Don't know how popular Highlander is with Browncoats, but there was a Highlander convention in Scottland over the weekend, where a great deal of info was revealed. I thought I'd share it here with those interested. There are 3 (possibly 4) new HL related projects coming in the next year or so:

The Source: The fifth Highlander movie, written by TV series head writer David Abromowitz(sp), which is set 10-15 years from now, in a semi-apocalyptic future (oil has run out, global communication cut off). There are still few details about the plot, but it involves Duncan, Methos, and Joe teaming up with a group of Immortals to try to discover the source of immortality. The villain is "The Guardian", who is a taloned, blueish-white skinned fellow with super-natural speed, and is Immortal, but not the same "type" of immortal (i.e., the others cannot sense him). A 5 minute reel was shown at the con, which did reveal what fans might consider a big spoiler, so I will hide it:

Select to view spoiler:

It seems that Joe dies in this one

Vengance: The first Highlander Anime film. Also written by Abromowitz, and directed by one of the top anime directors (I forget the name, but he made Vampire Hunter D, and Ninja Scroll). Concerns a new Macleod, Collin, and his quest to kill the roman immortal that led the slaughter of his keltic village. Set roughly 85 years from now, the crux of the story is that Collin has spent the last 1000 years in the sole pursuit of his revenge, and has let his rage consume him. The Roman, on the other hand, has dedicated his life after the massacre to the pursuit of art, and peace. So, after a 1000 years, who's life is the more worthwhile? Peter Wingfield (Methos), Jim Byrnes (Joe) and Valentine Pelka (Kronos) are all doing voices, but not as their original characters, as the film features only all-new characters.

The Game: A Highlander videogame for 360, PS3, PSP and PC, developed by Eidos. A 3rd person adventure game, involving both modern-day levels, as well as flashbacks. Players will likely be able to choose between a male or female character (or create their own on PSP), and will develop their skills RPG style as they collect quickenings. Renegade watchers will be amongst the villains in the game. Methos is the player character's mentor, and will be a part of the game. Not expected to be released untill 2007 at the erliest.

New TV series: Not many details given about this one. What was said is that it would be set modern-day (between Endgame and The Source), will involve all new characters, and would revolve around what happens when immortals are "outed" to the world. Nothing is set in stone, however. The producers have a meeting this week with...wait for it.... FOX, to discuss the proposal.

So, of course, they're probably screwed on that count.

There is also the previosly announced Highlander comic starting this spring, which apparently picks up right after Conner MacLeod defeats the Kurgan in the first film, but follows the TV series continuity in which they were not the last 2 immortals.

So, for Highlander fans, there is a lot to look foreward to (even if it's with apprehension) in the next year.

Awesome post! Thanks for the info.

When Highlander ended, I didn't think I could ever be so bummed about a tv show leaving the air...boy did I set myself up for a kick sqaw in the old gem bag.

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to the game and the anime but NO MORE MOVIES! Christopher Lambert ruined them. He's frikkin Swedish or Swiss or whatever and he's playing a Scot? (I'm Scottish so I demand authenticity) I'm a hard-core fan of the series.

Not that I didn't enjoy highlander but it was on the air forever with a different versions and movies. What the heck is that about? A million episodes of a show that was okay and 15 episodes of the greatest show of all time!
Someone somewhere should burn in a very special level of hell!

Lambert's not in this film (Connor being dead and all). Adrian Paul is the star (and Exec. Producer, and fight choreographer, and 2nd unit director). Though, Adrian Paul isn't scottish either (then again, Daniel Craig is the first strictly english guy to play Bond). Though the storyline takes the series in new directions, they say they're trying to maintain the spirit and themes of the series over the movies. Having David A. write it it, IMO, a very good step in that direction.

Oh, and... what's a ringer?

That's a matter of perspective. There are plenty of Highlander fans who think the series was better than "okay" (there were some stinkers, and most of the movies suck, but it was a cool TV show), and believe it or not, there are people who don't like Firefly.

And there were only 121 episodes. .... okay, not counting the spin-off or horrible cartoon.

Didn't mean to offend anyone but it's like that when I think of any show that was on the air for a long time think Friends not a bad show not an especially good show but it went on for something like ten years. Ten years of self centered whiny 30 somethings who couldn't just grow up and stop being idiots about commitment and sex. I know some people don't like firefly and while I can understand that in an abstract kind of way I still think they're crazy. only 121 episodes does that include Highlander Raven?

Just reread you post and you already answered my Highlander Raven question. There was a cartoon? A kids cartoon? Cause the decapitation thing seems kinda harsh for children.

There weren't any decapitations in the 'toon (well, one, but off-screen). It was set several hundred years into the future, where immortals had learned to pass on their quickening and knowledge without the beheading, in order to build up the strength of the "chosen one" central charcter. And it was much worse than it sounds.

And no offense taken. I'm well aware it's not everyone's cup of tea. And when Highlander gets bad, it gets bad like no-one's business.

Oddly, some of that news sounds downright righteous and some makes me a bit worried ;p

Big Highlander fan (spent WAY too much money back in the day on the Highlander CCG :) But that's one show I wasn't terribly upset about when it ended. Some of that last season was definately starting to turn sour. And there really should only have been one movie, of course. (Endgame wasn't terribly bad, passing the torch to Connor and all. But the second movie just plain never happened, and the third was... basically the first movie again. :) So I have to be a little skeptical of another Highlander movie, even it's written by Abramowitz. I'll still see it... but skeptically :P

Now if only we could get this sort of news for Firefly, I'd be in heaven. (Another movie, a series, a cartoon, a videogame... :) And I still want to see a Serenity theme park/ gift shop ;p

I'm more looking forward to the new comic book series that's coming out soon. It's supposed to take place about five seconds after the first (and only good) movie.

Yeah I know Lambert's character is dead. And I know that Adrian Paul isn't Scottish but he does have the accent right. Lambert still sounded Swedish. It's just that this new movie coming out sounds terrible because they're fighting a frikkin blue immortal monster or something. And I liked The Raven. Amanda was hot and it was a semi-ok show. Or maybe it sucked. I can't remember. I watched it late at night when I was real tired and my judgment ain't so good when I'm tired.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Thanks for all the info Storymark. I am looking forward to any new material for Highlander.

The Source movie & its "near future semi-apocalyptic" setting sounds a little too close to the 2nd Highlander movie (you know the one we all try to forget ever happened) for my liking.

You could say the same about Buffy. And I'm a ~huge~ fan of that show.

That being said, Highlander didn't ignite the same passion in me that Buffy did. I like it for the same reason I like Stargate SG1. It's funny, entertaining, much more inventive than the usual TV fare and is willing to make fun of itself. Still, I've never seen a Highlander version of Hush or The Body, and without that level of writing showing up at least sometimes I'll never get obsessed with it.

Explains why my only obsessions were Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Babylon 5....
