Opinions please. My son, a teenaged Browncoat has to write a paper giving the point of view in 5 scenes/chapters of his favorite character in a movie/book. He chose Serenity (of course) and Mal (even better).

Any ideas on which scenes-POV to use.

I should tell you that I am asking for help because the

waited until last night to tell me it is due tomorrow!

I don't know if I'm getting this right but here are a couple.

Inaras job,eps SHINDIG. Inara "... you'll lay a man out for implying I'm a whore,yet you call me one to my face!" Mal Reynolds " I may not respect your job but he didn't repect you. Thats the difference."

Mal Reynolds aboard an Alliance ship " It may have been the losing side but I'm not sure it was the wrong one."

POV from Mal. I'm sure these aren't pure quotes. I ain't that good. But if it helps with your sons paper,SHINY.

5 And when he flies serenity off at the end.

I didn't read the other suggestions, on purpose to force myself to think it out. I apologize if any of this is repetitive.

All scenes are from the movie Serenity (I assume that's what he's doing, not the pilot episode).

1) Mal/Simon confrontation (opening credits). This scene sets Mal's initial state -- stressed out, on the raggedy edge, and doing anything to survive (even putting a child in harm's way because she's "of use to me").

2) Escape from Lilac trade station. Here Mal refuses to help a stranger escape from the Reaver attack, choosing to keep the loot instead. Alternatively, the discussion with Zoe on the same subject.

3) First scene with Book, where Book stresses the importance of belief but Mal is skeptical. Key line: "Hiding ain't a plan?" Without belief, Mal can only react -- run and hide.

4) Mal/Operative confrontation after Book's death: "I don't murder children." "I do... if I have to", and "You're not a Reaver, Mal." This scene is what finally pushes Mal into action; instead of running or blowing with the wind, he's willing to take a terrible risk to learn the truth about Miranda.

5) Mal's "aim to misbehave" speech, the turning point for his character. Alternatively, the Mal/Operative dialog: "They're gonna hear about it. Cause they need to." "Do you believe that?" "I do." "Are you willing to die for that belief?" "I am... ...'course that ain't exactly Plan A". Either scene illustrates that Mal has found something to believe in, something worth risking his own life and the lives of his beloved crew. Compare to his original attitude: things are no longer judged on the basis of what's "of use to me".

I'd also suggest that your son discuss the differences in the *kinds* of belief held by Book, the Operative, and Mal (by the end of the movie).

Hope these give your son a few ideas!

I can think of loads of Firefly ones, but since he has to stick to Serenity the following three spring to mind immediatly.

The first one is the very first Mal scene. It's perfect, as it introduces how he sees each of the characters from his point of view - his exasperation with Wash, his easy, friendly manner with Zoe, his dismissive way with Jayne (ordering him to leave the grenades behind), his jokingly dissaproving tone with Kaylee ("My ship don't crash! She crashes, you crashed her!) and of course the tension between him and Simon.

The second scene follows the first (may even be considered the same thing.) Mal tells Simon, again in his jokey way that if anything happens to River "I will get very choked up about it. Honestly, there could be tears!" This again highlights the tension between Mal and Simon, but it also contrasts nicely with end of the bar scene, where Mal gathers the unconscious River up in his arms and carrys her to safety, as well as the following scene where they discuss what to do with her. Having been so dismissive of River's safety (in Simon's view) Mal is now forced to answer Jayne's question. "In ernest, Mal, why'd you bring her back on board anyway?"

The other scene I would choose is where Mal first meets the operative in the companion house, since this again contrasts the two characters nicely. It's especially useful to have Inara's outsider opinion voiced every now and then. I'd finish with the now infamous "I aim to misbehave" scene, where Mal tells the others he's going to publicise what happened on Miranda, which sums up Mal's attitude to the Alliance, and is one of the best expositions of the character in either the movie or the series.

My personal favorite isn't from the series, per se, but from a deleted scene.

In the original opening scene for "Serenity" (pilot), what's left of Mal's regiment is waiting in the valley. When some ships fly over, Zoe asks "What colors they flying?" Eventually, when reinforces finally do come, Zoe says "Thank God," to which Mal replies, "God? What colors he flying?" To me, this was one of the most moving parts of the series, because it explains so completely what the war took from Mal. Might be a good subject for discussion. Hope that it helps.

I just had to add one. From Mal's point of view when he pulls a gun on his crew and threatens them. Then he shoots the downed pilot as he surrenders. I'd love to hear what was going through Mal's head there.

I'd also like to tack on a little "side" to the post here FMF.

Although Mal Reynolds is a good captain and makes good decisions most of the time. There are those times when his judgment is poor or his answer to a question is pure Malcolm R.

Examples. Fight with operative in companion house,Serenity. Mal" What,no backup?" Operative " They'll come when they're needed." Mal" I'd start whistiling." Mal is clearly getting the crap beat out of him. Bad call on his part to go there. Inara saves the day.

Mal and Zoe at stairs on Serenity after hiding cargo. Mal " No one will ever find it there." Zoey "Whys that sir?" Mal "....Cause" Best answer I've heard in a long time,think I'll borrow it.

next Mal and Jayne in group setting in Serenitys lounge. Mal to Jayne " You want to captain the ship?" Jayne " Yes I do. Do a sight bettern you." Mal" Well....ya can't." Another gem.

these are just some of the stuff that make FF/S so real. I give your son an "A" on his paper already. Theres so much here he could write about.Maybe make some student & teacher browncoat fans along the way.

I LOVE Malcolm because of those answers. I saw the preview in the UK, and one of the scenes was him asking Jayne if he wanted to run the ship. When he answered "well......you can't" - That sold me. The rest of it looked sort of lame, and I remember describing it to my kids as a sort of Hans Solo western type thing. Had it not been for that line, I probably wouldn't have gone.

But you are right. He has chosen Mal, but we had a good discussion last night about all the characters. He was thinking about doing Jayne, but using Firefly as his "movie".

It was an excellent idea the teacher had, although I understand most of the students are using Bruce Almighty.

Really made Jamie take a look at motivation. He has learned a great deal.

Also, may I add that we successfully recruited 2 of their friends last night :)

Mal is decisive and not too sentimental when he's not dealing with crew. That scene in Serenity where the parliamentary operative says, "I'm unarmed," and Mal says, "Good," and shoots him is very telling.

He likes things black and white. Things tend to get a mite muddy when Inara's around, and so that scene where he tells her, "I wish to hell you was somewhere else," is also a good one. I like his little "you spin me about" speech.

How about the scene where he shoots the guy who's about to become Reaver lunch, at the beginning of the movie. Also decisive. And Mal's way of showing mercy. He believes there are some things that are worse than dying.

Another good scene is his private conversation with Zoe about the above, where she's unhappy that they didn't take the man with them. He wouldn't take him aboard the mule b/c his crew needed that cargo, and he will take care of his crew first. Period. That leads him to have to make some hard decisions.

Of course, there's his dry humor as well. Conversation with Simon at the beginning of the movie about Simon's facial expressions, "With a face like yours..." is a good one. Mal deals with stress with humor for as long as he can before he starts getting tough. Then, as soon as he can, he reverts back to humor.

Anothe Simon scene that illustrates this happens just after, when Mal's getting his shot so he can go down to the planet. "Besides, we may really crash this time." Shows a calm acceptance of the risks of this life he's chosen.

Hope that helps. That was just off the top of my head. I love me some Mal!
