What do you browncoats do for a living out there in the real world and would your jobs be safe in the Firefly verse? In the train job Adeline's (sic)henchman told Mal to keep the money and to use it to buy a funeral so I guess I'll still be bringing in a wage.

I'm an author. (No, really)...I write Paranormal Suspense-Thriller novels. Oddly enough, also in St. Louis.

As to my job being safe in the 'verse...Well, given that such prose would be an unaffordable luxury except in the core, I'd probably find myself working for Blue Sun writing jingles...However, I do have an IT background and was a field service engineer for 20 years. I suppose that could be of some use aboard a 'Fly.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I'm a marketing director so I guess it would mean I would have to work for Blue Sun or the makers of Fruity Oaty Bars.

I'm a medical transcriptionist, and since my job is already on its way to being obsolete, in another 500 years nobody would probably dream of typing medical records. So no, no 'Verse job for me.

I think I'd rather be a farmer on an outer planet anyway. Or maybe a veterinarian.

Well in the real world I'm a Technical Director for a University Theatre Dept and oftime actor. Basically, I manage resources in the dept. to make sure that the sets get built correctly and on time. So in the 'verse I could still work in entertainment or stand around ordering people to build stuff, hehe.

It just occured to me that Mal is a sci-fi version of a truck driver... Well, okay. I'm just saying that to feel better about my job.

I'm going to school for video game design. Does that mean I might put myself out of work?

I work in a shop, so based on that, i'd either still work in a shop, or, lets face it, I have no skills so I'd probably just be a whore.

Sadly my parents comparable jobs wouldn't have been enough to get me into the Training House so I'd be just plain old whore.

Thank fully I trained as a dress maker, so saving myself from a life of involunary vice, I'd be living in semi-poverty on one of the core planets making clothes for stuffy over-allowenced Shindig types.

I'd like to think in situation A I'd be the strong, pro-active, Nandi type.

In situation B i'd just 'loose' the odd pin (or five) on a frequent basis. Then get sick of it all and run away, learn to do something useful like cook or clean or shoot people and, if not escape the poverty, then atleast escape the stuffy people.

I sell books.
Seeing as we've seen books in the Verse, I assume someone must still PRINT books, and therefore someone must still SELL books.
But I'd probably actually work for the Alliance Post Office- better benefits, when rogue officers aren't threatening to light you on fire...

NUCLEARDAY

Currently I manage the night shift at the local grocery store. Likely all that's done by robots out in the Core, but I'm sure there'd be a job for me in Rim. I 'spose there might be some element of danger in the Rim, getting held up or something. (But I've got a little policy about none of us playing hero in that unlikely event. $8.50/ hour ain't worth gettin' shot over :)

Lookin' for a new job, though, so who knows. I'd like to get into comics, graphic design, or videogames. I'm sure there'd be some really awesome videogames out in 500 years. (Perhaps in a strange twist of fate, the future me makes a best-selling game wherein you stock groceries :)

Well, I'm an office manager for an engineering firm and since I bet there will still be engineers 500 years from now, I'd also bet that my job would be safe and if not I could be some kind of Alliance/Blue Sun human resources manager. Although I'm not sure how you would classify "Died by exaguinating from every bodily orifice" on a life insurance policy. Any idea? Anyone?

I'm a professor of rhetoric and public address...hey! Wake Up! I'm still talking! See, not too exciting.

Now, in the verse, I don't know if they still need professors for something like that. I wouldn't mind, but if that option isn't available I'd probably be someone's Zoe, at least in Mal's terms, not Wash's. I'm already Zoe to my wife's Wash. I'm organized and good at getting done what needs to get done, no matter what. The only sticker is that I'm not too keen on firearms. So I'd be Zoe for a lot less-interesting Mal.

Huh, no matter how you slice it I'm still boring.

In the 'Verse I'd be a Contracts and Performance Manager for a large government run Hospital... wondering where the pharmaceuticals stocks went.

I boldly walk the frontiers of science!

um, when I'm not furtively working on fanfic.

Edit: I forgot the future part... I guess I'd be sitting in a Core office building looking at plots of squiggly lines while I (secretly)read/write adventure stories about pirates living on the rim.

Except in the Core, I'd probably get my brain melted by guys with blue gloves for being a slacker! LOL!

CYBERSNARK

At the moment, I work with kids who're having trouble in school (imagine a bunch of sugared-up pre-teen Jaynes running around). Since that sad situation looks unlikely to change, my job would be safe (or not, 'cause we're non-profit, and the funding runs out in a month ).

I'm a writer by vocation, though, and I am confident that such skills will always be in demand (if not for books or scripts, then I can do speeches, reports, and even editing).
