Kinda twitchy posting...
I thought it might be interesting to see what you folks do for a livin'. What types make up brown coats. Are we a motley crew- or more -unified?
I am proud to call myself a homemaker ~like Jaynes Mom maybe? My husband and fellow brown coat is in the printing industry. He works in "pre-press" and is what as known as (no joking) a stripper. He sometimes introduces himself as a male stripper...depending on whose asking

I am an oceanographer and a programmer of spacecraft software in DC. For reasons involving life in the nation's capital after 9/11, I will not say where I work or who work for (google is always watching). In my spare time, I am writing a SF novel which is being digitally illustrated by my brother in CA. (A lengthy preview of the story can be seen at my website www.cyberdrome.org if anyone is interested)

I'm in Credit and Collections. I deny people credit so that they can go over my head to my boss and get approved, then I get to chase them for the money that I originally didn't want to be owed. When the chase becomes tiresome, I send them a "nasty-gram" in the form of a demand letter and coordinate the repossesion of their equipment.

That's a pretty accurate description of what I do. Maybe I'll put that on my resume'.

CHANNAIN

i DO aim to misbehave

I'm a girl Friday at a Covenant church. The job title is Administrative Assistant-Technology, but that's pretty high-falootin for a glorified Receptionist. I do manage the church's web site and relational database, but basically I'm there to answer phones, control the calendar and process the Sunday bulletin while fielding last-minute urgent requests from two guys who wouldn't know what "lead time" was if it jumped up and licked them on the nose.

On the upside, I don't work Mondays or Wednesday afternoons which allows much creative time. The goal is to get into position to make a living as an artist, but that's a slow-going process.

I do tech support for Bubbas & Rednecks.

(I use those terms with love & endearment.)

Let me clarify: I work for Lowrance Electronics. We make fishing sonars & GPS devices. We cater to two main markets Your standard weekend angler, and you pro tournament fisherman, like the guys you see on ESPN. Anyway, when either one has problems using their electronics they call us. I talk to folk from all sides of the spectrum. Some have a clue, others not so much. All in all it makes for an interesting to do. And I have to say, even though I don't fish or hunt , I really do like my job. Not to mention I have this website up most all day to help when things slow down.

Ok now ya got me to thinking.

So we take off into the verse.

a homemaker & her hubby the printing guy (sound like mighty fine folk to me.)

an oceanographer & programmer (might as well say scientist or genius) perhaps evil or at least ill tempered since he's a good guy?

a collections agent (sounds like a Mercenary to me)

a very good organizer, artist, and all around nice person..hmmmm.....ambassador.

tech support (who pales in comparison to that guy up there)- so hey I guess I'd be ye olde comic relief.

Gee, now all we need is a theme song and a plot.

Stillshiny,
Since I wear Hawaiian shirts and shorts in the summers here, can I trade in my scientist title to be the pilot? I used to write flight simulator code so I am a pretty good arm-chair pilot. Please, please, please? Do I have to virtual-arm-wrestle someone else for the job?

Oh, and thanks for the very nice words regarding my online story. It keeps me busy and out of trouble these days. Hoping to publish next year sometime...

Javidrho, I'd say pilot you are. (I'd arm wrestle ya, but last I checked that required effort)Though if we land, folk might think the hawaiian shirt was our "uniform" I have quite the shiny collection of said shirts myself. To provide diversity I could just wear a succession of rock band t-shirts.

Hope we're not hijacking the thread. Of course these things rarely end up as what they start. Nevertheless, we need some other folk to post so we can build our crew.

I have four jobs, it was just pointed out to me. No wonder I'm so tired.

My day job is as CEO of an aircraft design company for esoteric extremely high altitude high speed aircraft. See http://www.rocketplane.com.

My occasional gig is as a Major in the USAF Reserve. I am an instructor at the USAF Test Pilot School (from where I graduated in 1988).

I'm also starting a new business which I can't talk about much yet but it'll be really cool and has nothing whatsoever to do with flying machines.

I drive a cab - in detroit, no less.. fun fun fun.

As a consequence on not wanting to sell my soul to any specific company, I outright own and posess all necessary permits and licenses in my own name, thus allowing me to work for any company, any day, any time (I do percentage, never lease.)

Guess that'd make me the cabbie version of a merc, since with a few exceptions, I take the highest bidder when more than one of em has an empty cab.

Also happen to be a right handy small engine/appliance mechanic when I ain't pushin a cab.

what a cool thread! :-)

what do i do? good question. i just graduated from nyu with an individualized degree. i studies mythology and dramatic writing... so what do i do?

well, i was working as an assistant to my old dramatic writing professor but no more (as of like yesterday) 'cause he can't afford to pay me anymore. sad.

i work as an office assistant at the nyc fire museum though maybe not for more much longer because i need more pay 'cause i oh, so desperately want to move out of my parents' house.

but i'm a writer. that's the plan anyway. i'm working on a project right now with a friend that's very exciting. who knows? maybe one day you'll be looking at a poster for the next great musical and in really little letters it'll say "book by emily paul." i'm too young to be skeptical yet :-)
