Am I missing something about when our BDHs were flying back towards Mr Universe through Reaver Space?

Mal is sat on top of Serenity with the big gorram gun. He fires at a passing Reaver ship to get them all riled up, then the ship speeds off while the Reavers follow. How did Mal get back inside Serenity while she was moving so fast?

There's no wind resistance to knock him off and as long as the ship isn't accelerating, even if he got up and wasn't in contact with Serenity he will still be moving at the same relative speed as the ship.

Moreover we know from the series they seem to have magnetic boots on the EVA Suits (a sensible precaution).

Ah yes. I had thought about the lack of resistance, but the ship is definitely accelerating as it speeds off. Magnetic boots do indeed seem to account for him not flying off into space, but I'm not sure how easily Mal would have been able to manoeuveur if the ship was accelerating. Then again I probably don't know nearly enough about space travel to be discussing that.

All they have to do is cut acceleration for a few seconds so he can get back in the top airlock (lets face it he'd be well motivated). Serenity would likely be able to get up a decent lead on the Reavers (based on the relative size of her engines compared with her mass) so cutting the engines for a short period shouldn't be a big problem.

Since there's no grativty out there there would be no feeling of acceleration. He wouldn't feel it at all, at least that's what by brother in law told me. He's an air force test pilot so he's pretty smart when it comes to that stuff. However, I am a much better dresser.

Long story short, Mal wouldn't have felt a thing.

Gravity and Inertia are not related in that way. You still feel the effects of acceleration regardless of whether or not you're within a gravitation field.

I think, though, that once the acceleration is done (cause there's bound to be a limit to the velocity), there'd be nowhere near as much inertia. you're both going. there's no resistance, because velocity is met, acceleration is zero. if anything, inertia is now your friend. motion stays in motion. a simple guidewire and magnetic boots calls it a day.

It's a bit more complicated than simple Newtonian physics would imply, too. According to the Role Playing Game (admittedly not yet verified as cannonical) Serenity's Hard Burn drive works on a kind of reduced-inertia system that is tied in with the ship's gravity drive.

Presumably the drive field extends for at least a short distance around the hull, so even if the ship was accelerating at a hundred G's, Mal wouldn't feel the G-force. Magnetic boots might be deliberately coupled though the G-compensation field to improve on the effect.

Man, we're coming seriously close to Treknobabble here. Where's Kaylee when you need her?

That's true. Also, we don't know how far it was from Miranda to Mr. Universe's world, so Mal could have had time to liesurely get down, take off the space suit, take a shower, get some coffee, and still be on the bridge for their big battle scene.

WISHUPONAWASH

For Serenity (and her crew) to survive the massive amount acceleration that would be produced by the Firefly drive (big shiny glowy end bit) she would need somekind of inertia dampening field to reduce the effects of the inertia. I would be reasonable to expect that to extend to out of the ship sides and to the ships surface.
