this great website and greetings from the old world

Lightspeed, we are happy to have you. I'm glad you're enjoying the series and the film so much.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but there is a couple of reasons why I am here and not on a German fanboard:

- The German way of debating things on the internet is too bossy for my taste.
- I always prefer a discussion with people from other countries (the different mindsets and all)
- I like to be sitting right at the source of information
- I don't like this latent self-praising attitude ("look Americans, we are German fans!"). I consider myself a fan just as everybody else, period. There is nothing special about it at all.

After all it never really occured to me joining a German Firefly forum. I'm for unity, not separation (And I don't have time for both, I might add).

Well i have no idea why you are so bitter CBY, but I didn´t intend any harm just wanted to invite you guys to the german board, too. For me its not important if a board is english or german or whatever but we have some people on the german board whose english isnt so good and so they settled there.

Also serious debating? Occasionally yeah, but not on that board ..

Welcome here, we're weird.

First thing is don't worry about your grammar. You certainly should try to improve if you want to talk to English speakers a lot but if you're only going to be talking to us and a few others you are doing well enough.

The second thing is that we are all happy to have you here, we're not the most normal group of people ever but I look on that as a good thing, and I hope you will too.

We were all overwhelmed but either the show or the movie, and we've been hooked ever since. We're very close becasue of it, we're family and you can be a part of it. I hope you will be, so welcome home.

-

If you want to see more of the show, or another movie, you need to make sure that more people hear about it. You need to spread the word, so tell all your friends.

Hah! She got assimilated!
Sorry, I'm restraining my Star-Trek references here.

Anyway, there are plenty more who've had a similar experience. Me, I'm waiting for the day when someone comes on here and says that Firefly / Serenity is what saved their marriage.

If you have ready access to buying more copies, might I suggest loaning your own copy? Then, if someone likes it well enough, offer to sell it to them then and there, then pick up another copy for yourself. I just recently did that with the DVD set I bought. Other people I know will have two copies, one designated as a 'loaner' set; that's another way of spreading the Firefly word. KF

Welcome Lightspeed. I see FollowMal has got you all equipped, so come and pull up a chair.

Just for you, we'll put on sauerkraut and some kielbasa. But you gotta promise to eat it with chopsticks. :)

Don't be afraid to post, most of us purposely don't use correct english anyway. Some of us on purpose, some by accident.

Guten Tag. Wie gehen Sie? Ich spreche nicht Deutsch. That's the extent of my language expertise from three years of German in high school. I try and learn how to say, "I don't speak your language." It's a handy thing. Je ne parles pas Francais.

The one thing that's the most important is: we all love Firefly and Serenity. That kinda breaks down a few language barriers when we hear people say they love it too.

Welcome and make yourself t'home.

Sorry, I am way too late, but "how do you go?" is a very interesting way to ask for someones health (I prefer to go forwards).

A teacher told me once: "If you hear a foreigner making a mistake correct him on the spot so he doesn't get used to it." So here is my (unwanted) little advice for you:

You have to put in the German relative pronoun "es" (it's an idiomatic phrase so "es" doesn't actually refer to something in this case) so the listener gets the right connotation.

--> Wie geht es Dir? (not polite, singular)
--> Wie geht es Ihnen? (polite, singular)

...and so on.

Since we've moved on to the subject of German grammar, I'm a bit unsure about something at the moment. Is "Ich spreche nicht Deutsch" grammatically incorrect or not? Usually one would say "Ich spreche kein Deutsch", but I'm not sure if "Ich spreche nicht Deutsch" might also be acceptable, even though sounds wrong.

Well, it's the same difference as in:
"I am not a good guy"
"I am no good guy"

The semantic truth conditions stay the same so both sentences are valid. You can see this by paraphrasing them:

"I am not a good guy" --> you (seen as an element) are not in the group of good guys.

"I am no good guy" --> "beeing a good guy" isn't part of you (seen as a group of attributes).

It means the same after all .

Well, considering my German lessons were 15 years ago...? I'm surprised my own self that I even remembered a few words.

See that's why I fully appreciate foreigners learning English at all. We have all sorts of grammatical rules that half our population does not even follow.

I swear, I'm much more refined in person. (comes from being a teacher IRL) I just don't particularly put out the effort on these boards. :)

Good to hear!

Say, sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I was curious about something: do your DVDs have German subtitles? If not, are you having to import them?

While we got on the subject of languages, I can always point out that my name is German, even if I don't speak a word of it (Kaiser; the name I use online is an unconventional Russian spelling of it, I think). And all the French I know, I picked up from rap music. My Spanish and Japanese are fine, but I'm wanting to maybe study Chinese and French, the former due in no small part to Firefly {^^}. Oh yeah, and the business opportunity. Firefly's an added personal incentive.

Lastly, it's been my experience that the people who apologize for their possibly poor grammar always end up speaking (or writing) English very clearly. All the folks who really need to apologize, they never do--and they usually are native English speakers, too. KF

What do you mean by "them"? We don't need to import the Firefly boxes, if this is what you meant. I bought mine in a normal store (called "Media Markt").

We have a normal German Firefly box set with German dubbing. There are subtitles too (I guess), but I generally prefer to watch movies in English without subtitles (most DVDs allow this) because actors use their own voice and my English is good enough by now to understand about 85% of a movie the first time I see it (contractions, accents and uncommon terms can be pretty diffcult to understand).

I don't like subtitles in general because you can either read them or watch the actual movie.

In fact, normally all foreign movies and TV-series are dubbed with German audio tracks when they go to the cinemas or on TV here. This is good for people who are not fluent in English, but it can be very annoying if you already know the original voices and/or script since many details tend to get lost in translation.

On most German DVD releases you can choose between the English and the German audio track. Actually that is one of the reasons I almost never go to the cinema any longer but wait till the movies are available on DVD, becaus in that way I can watch them with the original dialog in it.

I sometimes switch the subtitles on, though, but the English ones, because when I don't understand what is being said, it normally is not because I don't know the words they use, but because sometimes there are speakers with a heavy accent.

I think it's always difficult to understand movies in a foreign language, no matter how fluent you are. (My German prof at Middlebury College spoke and understood English fluently, but she said she still didn't understand everything in American movies, even after living here for several years.) And understanding 85% of Serenity the first time through, with all the fast quips and Chinese phrases - CBY, I'm impressed.

Wilkommen, Lightspeed, and danke sehr, Kessie, for the link to the German site. I'd like a chance to practice my German sometime, and what better way to do it than by talking about Firefly?

I watch every DVD on English for years now (if I can) and got very used to it.

The 85%-guess is the average for movies without heavy accents. There seems to be something like a "standard movie language" so the overall pool of words isn't that big. I have the impression that they use pretty basic English most of the time.

Trip Tucker and our Badger on the other hand are two of the difficult cases. Still having problems with them even after listening to their utterances countless times.

It never hurts to have a dictionary within reach

It is because of Shakespeare. The moment he said the phrase, "Between you and I," the grammar of the English language was doomed. The phrase is disgusting, grammatically the same as, "Give it to I." Thankfully most people are far more careful than Shakespeare, but I do believe that the volume of the circulation of such grammar means it is only a matter of time before we start saying things like, "Me am going to the store."

Also there are some things that are taught which are absurd, for example the word, "ain't," contraction of, "am not," is frowned on and the phrase, "Aren't I," which means, "Are I not," is actually encouraged in most places.

Then there is what Winston Churchill pointed out, some rules, such as not ending a sentence with a preposition, are archaic and more or less pointless, he said criticism for that was something, "up with which I will not put."

Even if you know the rules, and follow the rules, the language is vague. There is an on going debate about what the word, "than," actually is. Some claim it is a preposition, "He's taller than me," others claim it is a conjunction, "You're better than I am."

Well which it is dictates grammar, if it's a conjunction that saying, "You're better than me," is as bad as Shakespeare. On the other hand if it is a preposition that is the one and only correct way.

Each actor has a German "counterpart" who dubs him as long as possible (could be several years). In the case of our show they chose pretty young "dubbers" and I think the selection is okay. Some characters sound older/younger as expected, but the voices themselves are all right.

One interesting point about the actual translation: They don't translate words like "wave", "shepard", "alliance", "companion" at all. So people watching Firefly in (claimed) German actually hear a mixture of German, Chinese AND English.

"They sent a wave!" --> "Sie sendeten eine wave!"
"She is a companion!" --> "Sie ist eine companion!"

I don't say I could have done it better myself, but the result is suboptimal. I mean, people are getting paid for this...
