Let's let our hair down, admit we love cool spaceships & have some fun with this one. Are you game?

What's your favourite ship(s) & why?

1 Millenium Falcon-(Star Wars) Who hasn't imagined owning one? after all it could make the Kessle run in less than 12 parsects. How cool is that?
2. X wing fighter (Star Wars) - The Tomcat of the stars, Lock "s-foils" in attack position, nuff said.
3. The last starfighter "Guntstar" the Swiss Army Knife of the stars. Supercool ship, excellent name and whoever thought of a weapon called "death blossom" was a genius. Would have whooped an x-wings ass.
4. Victory class Imperial Star Destroyer. (Star Wars)Totally awsome ship, but a high staff turnover in senior managment.
5. Battlestar Galactica: the latest edition is an excellent interpretation and better than the original in my opinion. I always wanted to see this ship arrive at earth and sort us all out. Anyhow, the Cylons wouldn't last 2 seconds in Iraq.
6. Police car from Blade Runner. Not a spaceship per se' but imagine turning up to a party in one of these. It has the best dashboard I have seen in any scifi film and is real intimidating.
7. In at number 7 is our beloved Serenity. It would be number two if this thread were "top 10 spaceships that I would want to take my mates travelling in", but it's not as pretty as the ones listed above.
8. Eagle Transporter Space 1999. I loved the design , in true 2001 stylee, something you could imagine NASA actually building.
9 The Liberator - Blakes 7, Sleek and unique. I have to be serious about this one because I loved Blakes 7. I don't know if anyone from the states knows this one. Big ship with talking computer called Zen.
10. USS Enterprise NCC 1701, there are probably far more worthy ships but no list would have been complete with out old NeCCy. My fave is the re-conditioned model as seen in the motion picture- Introduced us all to Warp speed, phasers and photon torpedoes- love to see some going head to head with the Empire, or bumping into the Battlestar Galactica & giving it to the Cylons big time.

Almost made it.
SKYDIVER- (Gerry Andersons UFO) If Carlsberg made submarines this would be it. Again not a spaceship but a 'U-boat' sized submarine (Diver) with a jet interceptor on the front (Sky). The best working environment on any scifi vehicle, space or otherwise. Female members of the crew had to wear string vests and hot pants in a hot confined space. Man what a great idea.
Nesquik Bunny's Hopcraft (see the links below).
USS Discovery- (2001) Would't have lasted long against a Star Destroyer and not very manouverable. The intro shot from Star Wars with the Star Destroyer owes a lot to this ship.
The Death Star- Space Station the size of a moon with a serious design flaw. When it was first seen in the cinemas no one on the planet had seen anything like it. Named "The Ultimate Force in the Universe" it got blown up by a lone snub fighter with a broken stabiliser being flown by some blindfold farmboy". Death Star 2 was a larger, more powerful replacement, it too was destroyed by a lone snubfigher and a small freighter. Bummer.
The Space Shuttle- Amongst the bravest people in the world climb aboard this glider on a giant firework knowing that there's a high probability that they're not going to see the Earth again. True heroes, keeping the dream real.

I have probably forgotten loads.

Also anyone who is into spaceships you must visit http://www.zemi.net/shipyard/
These guys are taking it to the extreme, looking at their work makes me smile.

P.S Firefly is the best scifi Tv show ever made, ney best tv show period(equal only to Band of Brothers). Bring it back you b######s.

All of the above and also.

1, Dr Who`s Tardis. Bigger inside than outside and changes shape on the outside for camoflage. Only it dosn`t.
2, The Russian Soyuz, developed originally for the Soviet Moon program and currently the most reliable manned spacecraft ever built.
3, The Imperial and Super class Stardestroyers for the same reason as the Victory.
4,The B5 Starfury, the most practical looking fictional starfighter design to date.
5, The Leonov from 2010, if only for the Jupiter aerobreaking scene.
6. the C57D from Forbidden Panet, classic 1950`s flying saucer.

I can't remember the name of the ship at the moment, but there was an episode of Star Trek Voyager where the Doctor was somehow sent to the Alpha Quadrant and met an alternate version of himself. The ship they had in the episode was nice. Split 3 ways instead of 2 like the Enterprise. If anybody remembers the name of that ship it'd be great.

That ship was the Prometheus and hell yea did it kick ass. 4 warp engines! I bought a game a few years back called Starship Creator I think. You get to build your own star trek type ship and the Prometheus class was on there(don't think this is a recomendation for that game, it sucked after you built the ship).
Also, surprised noone mentioned the Defiant. That little ship rocked. Clocking device, four forward quantum torpedoe bays. That ship would definitely make my top ten.

CYBERSNARK

The Andromeda Ascendant. A fully-sapient AI, enough firepower to defoliate a planet, nova bombs, point-defense turrets, and a whole passel of fighters, fighter drones, and sensor drones, any one of which can be remote-controlled by the AI. Everything it needs is produced by onboard factories (raw materials come from asteroids which the ship can "eat"). It also includes the Twins, a pair of Battletech rejects that can be deployed for ground ops, as well as an army of robots, DRD-style maintenance droids, full holographic systems, and one Ship-Made-Flesh android, all of them controlled by (or partitioned subunits of) the AI.

Also, she's beautiful. Built by angels. Well, Vedrans. Same diff.

I'm almost through with the first season, and though the guy I'm watching it with also thinks its annoying and I did at first...I really got used to it after the end of the episode "You Can't go Home again" (its a two parter, don't want to give anymore away if you haven't seen it b/c it was great).

I understand though, I'm not exactly using it in my everyday vocabulary, but it seemed appropriate amongst us geeks.

Back to the best scifi ships, what about The Outrider from Shadows of the Empire? I think it should be right up there with the Falcon and I'm not sure whose cooler, Rendar or Solo.

SINGATE

One of the ship's I really like is from a Star Wars book. Not a film adaptation but a great story nonetheless. The ship is called the Sun Crusher. It's a small nearly indestructible vessel which fires resonance torpedos capable of causing a star to go supernova. Before anyone thinks this is a ripoff of Andromeda, the story was published in 1994.

In the book a young Jedi named Kyp goes all darkside and destroys several Imperial controlled solar systems to exact revenge on them for harming his family. Good stuff!

You know what I think it is? It seems out of place. The way they talk seems completely normal, and then they throw a "frack" in there. In Firefly they have a very different way of speaking, so when they throw in a "gorramn" or a "shiny" or some chinese, it sounds natural.

Vic-Class SD!? C'mon...
See, I get too specific, I have to break it down into capital ships, star-fighters, transports...so here's a composite. They also just simply come from my fav films.

Okay, mine:

10. Eagle 5 - Its a flying Winnebago...how wierd is that?
9. Nostromo - From Alien
8. The Heart of Gold - Infinate Probability Drive anyone?
7. Discovery - from 2001 (just was a kickin' set too)
6. Can't remmebr the name right now...
5. TIE Avenger - Just my fav starfighter from the card game. Pretty much an interceptor, now with a hyperdrive.
4. USS Enterprise
3. Millenium Falcon
2. Executor - Command ship of the Empire...duh...
1. Serenity - Hey, its grown on me and the crew that comes with it. I want to part of that family.

I started to type up my list and realized it was just too ruttin' esoteric. Apparently I live in my own verse for ships, because other than the Cygnus and the T.A.R.D.I.S. no one would recognize them. Well, maybe the SIDRAT, but how many people have heard of the Terra IV, the HMS Space Beagle or the Marathon?

And speaking of the Marathon, it beat the Infinite Improbability Drive by about 40 years and equalled it on oddness. Basically, since all distances are relative no exact distances can be proven to exist, therefore no distance truly does exist. And you're at your destination instantly. Throw in the chess playing, parallel processing martians and you've got a winner.

OK, specially for Lancer.

The largest gun ever built had an operational career of 13 days, during which a total of 48 shells were fired in anger. It took 25 trainloads of equipment, 2000 men and up to six weeks to assemble.

She was called "Dora" and she was probably Krupp's favourite gun...

It weighed 1344 tons with a bore diameter of 800mm (31.5") and served by a 500-man crew commanded by a major general.

Two types of projectiles were fired using a 300-lb. charge of smokeless powder: a 10,584 lb. High explosive (HE) shell and a 16,540-lb. concrete-piercing projectile. Craters from the HE shells measured 30-ft wide and 30-ft deep while the concrete piercing projectile proved capable of penetrating 264-ft of reinforced concrete before exploding.

Maximum range was 29 miles with HE shells and 23 miles with concrete piercing projectiles. Muzzle velocity was approximately 2700 f.p.s.
