Okay, I suppose it's not really fair to open yet another Bash Fox thread, but still, I'm gonna say...

It's greed.

If Fox hadn't been so all-fired impatient with our show, if they'd been willing to take a loss on it for a year or two, there might have been enough time for it to catch on with a larger number of viewers.

But no. They had to have profitability *now*. So they ditched our big damn heroes like so much go se.

So, what others of the Seven Deadlies sent Fox on the path to the special hell? Or do we have to define a few new sins just for them?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't disagree on any particular point.
Many people forget that the first two seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation were quite poor. If any series deserved an early cancellation, that was it. But suddenly, in season three, it hit its stride, and went on to become great (IMO).
Because it was a syndicated show, it didn't have the same ratings expectations as those on a network.
Firefly, by contrast, was already hitting its stride in its first season (a rare occurence). But Fox, still a somewhat small network with pretentions to bigness, wanted an X-Files-type of hit, and was impatient.
Plus, 2002-04 was the heyday of the glut of wretched reality shows, and Fox was one of the worst offenders. The fact is that trailer trash would rather watch "Who wants to marry the apprentice of my dad's surviving fearful bachelleor millionaire" than an intelligent, well-plotted show that (gasp!) makes the viewer have to think.
I think the climate is better for Firefly now. When ABC took a chance on Lost, a very well-written serial that became a mega-hit, it showed that there is still a market for good writing and genuine stories.
The sad thing is, that even if Firefly had only lasted for three seasons, we would have over 60 glorious episodes now. That's what upsets me so much.
Start with the part where Jayne gets knocked out by a 90 pound girl. 'Cause I don't think that's ever getting old.
Some network really should pick up the show...
It's like a dream come true for them! I mean to have a show START with millions of viewers! That's un-thinkable! With that, plus some decent advertising, MEGAHIT!
Here is what should be done (for the million and third time):
1. A network, the new CW for example, picks up Firefly, for a sixteen-episode season taking place after Serenity. The main cast includes our seven remaining big damn heroes, and maybe an eighth, newly introduced character for some on-ship tension or something to that degree. Wash and Book are common guest stars in dreams (in Wash’s case) and flashbacks (in Book’s case).
2. The show is put in the Monday or Tuesday at Eight O’clock Eastern Time Slot, which will be empty after the departure of “Seventh Heaven” at the end of this season. This slot doesn’t have to compete with your “American Idol,” or any of that garbage.
3. T.V Advertising runs during the other havily watched CW shows, such as “Smallville,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Everwood,” “Charmed,” and the rest of the bunch, for a couple moths ahead of time (exactly what was done with Prison Break on Fox).
4. Primer the 2 hour season opener on its given night, then re-air it during the weekend, or immediately before the next episode.
I think I'll make up one for them, ignorance. I doubt they even watched the show besides the necessary pitch that Joss probably gave them. Other than that they were just too impatient and wanted to make more money off of ordinary people (so they don't have to pay actors) who make fools of themselves on national tv.
And the other sad part is that the prizes are nothing compared to what the network racks in. The grand prize on a reality tv show is probably about 1/2 of a shows commercial cost of advertising. Overall though greed, and ignorance to top the evil Fox cake.
Every day it amazes me that no one has looked at the DVD sales, or checked out sites like this to see how gorram profitable Firefly would be. Who among us would miss a single episode if it were ressurected? I would go out of my way, even to the point of asking for Firefly night off from work, and they'd know damn well why I wasn't willing to work that night unless someone could tape it for me. Hell, I would go down to the cable company and have them give me cable TV instead of just Internet, and pay the monthly fees outta my pocket to see new episodes of Firefly. And after I'd seen all of the new season, I'd buy it when it came out on DVD, even with the tapes I'd make. And I know I'm not the only one.
It's sad that the only people with brains working in TV are the writers for the shows, and then only occasionally. I think the people making decisions on which shows get more episodes and which shows get the can would benefit from a little good old fashioned human intelligence. Put a bullet in the brainpan of everyone involved in American Idol and "Who Wants to Look Like a Skank on TV", and sell the rights to Firefly to a network that will give us more episodes.
I'm gonna go with sloth and pride.
Sloth, because not taking the time to really observe the show and reflect on it's probable future popularity, or the time and resources to properly promote it, was just plain lazy.
Pride, because that is probably one factor that stopped them from giving up the rights. They don't want it to become the mega-smash it deserves to be because they'd end up looking stupid.
you bring up a good point about Star Trek TNG but also X Files had a shakey start and they stuck with it because the critics liked it. i am still surprised it made it on FOX. not to mention other shows that they gave extended chances. arrested developement for instance is funny but has poor ratings and they gave it 3 seasons. i think the bigwigs at FOX just aren't shiny when it comes to scifi/fantasy. if you notice thier line up is centered around bad sitcoms and reality TV. the only show i watch on FOX anymore is Family Guy which they cancelled twice already. we need a network with vision to pick up firefly.
No need to be fair when it comes to Fox.
This seems to be a popular idea. Maybe we should create an all new level of , one specifically reserved for execs.
I have to believe that somewhere in the halls of FOX, someone is yelling, "JOHNSON! What in the hell is this five-year-old series that is outselling "Lost" on DVD, and why was it cancelled?!?! Whoever was responsible, I want his head on a PLATTER!"
Which one? Seriously, I think we could argue all 7. Plus a few extra. Is "being too stupid to live" a sin?
Greed. Gluttony. Lack of honor. Lack of vision. Sheer idiocy (my son got a look at the Periodic Table of Elements the other day and remarked, re the cancellation of Firefly, "The universe is made of dumnium, Mom.") But then, stupidity is rampant.
I don't think until we can prove there is a market for intelligent TV that we are gonna get any more. I mean, if you can make all that money of some crappy "reality" show...why put out $4mil an episode on something decent?
I wish I was Bruce Wayne (or married to him) then I'd have the money and the technology and we'd just take it over and do it right. SIGH.
It will rise in perfect light.
I have loved the stars too fondly
