Okay, I have now watched Serenity for the umpteenth time and I was wondering if anyone has had the same thought as I did last night. If this has been mentioned before I apologize. Anyway, I have alwasy thought the scene in which Inara sets off the flashbomb was a bit odd because it was timed so perfectly, but then I started to think... why does she hahve a flash bomb? Did Mal bring in it in and I didn't notice? Does she personally own one and if so why? Does this have to do with her past? Okay so there is my random thoughts. If anyone could enlighten me I would appreciate it.

CYBERSNARK

Inara's smart --in the novelization, the Operative calls her a warrior in her own right.

The flashbomb was probably just one trick she had up her sleeve, like her own getaway ship stashed somewhere, a set of fake nails that can deliver toxins, "good-night kiss" lipstick, hairpins that can double as throwing knives, a necklace with a tracking beacon, jewels that are actually tiny explosives or smoke pellets. . .

The flash bomb was probably just the only one within reach at the moment.

When Mal & the Operative are having their first confrontation, Inara's probably running down a mental list of her weapons. (The garrotte? No, he's between me and the tapestry. The smoke bomb? Un-unh, he'd see me reach for it. EMP jammer? Wouldn't help. Knife? On my dresser, out of reach. Becon-call for my skimmer? Would take too long to get it here. Flashbomb? . . . Yeah, the flashbomb.)

I just bought the novelization (which was really hard to find outside the internet)and haven't had a chance to read it yet. Thanks for the input. I am curious as to Inara's secret and I know Joss always leaves hints. I was curious to see if this would be one of those moments.
