Someone on another forum linked to this after I linked to the full Fruity Oaty Bar commercial.

Yeah, I'm never reading this comic.

If you know the line from the movie and know the directors name and spend time making a comic dissing it means you very invested in your hate. It also means that you watched to movie close enough to quote it so the jokes on Sore Thumbs.

that would maybe be offensive if it was funny...but it's not. seriously, speaking outside of my Firefly fandom, that has no comedic value at all. who makes this? the fact alone that they made a comic with a failed attack at Whedon and Firefly fans speaks volumes about how sad his existence must be.

oh, and as an artist, the poor art style used for that comic is far more offensive then the dialogue.

Have to admit, kinda funny. And a great historical commentary on the "three-fifths" compromise.

And they have a point. I always found that dialogue (and situation - talking robotic wife?), one of the most absurd parts of the film.

obviously, this guy doesnt realize what he's started. TO ARMS!!!

heh, seriusly tho, it kinda seems like a bad move on his part- the number of people who actively know and dislike firefly/serenity and therefor would apreciate the "humor" have got to be significantly smaller then hte number of browncoats, and probably a whole lot less fanatical. it just doesnt seem like it would be "worth it". and people who know nothing of whedon one way or another, even if they "got it", wouldnt find it amusing. also, i really think he has no right to insult anything so long as he writes *that*.

I agree. At most this "comic" has turned my head for the moment it took me to read it. Beyond that, why would anyone give anymore consideration?

Bah, let it be and maybe it'll go away. If you pay it attention you'll only encourage it.

Eh. Sore Thumbs isn't really 'up there' as far as webcomics are concerned, if you ask me.

I mean, come on, Penny Arcade is likely the most-read webcomic out there. And those guys are avid fans, too--maybe not as avid as us, but still.

I don't find it offensive. Just it tries to be funny like Doom tried to be metaphorical (meaning the movie, not the game). KF

Lighten up, guys. Funny or not (matter of taste), it's just a comic.

When Browncoats start freaking over little stuff like this, is when people start to mentally associate us with the kind of Star Trek fans that get married in full Klingon atire.

First.. yeah, chill. It's just a comic. It's not like it's a picture of Mohammad with a bomb for a turban or anything. ;)

And the 3/5 reference is important. Those of us who are Americans really should have recognized it on sight. It's in the Constitution.

Quote:

(Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.)

In other words, prior to the 14th Amendment, a black slave was worth "only 3/5 of a person" for purposes of assessing population.

Hey what's wrong with being married in full Klingon atire? lol No but seriously; that new Star Trek theme wedding in Vegas, where you get married on the desk of one of the Enterprises is pretty cool, and I'm not even that big of a Treker.

Honestly after I first read that comic I was kinda' like "You FRELLERS!" I know I shouldn't let it piss me off but it does. And I use frell since they don't respect Browncoats maybe they respect Scapers, although I doubt they're even that clever (that sounds kinda' wrong, I'm both a Browncoat and a Scaper (of course more Browncoat) and was insulting neither fan group).

See, I ordinarily get tickled with delight whenever someone references history offhandedly like that (one of the folks in our upcoming Serenity RPG group has a backstory that parallels the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus by Lincoln, for instance, and that made me all manner of pleased when I saw that). But, yeah, it's just... kind of a downer as far as jokes are concerned.

Like I'm saying, there're good webcomics, and there're boring ones. Sore Thumbs is one of the ones I never bothered with. Even Order of the Stick ( http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript) is better, and he uses stick figures (DnD-heavy references, though, so it's esoteric humor). KF

NERVOUSPETE

I read back about twelve issues.

I don't know. It's kinda bugging me. I keep thinking it SHOULD be funny, but it isn't. I like the concept of the psychotic dad who the children dote on. The expressions are amusing and the some of the character tweaks also. It's just... it's not really funny. *Gngh*

Which is a shame, because I'd welcome a genuinely funny attack on Firefly/Serenity/Whedon. It gets a bit dull reading web-comics eulogising over it. Serenity does have some problems, but still was a solid 4/5 film for me that I loved. But this comic... *sigh*... it just isn't that funny.

Albeit it is interesting.

But please:

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please (fingers hurt) please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please (wrists too actually) please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please (and my sanity is fracturing come to mention it...) please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please...

... don't flame the chap or the website. Don't get angry or upset. Don't go about shaking your fists at the comic. If we email or shout, or scream, or post then we'll only look like creepy jerks, so let's not, okay? Not that I'm assuming we'd be so uncool as to do so, but I figured, since I'm not used to fandom and Firefly is my first true geek love, that I'd err on the side of caution and warn.

Let's be cool.

Now someone out there insult our beloved in an amusing and incisive manner that raises cutting points, and I shall shake them in a manly fashion by the hand.
