Goodmorning browncoats,

Let me begin by saying Happy Holiday to each and every one in the Firefly verse.

Now on to the very best violence.

I know the drama and action were part of the Joss/team game plan for FF/Serenity.
Watching the tv pilot the other day had me thinking: Someone is always getting shot,stabed, drugged (& dosed to simulate death) and or injured some kind of way.

How in the heck did they do without a doctor on board the months or years Serenity was in flight with the crew before the Persephone passanger pick up?

I went back and watched the pilot to start a running count of how many times Dr.Simon Tam was needed.I found:

Kaylee shot by the Alliance mole and then Shepherd Book beaten by the same guy.

heres the bloodcount list, pret-near complete I would imagine.Browncoats feel free to add more:

10 gunshot wounds (+Patience shot Mal B4 series,Kaylee shot with darts Serenity)

14 beatings & other medical care (drug induced)

7 stab wounds ( +Jaynes harpooned leg,Wash harpooned in gut, Zoes backslash)

1 electrocution

2 tortures(one with ear extraction...eeewwwww)

1 injury due to explotion

0 falls

0 drownings

and 0 shark attacks so far

I'd say Doc Tams been pretty busy and shouldn't worry about getting a pink slip anytime soon. At least as ships physician.

And this doesn't include every time the doc calms down his sister.Almost every show.

would anyone like to add to the list with the BDM "Serenity" ?

Jayne's bullet wound to the leg
Knife to Mal's shoulder
-Plus random injuries from the fight (bruises & the like)
Anyone think that anyone who went planetside had to be treated for Bowden's?

I think that's it from episode 2. Feel free to correct any omissions.

Who's up for Bushwhacked?

From Bushwacked it's just the Junior Reaver with his bullet wound and the crack to the head.

Shindig. 1 stab wound to the gut.

Safe had Book taking a slug. Of course this episode tells you what they did without Simon along - they took people to the nearest emergency room. Or the nearest emergency room where they don't ask too many questions at least.

Our Mrs. Reynolds.

Mal (and by extension Inara) drugged. Wash beaten senseless.

Jaynestown had only a minor cut to the doctor's oh so pretty face.

Out of Gas. Zoe exploded. Mal shot in the stomach.

Ariel. Jayne gets it in this episode 1 slash to the chest and 2 blunt force trauma wounds to the head.

War stories. Mal and Wash tortured. Jayne gets a gunshot to the shoulder.

Trash. Mal gets his nose bloodied. Jayne gets electrocuted.

The Message. Nobody from the crew gets seriously hurt here though Kaylee did have a fine shirt ruined when Tracy decided to bleed out 2 chest wounds worth of blood on her.

Heart of Gold. Once again our heroes escape mostly unscathed. A lot of whores took lead though.

Objects in Space. Mal and Book beat up. Simon shot.

That's all I can think of at the moment though I've probably forgoten some.

Mal and Zoe are both war veterans. Presumably they picked up the basics of first aid and battlefield patch-ups during their service. We can see in OiS that Zoe isn't comfortable with anything beyond the basics, as Simon has to coach her through the removal of the bullet from his leg. But even basic first aid can be enough to get the victim to the next level of care.

Another factor is that before the pilot, they didn't run into serious life threatening injuries as often. For example, most of the trauma in that episode was due to the presence of River and Simon (and the Fed who was after them). The exceptions were minor: Mal's graze on the arm during the confrontation with Patience, and Zoe's thump on the chest (stopped by body armor, but likely to be a nasty bruise).

And in later episodes, the presence of the fugitives made it harder to get legit jobs and forced them into roundabout routes far from help (viz. OoG).

I don't disagree on any particular point.

We must not forget that prior to the pilot Patience has already shot Mal once.

In Shindig, Mal suffers at least three sword wounds: a cut on the outer right arm below the shoulder, the stabbing on his right side above the waist (the big one he shows Inara later), and one for which the action isn't shown but which bleeds through his shirt and vest in the area of his left shoulder above the clavicle.

Anyone else expect Simon to have to do an amputation after Jayne took the harpoon in his right leg in Serenity?

One must tend the canon with care, lest it get loose and roll around the gun-deck mangling people.

The aformentioned harpoon to Jayne's leg.

Jayne - beaten senseless.

Mal - beaten up pretty bad at the training house.

Simon - blows to the neck and head.

Book - unspecified but bloody.

Wash - also a harpoon victim.

Zoe - slash wound to the back.

Jayne - a bullet to the upper arm IIRC.

Simon - bullet to the gut.

Mal - stabbed again and beaten about fairly fiercly again.

River's wounds are all psychological leaving only Kaylee unscathed.

BDM: I think Inara also went unscathed
(You may scathe me if I'm wrong)
but Kaylee was hit by a few fleches or something.
Would need to pause and look. Later she exhibited a swelly hole or two in her neck, left side.
Mal is shot in the back (or says it, anyway) when the Operative catches up to him in the generator room. Later, the Op's sword goes all the way through him (one stabbing = two scars).

She maybe got a bit bruised in the training house as well I think but otherwise yes unscathed.

Gaah. Knew I was missing something but I couldn't figure out what.

Didn't seem to affect him much more than making him lose his ballance a bit though. Not sure if I'd count it as a wound.

The way I saw it, the "shot in the back" was an energy thing, not a projectile. Maybe something like a very very very mild tazer shot???

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah. It was weird. He wasn't wearing armor, either.
~~~Warning -- possible heresy to follow~~~~
Joss makes a comment later in that fight scene about not dwelling on the fact that Mal's been run through by the Operative's sword, and I *know* deep in my heart that it's because the audience might start laughing. Here's our Big Damn Hero whirling around with a sword stuck right through him, getting the Op down on the floor, pulling the sword out during an exchange about "Do you know what your sin is?" Mal says he'll go with Wrath and tries to plunge the sword into the Op but misses...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~end possible heresy~~~~~~~
If we are counting bloody split lips, we need to include Inara's injury at the hand of Jubal Early in OiS.
That's the way I always interpreted it. The OVC has this to say regarding that however, "A laser shot nails him in the lower back...." So maybe it is more painfull than Mal is showing.
Well I was kind of avoiding the minor scrapes, hell I can't even remember all of the major injuries, but sure count it.
dave, we could probably include Inara's lip in the same category as bloody noses.
As for the shot to Mal's back, I have the OVC and completely missed that.
Now I'm wondering if it's another thing we are not dwelling upon.
Heh.
goodmorning all,
the bloodlist has been updated. I've left out the band-aid injuries, don't think theres a box of bandaids on Serenity anyway.
I want to add an investment tip here:
Mal lets it slip during the pilot eps while he and Jayne where discussing how cheery Kaylee is.
"Duck Tape" Mal replies to Jayne that ducktape is what they could use to put on Kaylees mouth to keep all that cheeriness inside about picking up new passengers.So there you are fellow browncoats "Duck Tape". Its the tape of the future and perfect for taping the mouths of Alliance moles too.
we can now all be rich
Good grief, people, we've omitted a prime gross-out from the series, even though I don't include it as a necessary high-visibility scar in the "Mal's body" canon.
SEVERED EAR!!!
(War Stories, in case anyone was able to forget)
Also, from WS, I'd think Niska's "pet" should have left a visible mark over the Captain's sternum.
Edit to add: We saw duct tape being pulled off Lawrence Dobson, the Fed, in the pilot episode.
LOL BUNNY,
Doc Simon did such a good job reattaching Mals bodypart there I guess we all forgot about the ear session.
Maybe Mal will name a pet hamster after him
Well, if we're counting guests such as the Junior Reaver, then should we include Tracy and his "autopsy"? Nobody but Simon could've done that, and he very nearly got to before Tracy awoke in a justifiable panic. Plus IIRC Simon did some sort of pre-autopsy examination.
Don't forget to lock up the interstellar syndication rights to the Red Green show while you're at it.
