The TV series spin-off of the Stars Wars film franchise will run to at least 100 episodes, according to producer Rick McCallum.

He told BBC Radio 1 the writing team would soon be meeting to start on the project, which would begin filming in 2008 and be ready the same year.

"Hopefully if we can make it work and everybody's excited and watches it we will keep on going," said McCallum.

The series will be set between episodes three and four of the film saga.

It would cover the 20 years in the life of Luke Skywalker growing up that remains a mystery to most film-goers.

McCallum said there would be "a whole bunch of new characters" and the series would be "much more dramatic and darker".

Huge franchise

He added that it was unlikely any of the stars of the movies would be involved in the TV series.

Star Wars creator George Lucas has just completed writing the script for the next Indiana Jones film and will then begin work on Red Tails, about African-American pilots in World War II.

Following completion of that film, work will begin on the Star Wars TV series.

There has already been a Star Wars series spin-off in the shape of the animated Clone Wars, which began as three-minute episodes before they were expanded to 30-minute shows.

Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released in 2005, marked the end of the end of the Star Wars saga on the big screen.

It became the biggest film franchise in history, with the final film alone taking £500m at the box office outside of the US.

My first reaction was, "oh, geez..." I love the movies (refering to the original three, of course), but I fail to see how this series could be interesting at all. First of all, Luke's life up too episode IV was supposed to be boring as all hell, hence his overpowering desire to get off of his home planet. Second... well, I just expect this to be bad.

What do you guys think?

I wholeheartedly agree. Luke's life should be uneventful for the most part. I mean maybe he gets a wedgie at school one day or something, but nothing too exciting. I'm more scared that they're going to have scenes of him using the force before he ever even knows what it is. That would just be pathetic.

I really was hoping they would just go in a totally different direction with the tv show. Like show the early days of the rebellion and the people who founded it and had to fight for their lives. People we don't know much about.

Or even just some of the leftover jedi on the run from Vader. Something that they can't screw up continuity too badly with. Ugh Lucas just sucks these days.

I was very interested in this, but now with it being about Luke? I just don't see that being very good. I was hoping it would be about other new characters and how the rebellion started.

I don't think the show will be about Luke. I think he was mentioned just as a time marker. Everything I've heard so far (including being mentioned in this report) was that the stories wouldn't include characters we already know.

What HAS been a rumor, but is one I don't particularly like, is that it will focus to a certain degree on Boba Fett. I for one have no interest in watching him do his thing. He just doesn't look like a character that can hold a series.

Still, watching the rise of the Empire and the formation of a fledgling Rebellion IS something that can carry a series. There is a LOT of time to cover and is one of the parts of the timeline that really hasn't been fleshed out much. I'm all for a tv series. Hopefully there will be good writers, because Uncle George has shown he sucks at dialogue!

Maybe it'll be like a Wonder Years thing.

Luke commentating on things going on in the universe around him.

Nah. That sounds stupid.

Hope Lucas gets stuff that the actors can SAY. He can write plot well but his dialog sucks! Maybe I'll help him with that someday...LOL

I've heard about this idea for a while now. I think the series may have more of Leia's life in it than Luke's considering that she's more involved with the rebellion later.

And don't forget about old Obi-Wan, learning how to communicate with Qui gon and such. Perhaps with this tv series we can also see Vader turn more down the path that he was in episode 4. I do'nt think the transition was smooth enough. Anakin whined too much to be mistaken for the later known bad a$$ darth Vader.

I was hoping the series would show the Jedi taking on the Sith back before the Sith were seemingly eliminated. Like the Knights of the Old Republic games. I think there's many more story ideas that could come out of a series that takes place in that time.

Yeah, I thought it was going to have to do with some peripheral characters if anything? Just how many times can we watch Luke go into town to pick up some power converters, anyways? ;p

And they're already planning on 100+ episodes???

I think we need to kidnap Lucas, lock him in a box for about a month, and force him to watch nothing but Firefly, Buffy, and Angel ;p Maybe if we could convert King Geek, we could get some backing on 100+ eps of a much better tv series (ahem... Firefly :)

Seriously, though. So long as it isn't Skywalker: the Wonder Years, it could be good. (And so long as Lucas has as little to do with it as possible. He's done his part, and now it's time to let go... :)

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for more of Leia's life. She's in the middle of everything but Luke is out in the middle of nowhere doing nothing.
I also like the idea of hunting down the remaining Jedi. I don't care what anyone else says, there's no way every Jedi was killed in that one day. Just most of them. There have to be some who escaped that. Or some who've retreated from the order for one reason or another, they're not technically Jedi but they are still a threat to the Emperor.

Tell you what though, Lucas is really going to have to work hard to reagain my enthusiasm for anything in the Star Wars universe that he, personally, is involved in.
We know he can do better that his recent efforts, we have the originals to prove it. I sincerely hope he rises to the challenge.

Yeah, I was hoping for me Leia, too. As you said, she is involved with everything. Also, she's the better character, imo.

Though maybe a series about her dad would be more interesting, as he was very, very involed with the creation of the rebellion. Plus, now that West Wing is ending, Jimmy Smitz (sp) has nothing to do, so he'd be played by the same actor who played him in the series, which I guess it cool. Actually, maybe not. I can never decide if I like Jimmy Smitz.

I too, would have no interest at all in 100+ episodes of pre-force, whiny luke pining for adventure and tinkering with moisture farming equipment.
Seeing the early rebellion would be pretty damn cool but I have one problem, and in revealing this I unviel just how much of a geek I am. In the prologue (scrolling words) of episode IV I'm pretty sure it says that when the rebels steal the death star plans that its their first victory against the empire. FIRST victory. I'm all for making it dark but don't know if I'd be able to sit through 100+ episodes before the good guys score a single point.

This article is misleading. Lucas and McCallum have said several times that the series would not feature any of the main characters from the films, but may include some of the smaller supporting characters, mentioning bounty hunters specifically (which has led many to the Boba Fett conclusion).

This article is also wrong about the timeframe (for one, it was 3 years between 4&5, not 20 years). Everywhere else has stated that the series would be set between episodes 3&4, leaning closer to the ep. 4 timeframe.

I can see them going with Boba Fett as a central character That would allow them to explore a differnt aspect of the SW universe, the dark criminal underbelly, as the Empire solidifies it's hold. It would also let them touch on other aspects pretty easily. The Rebel alliance would likely have no choice but to have some ties to the underworld, while the Empire may emply bounty hunters in order to track them down. Bounty Hunters may also be employed to seek out surviving Jedi. And given that Fett has turned into one of the most popular characters in the franchise, with relatively little screen time, I can see them going this way very easily.

Follows the events right after episode III. Anakin getting used to being Darth, Obi-wan stalking the Skywalkers from afar, surviving Jedi trying to figure out what to do...other good stuff like that.

Good filler for in-between III and IV, definitely enough storylines and time for plenty of shows.

What concerns me is Lucas's total disregard for everything that's been written in the books/comics since he took his little twenty year vacation "to do small independent films nobody would see."

Given the craptacularity of the prequels, I will always take the novels over Lucas's word. On the other hand, that contradicts the canon system. I swear to God, SW has a code for what is more "real" than the rest of the fiction. The funniest bit is G-Level canon (yes, they do capitalize it) which basically says that anything Lucas scrawls on a napkin in a drunken stupor becomes Star Wars gospel.

Sigh. Have I mentioned recently how glad I am to be a member of a SANE fandom?

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

Sounds like Star Wars Smallville...

I don't think it will strictly focus on Luke, but will follow many plot lines (luke, rebellion, han/chewie, ect.)

STEGASAURUS

I'm wondering if the storyline will include Mala, Itchy and Lumpy.

For those who do not know these names, refer to the first made-for-TV Star Wars abortion that Lucas came up with.

If you can find it, you rock! Cause there's very few decent quality (film wise) copies floating around the cortex and Lucas had the originals destroyed.

You can enjoy over an hours worth of Wookie-speak (with no subtitles or interpreters) and you can see where Boba Fett was first introduced! Also, for you Leia fans out there, you can watch/listen to her sing a wonderful song to the music of the Title Theme of Star Wars.

I get the feeling, no matter how hard they try, what they come up has GOT to be better than what was put out before. But still never a comparison to our 'verse!

Er... hard as this may be to believe for some... there are plenty of Star Wars fans around. Even ones who like the prequels. Though this obviosly won't appeal to everyone (nothing can), there is most certainly an audience for it.

Well knowing lucas, the show will prolly run for 2-3 seasons, then he'll get a crazy idea to redo the seasons and add some more special effects, and maybe a dewback or 2 here in the background, rerelease the seasons as Star Wars the Series: Special Edition! and those episodes will cover the 100 eps they plan on making.

CYBERSNARK

Oh God, the Luke mention made me think of Star Wars: Smallville too.

[ASIDE]
I hate Smallville. I'm sure it's well-written and well-acted, and the effects look good, but it's just way too "fannish" --everything screams "hey, look how many references we can put in to the comics!" instead of actually exploring the theme of Clark's growth. It's not about Clark Kent, it's about the teenaged Superman (full range of powers, exploring his Kryptonian heritage, meeting Lois, seeing his futre all mapped out in excruciating detail).

Also, it completely guts Lex Luthor, turning him from one of the greatest villains in pop culture to a stereotypical spoiled brat.
[/ASIDE]

Now I have visions of teen Luke with a lightsaber, uncovering ominous Imperial Plots(tm), meeting teenaged equivalents to every other character in the EU (Look: it's Mara Jade! And Talon Karrde! And Wedge Antilles! And here's Han and Chewie, but they slip out of the scene so fast that they won't remember Luke! . . .)

And I'll third the cheers for the novels. On his best day, Lucas couldn't approach that level of quality.

Again, the article is misleading. It WILL NOT be about Luke. Notice that none of the actual quotes refrence Luke, that's the writer jumping to conclusions.

Google around for other articles pertaining to the series (there are lots), and you'll see that they've said several times it's not going to feature any of the main characters.

ZOID

Fellow 'coats and Lucas emotional-rape victims:

First: The way back from the internal hell you are all enduring is to stop identifying with your attacker. Realize that you did not deserve the brutalization he inflicted upon you. Also, your parents wanted to have you, and love you very much...

Second: With all due respect, y'all are going about this entirely the wrong way. Wanna know what the series is going to be about? Put yourself in George's shoes. What characters and storylines will yield the most fruit on the money tree? As in: licensed collectibles, board and video games, lunch boxes, stuffed toys, ad infinitum...

I suspect that whatever characters, stories and dialogue may exist in the series, these will clearly hold a back seat to the merchandising opportunity the series represents. So, I expect: 1.) Lots of new vehicles; 2.) Several new alien species; 3.) New handheld weapons; et cetera. I'm sure I'm leaving out a plethora of other viable tie-ins, but I've never fooled myself into believing that I'm as diabolical as GL. If he injection-molds it, they will come. "Oh... people will come, (George). People will most definitely come." (NB: How spooky is it that the voice of the real Darth Vader delivered that 're-purposed' line from "Field of Dreams"?)

As to the aforementioned 'characters, stories and dialogue', how long has it been since Lucas gave a rat's a$$ about any of that, anyway? 25 years? 30? If you're honestly expecting any of those lofty elements in a Lucas project, you have my deepest sympathies.

Oracularly,

zoid
