Why would folks believe the Miranda transmission was real?

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I am new to the 'verse. My question has to do with the transmission that Mal sent out about Miranda. The Operative said that the transmission had weakened Parliament, but had not stopped them altogether. My question is this - why would the public believe that the transmission was real to begin with? Couldn't Parliament just say that it was a well orchestrated hoax, fabricated by the Independents to stir up unrest?

I'm also wondering why the Alliance would stop chasing after River. I doubt that Miranda is the only secret locked in her brain if she was in the room with a passel of key members of Parliament. And anyhow - was River the only Reader at the Academy? Were there other children, too? Where are they?

Gah!!! Need the series to continue...

Many would not, and the Alliance would do their best to deflect the information. Some would though, more than a few, I have a clear view on what happens after Serenity, you'll just have to wait patiently til i'm done putting it to paper.

That said though, admitting that there were still "Independents" around who were that well-connected and skilled as to be able to fake such a verse-spanning transmission would make the Alliance appear weak. I don't conjure they'd like that any more than their security contractors would.

Also, even if most people don't believe it, some would. And it's those few who would be compelled to ask the awkward questions.

It's kinda like the UFO phenomena: the Government (or someone) spends so much effort denying it that there's gotta be something there.

I think it's less about knowing the truth than about being willing to think critically of those who tell you the "Truth." If, after examining the evidence, you still wanna believe them, then you have that right (I honestly can't picture Mal disagreeing), but you owe it to yourself (and to those around you) to hear the evidence.

They don't need to convince anyone; they just need to get people suspicious enough that they demand proof that the Alliance wasn't involved in Miranda.

An "official" plastic cubey thingy would probably have all sorts of unbreakable authentication built into it, and the transmittion may also contain some sort of "seal of authenticity" that precludes fakery. So anyone who recorded the signal could also tell who recorded it, and where, and when. So it may not be possible for the Alliance to claim it's a fake.

SOMEONE is sure to try and get to Miranda now, and when they do they will discover that the signal is real, and the message is true.

Maybe. The Operative himself said they may still come after River - he didn't know. But perhaps they are in no state to launch another black-ops operation, considering how disasterously the first one went for them. Better to just lie low and try to wait the current crisis out.

Interesting question. :) Here's my take on it.

Miranda, the planet itself, is not really a secret; just a painstakingly avoided subject: "Half of history is hiding the truth." In the BDM, "How can it be there's a whole planet called Miranda and none of us knowed that?" Kaylee then says: "Wait a tick, yeah. Some years back, there was call for workers to settle on Miranda. Daddy talked about it. Nothing about it on the Cortex. History, Astronomy, it's not in there."

So, my guess is, that once people are reminded again of the existence of Miranda, it will be close to impossible to deny what happened there; for it really only takes one reporter to investigate (or, conversely, only one reporter being denied access to an investigation!). Either way, the Parliament is screwed; if they brand Miranda "classified", then people will believe for certain they're hiding a terrible truth; and if they let people visit there, well, that's obviously not exactly to their benefit, either. :)

The only way the Miranda incident could be swept under the rug, is by having people forgot about the existence of Miranda altogether; and that cat is certainly out of the bag now.

The people don't necessarily have to believe the transmission. Just some of them. And those some will start to watch the gov. very closely for the next while. So, they will have to be on there best behaviour until people forget again.

If you think about it, had the Operative not triggered River she wouldn't have pulled up the whole "Miranda" memory so completely. Yeah, bits of it may have floated into her consciousness and she probably would have told Simon but had it not been for that seriously intense demonstration of her "skills" in the bar fight scene, I doubt the Captain or the others would have taken her seriously.

I think the the Alliance is likely to carefully consider their next move, if any, against River and company. I'm sure if there are other scary things in River's brain the last thing they want is to bring those out like Miranda!

Besides, I think the next movie or series will go in an altogether different direction so we won't have to worry so much about this.

I would bet that there is a fair segment of the population who won't believe it is real. As some of the other posts have said, planting the seeds of doubt about the Alliance is the important thing.

Though your comment does remind me of something similar in another sci-fi series (from long ago) that went along that line. In the "V" miniseries, the rebels went to great trouble to infiltrate a live tv broadcoast, so they could expose the Visitors true reptilian nature and plan to rob Earth of resources. The rebels pull it off, only to have the Visitors rebroadcast the "true" version, and claim the truth to be a hoax.

That's part of the brillance - there are multiple story lines to be explored in the future!
