MINIME

'mini' is the second half of my actual first name. Around the time the Austin Powers movies came out, a Uni friend started calling me 'minime' (I'm also... diminutive in size - that is to say, short); it stuck.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

I believe this has been done before, but who cares?

So my name goes back a few years

When I wanted to sign up to Delphi Forums I tried a bunch of names and every single one was taken. I didn't want to just use my name cos... well it was a bit dull, but I was getting desperate

In the end, I said to my brother that I bet no matter how obscure the name, it wouldn't let me have it.

So I typed in NeedSalt (A reference to First Wave, where the aliens involved had a weakness for salt and so could be used in interrogations and the like) and you know what? It worked.

Only then did I realise that I was stuck with it.

But then people started to call me Needy and I thought, "hey, it's not so bad... as long as they're not referring to being desperate"

So pretty much everywhere I go on the net, I'm either Needy or Needsalt. It keeps things simple

How ironic it was though that when we were asked to create a crew as part of the official site's tasks, that I became our ship's Male companion

Companion... by the name of Needy?

Surely not a coincidence

Mine started because I used to play a Game called Giants at Uni (only as research into computer simulations, you understand) in which was a character named Citizen Kabuto.

I then Started playing Counter Strike where my name changed to Citizen Suicide, because of my tactics that involved running at the opposing side with a knife.

And then getting shot.

At some point which I'm not particularly sure of it changed to Citizen Pain (probably around the time I actually got good...) partially as a nod to my abillities to inflict pain on my opponents (god that I was...) and partly as a fairly transparent nod to Citizen Kane.

I've gradually dropped the pain part (though it still follows me to this day to some degree), but that's the story of my name.

What's yours?

DESKTOPHIPPIE

Mine's actually a name I've used in my work. I teach computers, and specialise in teaching absolute beginners - as in people who wave the mouse around and wonder why it doesn't work.

So when I set up an e-mail address they could contact me at I used the name Desktop Hippie. Because I promote peace and harmony with your computer. Man.

Also, back when I had an office job I was known as the office hippie. I got teased a lot for my new-age outlook. I used to play up to it sometimes too, mostly to annoy another guy who was a total capitalist. I kept offering to cleanse his aura and things like that (something I don't actually do, but it sounded cool!) It became a running joke. That's when the name Desktop Hippie first came to me.

Well...kinda self-explanatory. I absolutely love Kaylee (I swear we're, like, the same person! ) and the word Shiny. Dunno why I decided on the Forever bit. Some friends like to say its because I'm always so gorram perky all the time (again, just like Kaylee. lol) and it annoys the heck outta them.

Mine's pretty straightforward. Came here as a devoted Jayne-enthusiast, so when signing on I just twisted 'Hero of Canton' and femmed it up some.

Most folks on the boards usually shorten it to CH. Makes me feel all kinds of accepted since I never had a nickname before.

COSMICFUGITIVE

I wanted to come up with a unique username, and thought of everything related to Firefly.

Although, I wanted it to be subtle. 'Cosmic' was the first word that came to mind. 'Fugitive' came a long while later, shortly after the embarrassing 'cropduster', which didn't quite work or fit in with the show. I'm so glad that I found a better word.

My screen name refers to my favourite character: River. Although, it can apply to Simon too. I love their relationship on the show.

In the past, my username has been linked to John Crichton from Farscape - which hadn't occured to me at first, although I don't mind, because it's another cool show.

Mine is pretty self-explanatory. I guess this is still not known to some folks, so don't read below if you haven't seen the BDM!

I was tired and a little hungover, and all the screen names I tried before were taken, so I got irritated and started typing random, Firefly-related things in and came up with reaverman. GIRLASKEW

Okay, back in the day, ten years ago or so, I was a big fan of Kevin Smith. His company is called View Askew. I am a girl, and was a big fan, hence Girlaskew. At this point it's just sloth. All of my e-mail addys are Girlaskew, any other site I'm registered on I am Girlaskew. It's easier then having to remember who I am where. Besides, I have never found it to be taken.
My old AOL was BluegreenDreams, no story there, just liked the sound of it. However for AIM I had to be Blugrndrms. Lost it's appeal.

Zoid, I promise from now on I will hear your name correctly when I read it. I had wondered...

SINGATE

I have never bothered to explain my screen name to anyone. Point in fact, no one ever asked. I guess Browncoats are a swell enough bunch that I can let you all in on it.

A few years ago I was trying to register at a games site. Like others have expressed it is an impossibility to find a name that hasn't been taken. The prospect of using something with a bunch of numbers tacked on is not very appealing so I decided to get a little creative.

A concept I have always been fascinated with is the thin line which separates genius and insanity. I took the two words and started playing around with canceling common letters then seeing what was left. Common to both words: I N S. What's left: A T G E U Y. The first intelligible word I could come up with was singate. A name is born!

Plus I'd heard Mal call her little Kaylee in an episode and I wanted a name to relate to Firefly. And 29 is my age, I added that because I didn't know how many lil_Kaylee's was out there. I honestly have no explanation for my name. Seriously, I got very tired of my old name ("Necralis" for the curious...I realised it made me sound like one of those annoyingly pretentious vampires. This is why I love Buffy, see, the vampires wear terrible shirts), and I was messing around with word combinations. I like the word "Moose", I like the meaning behind "Nano" and it stuck. Kepler = astronomist and astrologist, german, lived 1571-1630, bit of a genius (I'm none of the above!), came up with 3 laws of planetary motion and investigated the idea that the velocities of planetary orbits could be related to musical-harmonic intervals.

Hey, NanoMoose. Have you ever read or watched anything by Jhonen Vasquez? He has several comics, The best know of which is called Johnny the Homocidal Maniac. Also I know what you're saying. Between myself and my two brothers, we own about everything Jhonen has ever done. All three volumes of Zim on DVD, all of JTHM, I Feel Sick, Squee, all the Filler Bunnies, and even the Bad Art Collection. Why we have that last one, I don't know. We may be off topic but I, at least, am having fun. Besides, we're not the first ones to wonder off topic on a thread around here, I've seen several get hijacked by Malcaholics. Not on purpose you understand. It just kind of happens sometimes.

And I'm sorry about your shared fandom dilema. I, met several great Jhonen fans in general and Zim fans in particular. I hope you can find some more. And for the record, I would like a GIR plushie. I don't care which form. And did you know that they have pig and mini-moose plushies?

This is probably kind of confusing for anyone who's never heard of Zim huh.

Anyway, so as not to be rude to the folks who come to this thread to ttalk about screen names, perhaps we should continue this discusion elsewhere. We could start a new thread. Maybe there are some other Zim fans about.

It's shiny, off-topicness is a part of forum life.

Anyway, it's such a pity Jhonen said he would never work on it again. I look at Zim and then I look at Firefly and I marvel at the differences between the fanbases. The Zim fans always claim that one day it'll get back on the air, but the Browncoats are actually trying to live up to their claims. The Zim fandom community is...well. A little on the young side, really. But the love and devotion and determination in the Browncoat community is almost palpable. I love it so much.

Yeah, I think we should. Start a new thread? Find a few other Zim/Firefly fans? Sounds good to me.
