There was going to be a cartoon DVD (a la Chronicles of Riddick) set before Serenity and after Firefly which would have been released before the BDM. But it got knocked on the head, and what we got instead was the Serenity comic book series.

I'm sure there are cartoon sketches of the cast somewhere. But I've never been able to find thenm.

It's an idea.

Still, without the original voice-actors, it couldn't/shouldn't be done.
Can you imagine Captain-Generic-Voice playing Mal? It would be awful.
And if we had the cast already assembled, why not just make some new episodes...

Animation would be rad, but you'd have to change the ship/crew if you were to change voice actors.

It just wouldn't be the same.
It might make for an interesting thread though:

Worst voice Actor for Firefly Character X
Just start the list with William Shatner = Mal and work from there.

My smartass answer is, "It would look like Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star..."

My considered answer is, "It worked for Star Trek as an interim step between the cancelled original series and the first movie."

I think the actors would be willing to do the voices considering most of them have done voice work for Justice League.

I wouldn't mind if they looked like the characters in the comics except for Inara - they need a different version of her...

If it's got Firefly in the name, I'd definately watch it :)

I know at least Nathan, Morena, and Gina have/ are doing voice work. But then there is the thought that, yeah... it'd have to have all the cast doing the voices for their own characters (can you picture anyone else but Jewel and Summer voicing Kaylee and River?), and if you have everyone together you might as well just make another season (other than a cartoon being much, much cheaper to make I'd imagine :)

That being said, a win would still be a win. And if we already had our ongoing live-action seasons and a movie trilogy there'd no doubt be plenty of room for a cartoon. (Maybe a good spin-off even?)

Why would there need to be a different version of Inara?

So's Adam (Jackie Chan Adventures, JLU, probably some other stuff).

And there's a good reason why an animated series would be better (in the eyes of studios) than a live-action one: cost.

Animated series tend to have much higher over-the-line effects costs, plus the fact that sets, props, and costumes cost almost nothing.

Of course, being an otaku, I'm in favour of animé (check out Witch Hunter Robin or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex to see that "animé" doesn't necessarily mean "big eyes, small mouths, wacky facial expressions"), but there are a lot of really good (i.e., well-animated, good production values) American (Star Wars: Clone Wars, JLU, The Batman, TMNT) and European (W.I.T.C.H., Code Lyoko) series hitting the airwaves recently.

What about CGI? Something similar to the Final Fantasy movie (the first one) would be cool.

STICK

I think I'll play the devil's advocate here for a moment and say that I don't think it would be near as good. Mainly because Firefly is such a character oriented show, and we had some excelent actors to play those characters which is what made it great. I fully believe that all the characters would do an excellent job voice acting, but saying lines properly is only half of an actors job.

The other half of the acting job would fall on the animators. While I'm sure they would do a good job, I think it would be impossible for them to pick up all the little complexities of character interaction that would be necessary in this show. I'm a big fan of animated shows and all but I think animation is better suited for more action and/or story driven shows. For a show that relies on such complex characters and their interaction. I think alot would be missing and the show just wouldn't have the same feel to it that we all came to love.

Also, I believe somewhere it was mentioned that Joss loves to incorporate little unscripted things that just kind of happened on the set. This would be kinda impossible to incorporate in a setting where the 'actors' would come in days or weeks after their animation was done to 'perform' their lines.

just some food for thought...

BLACKOUTNIGHTS

I actually heard this is in the works right now but they're still signing on people to do the voices. Should be really great with the voice actors being hired.

So far they've got:
• Mr. T for Jayne
• Zsa Zsa Gabor for Inara
• Pat Robertson as Book
• William Shatner as Wash
• and Bobcat Goldthwait as Mal

I've heard Christopher Walken is playing Simon, Arnold Schwartzzenegger is Zoe and Gary Coleman is doing River, but those are unconfirmed.

Because, IMHO, the Inara rendition did NOT look like Moreena Baccharin and it certainly wasn't an improvement. I would prefer something truer to the actress who played her. YMMV

I'll second that, actually :) I only have the TPB, not the individual books, but in the TPB there's a bit where each character has a full-page sketch from a different artist. Thought the one of Inara was particularly off, even though it was technically very nice (just didn't look like her.) Found it a little odd, too. I think Inara's actually one of the easier characters to draw so far, and they had done such a good job on the rest of the crew.
