In FF, Nathan parted his hair on the left-ish side, and in Serenity, it was parted mostly to the right.
What does it mean?
Does it indicate a change in Nathan's political beliefs?
Did Joss tell him to do it?
Was it the result of a lost bet with Morena?

We must find out the answer to this!

Hmmm, maybe a result of the change in hairstylists?

Of course, that's what the grand conspirasists would have us believe. Hah!

If you had posted that in the "Real World Event Discussions" forum there would be a load of political banter by now

My advice: Tell no one. The truth is out there (on Nathans head, actually).

And I was afraid you were gonna discuss his change in suspenders from traditional leather to space-age rubberband-y material... Whew! I haven't put the finishing touches on my 50-page manifesto on the implications of that change, so I'm not quite ready to discuss it yet.

Sure am glad nobody noticed that!

Erm... Please disregard this post.

Compulsively,

zoid

P.S.
As to the change in the parting of his hair: Good catch! I'm sure it just symbolically represents the change from his happy-go-lucky, Captain-about-town character we all saw in Firefly, to the darker, more malevolent misfit who would tie a kid's dead body to the front of his ship as a hood ornament. Either that or Nat woke up one morning before shooting with such a bad case of 'pillow hair' that the hair-and-makeup folks were forced to go the other way...

P.P.S.
RE: My nascent manifesto. That would be 'braces' for the Britishly-inclined. If Nathan wears 'suspenders', he's keeping it on the 'down low', and we thank him for that.

As much as I dislike Freud (I'm not even sure I just spelled his name correctly) he did have one thing right. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I changed my hair in middle school, and when people asked me why, well, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.

Chrisisall, it was disappointing that they didn't make Mal's pants tighter in the movie, but Simon's pants were MUCH tighter...so I guess that helped make up for it.

Anyway I agree w/Zoid on the geo-political implications of switching from leather suspenders. It is almost as though 'evil movie Mal' had gotten a good deal through Blue Sun (!)

If and when we get the sequel (or maybe in the next set of comic books) we'll have a chance to learn more about these subtle clues that the Joss has ingeniusly hidden within 'Serenity'....

Mal's Firefly hair made me want to run barefoot through it.
Mal's Serenity hair often looked as if I already had -- with dirty feet.
Blech. I'd *never* do that.

Didn't like the rubbery stuff anywhere on anyone. Even the sacred Browncoat was sullied with a patch of it.

Leave us not forget Chris, Nathan is Canadian and if he was like most Western Canadians he tried to get that bloated corpse of a Liberal Government out and a fresh new Conservative party in, so as the show was made when the Liberal party was raping... I mean ruling the governing body it was left. And the movie came out when the new Conservatives came in with their minority party it's now right.... so maybe, you could be right.

Interesting thoughtisall.

Kinda makes him look like Pinnochio, dunnit?

Maybe that's his character's heretofore unsuspected mystery: He's a 'bot. If they'd pulled the harpoon from his chest, they'd've found wiring and such. In the sequel, Mal and crew will pick up a newer O-3 model (without the extenders) from Washburne Cybernetics; though Zoe will be disappointed in its performance compared to the previous model (due to the lack of aforementioned extenders). This also explains why Wash refused to let Zoe have a child: Because he couldn't give her one. (NB: Again, for the British-ly inclined, he could and frequently did 'give her one'; I'm speaking 'of children' here.)

So the lederhosen look symbolizes Wash's desire -- reminiscent of the other Pinnochio of science fiction TV fame, Data -- to be a real boy.

Not Really,

When Mal is talking to Inara at the end of Serenity, I think his hair is parted in the
middle. Just as Inara's hair is parted in
the middle.

You know where she says I don't know and he says good answer.

Inara around...Mal funnier/nicer...hair parted one way.

Inara around...Mal not nicer...hair parted another
way.

Also, the Tightpants were from the War. How many
pairs do you think Mal had? He probably finally split
the last pair he had and had to get new ones. And with Inara not around, why would he
get new pants that were tight???

Please note that "Seriously" is, in fact, an adverb.

And to be accurate, the event calendar should read:
"April 2nd, zoid seriously adverb-less. Check water supply for metals and other toxins. (Follow with a three page thesis on the health benefits of purified water, drawing parallels to Shepherd Book's culinary expertise, and the emotionally cleansing effect of FFFn. Use lots of commas, semicolons and colons (i.e., 'run-on sentences') and especially ellipses (i.e., 'What the hell is he driving at?')...)".

Ideally, the entry for April 2nd would thus be so long that it would spill into at least the May calendar, and the April calendar itself would take the better part of the month to download on dial-up. After all, April is the cruelest month...

I watched the show before I found this place and I have to say that I never noticed that Mal's pants were tight, though I have heard a lot about it here or there on this site. I've never been very observant, but I think I'll attribute this to that I'm a guy who favors the women-folk. When I watched it again I had to laugh a bit. Captain tightpants indeed. Don't know how you do it for the ladies Mal. I gotta let my boys breathe and all I do at work all day is sit in front of this computer.

Never noticed the suspenders or the hair thing either.... man was that a good catch. I wouldn't have noticed either of them if I watched it 100 times. I haven't even watched Firefly through twice yet, but I reckon I'll be watching it a lot in the future. I think it's good for a change though. I for one am a big fan of wearing different clothes, sometimes even on a daily basis.

Oh! It's better'n when JR's little brother, Bobby, stepped out of the shower and a whole series of Dallas had just been a really, really bad dream!! !

That's a dream that's gone down in history - even with those of us who missed it the first time around because it was past our bedtime!

Zoe wakes up and Wash walks out of the shower? Hmmm... now ~there's~ an idea .... *phones Joss*
