Ok folks heres something sorta new. Lets turn back time to before Firefly started. We are looking for new cast members for all the major parts ( I know this is blasphemy but just suppose)
Who in your opinion could have played the parts listed below and what actors would we be talking about today if they could have made Firefly almost as good.

Mal-?
Zoey-?
Wash-?
Book-?
Jayne-?
Inara-?
Kaylee-?
Simon-?
River-?

Since I'm a lowdown lowdeceivng deceiver, I'll post mine at a later time. Any Takers?

Z

PS: for some reason I want to put Robbin Williams in one of these parts but like Jayne says "It don't make no sence."

I was tryng to think of someone who could play the intensity of Mal - but the only names I came up with aren't "rugged" enough.

Jason Behr and Jim Cazaviel (sp)

How 'bout Michael Biehn?

Nah - Nathan Fillion rules!

One day.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave!

Nathan doesn't know it yet, but I am his one true love! Is that weird?

I honestly can't think of anyone better to play the BDH's

also, not that I really mind but I googled and Jim's last name is spelled Caviezel. Just thought you'd like to know.

Oooh.

I am having flashbacks of Aliens. Michael Biehn as the lovely and oogley Hicks and Bill Paxton as the annoying whats his name that bitches all the time. There is always one and he does it well. I could see it. It works. Not as well as Nathan and Adam, but its doable.

Ok heres what I've come up with.Its pretty much an Aliens,Starship Troopers cast.

Mal Reynolds-(a young) Harrison Ford
or-Michael Biehn
or-Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers)

Jayne-Bill Paxton (pvt Hudson)
or-Mark Rolston (pvt Drake:Aliens)
or-Jake Busey (pvt Ace Levy:ST)

Zoey-Sigourney Weaver
or-Rosario Dawson(AVP)
or-Jenette Goldstein(pvt Vasquez:Aliens)
or-Dina Meyer( pvt Dizzy Flores:ST)

River-Carrie Henn(Rebecca"Newt" Jorden:Aliens)

Book- Bishop (Aliens)

Wash-Ricco Ross(pvt Frost:Aliens)

Simon- Neil Patrick Harris (ST)

Kaylee-Denise Richards (ST)

Inara-Catherine Zeta Jones (Zorro)

With this crew the Firefly series may have limped along into my heart.But I'm filing it away as the "Cast that never was" on the the tv series that WAS,but just not long enough.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Aliens and a lesser fan of Starship Troopers, but GOD!

Bishop actually does kinda work though.

Zoe floating above her and Wash's bed possessed by a demon. And then the Stay-Puft marshmallow man would have to play Jayne.....

I ....just....can't....

Well, except maybe Harrison Ford as Mal, since my first impression of Captain Tightpants was a tad Han Solo-ish. But I don't know if anyone else can pull of that "I'm smiling with the corners of my mouths so's I don't shoot you" expression that N. Fillion does so well. And I like the C. Zeta-Jones suggestion for Inara. Thing is, these guys did such a bang-up job.

Yeah, the BDH's can't be replaced...but if they had to be...

Clive Owen as Mal (not sure about the comedy, though)
Kate Beckinsale as Inara (Kate....mmm)

Milla Jovovich as Kaylee (I know, totally different, but I think she could do a good job)

Jensen Ackles as Wash

Terrence Howard as Book (he'd be good)

That's as far as I got....

Mila Jovovich as seen in Fifth Element might actually be able to pull off a passing resemblance to River. Someone who can do such a good job making themselves understood in an entirely fictional language might be able to manage the same thing in broken barely-comprehensible English. Still a pale shadow of the real thing, though. Summer is just extraordinary in the role.

I agree with Harrison Ford as a passable Mal and Catherine Zeta Jones as Inara.

I can't see anyone in the entire world except Jewel being able to come close to doing justice to Kaylee.

I honestly can't picture any of the characters played by anyone else. Which just goes to show what a great cast the show had.

If I had any acting ability whatsoever I'd fire Jewel and hire me instead but since I don't I guess I'll have to let her get all the Simon smoochies. *sigh*

So Ok browncoats some picks you liked some you didn't. Its what I expected.

Just to say, the writting and acting on FF/S were GREAT! the cast IMO were perfect for their character roles so the idea was not to replace them. But who in your opinion could have been a substitute.

You know like in school when you had a substitute teacher. You didn't have to like or dislike them. They just filled in. These were the fill-ins for FF/S in another space and time.

Casper Van Dien made my list because he took command in "Starship Troopers"as Rico. " You don't do your job I'll shoot you myself." Plus the handsom factor played in.He wasn't the number one guy anyway. I think he was third on my list.

Denise Richards as Kaylee didn't quite fit. But since she was capable of flying those bad/ace ships in ST I thought she could manage Serenitys engineroom.

ppl didn't like S.Weaver as Zoey? Oh well...

Jake Busey would make an alright Jayne I thought.

Bishop worked as Preacher Book for some I guess and C.Z. Jones as Inara. She does have those classic good looks.

Neil Patrick Harris and Sean, both play characters that have brain power. Thats why I matched them up.

Wash is kind of a toss up and the one most difficult to fill.

Anyway,any other browncoats care to take a shot?

How about Tom Hanks for Wash, Bill Paxton as Jayne, and Kevin Bacon as Simon?

An all-Apollo 13 cast...

That could give us Gary Sinese as Mal, Ed Harris as Book, Kathleen Quinlan as Zoe and Emily Ann Lloyd (played Lovell's daughter) as River. Inara and Kaylee... hmmm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't disagree on any particular point.
Okay, so I know some people wouldn't agree with some of these, but hey, we all love those who play the parts in the first place, it's just speculation!
Mal- Gerard Butler (yes, I know he was the Phantom, but if you could look past that, he does have that rugged leader quality to him)
David Boreanaz (Joss even said he originally wanted him to do the series)
Inara- Gong Li(she's a great chinese actress, plays Hatsumomo in Memoirs of a Geisha)
Maggie Q (another great asian actress)
Zoe- Dina Meyer (I really liked the idea of her as Zoe and she could pull off the dry sense of humor that Zoe exhibits)
Wash- Jay Mohr (I know some people may object but he has a smart ass quality and can still convey emotion, also Wash was the hardest one to think about, other than Simon)
Jayne- Vincent D'Onofrio (he's got something about him that I think he could pull off the part)
Jesse L. Martin (also some one I think that could pull it off)
Chris Meloni (another Law and Order guy but he is a great actor, and he can do comedy, any one seen Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle?)
Kaylee- Ginnifer Goodwin ( she was the only actress that has that bubbly sweetness that Jewel has, she's on Big Love, which also Carlos Jaccot is on too)
Simon- Stuart Townsend (Simon was really hard for me to think of because I can only imagine Sean Maher as Simon, but hey, he kinda looks like him....)
River- Kristin Kruek (another hard one because I really only see Summer Glau as River, but I think she could do it)
Book- Lance Henriksen (yes, I think Bishop would be good as Book, but he would definitely be a creepy Sheperd)
DONCOAT, LEIGHKOHL, nice posting guys.
I agree that 97.26% of your choices would make good substitutes.
Gerard Butler (of Tomb Raider fame) I think is a good choice for Mal.
Dina Meyer as Zoe (on my list as well)
Jay Mohr as Wash= good choice and I'll add Clive Owen as well
Vincent D'Onofrio,Jesse L. Martin and Chris Meloni as Jayne:works for me, only my wife is a big Law & Order fan and says Chris Meloni is Malcolm Reynolds all the way.
Ginnifer Goodwin,Stuart Townsend and Kristin Kruek all look good as Kaylee,Simon and River respectively.
Lance Henriksen as Book is on my list too.
Also my better half says a young Jane Seymour would make a very good Inara.
Gong Li & Maggie Q I'm not to certain of as Inara
DONCOAT most of your Apollo 13 crew work well for me and the others do too with the exception Gary(Lieutenant Dan) S. as Mal and Kevin(Footloose)Bacon as Simon. I just don't see it.
Thanks! As for the Inara actresses, I was trying to think of some Asian actresses, and these two women came to mind. I also think it would be nice to include maybe an Indian actress, like Indira Varma. I also thought James Purefoy would be a good Mal (both on Rome). I kind of disagree with the Jane Seymour, just because she seems a little vanilla, but that's just me. Also I thought Thandie Newton would be a good one for Inara.
How about a young Carey Lowell (Law & Order, License to Kill) as Inara? Not as exotic-looking as some, but she could easily pull off the smart-and-sexy aspects.
Just to defend my (admittedly strange) suggestion of Kevin Bacon as Simon, I find that Bacon has the ability to slip into almost any kind of character, which is one reason he gets a lot of work in Hollywood. But he's certainly not Sean Maher.
A casting possibility for Kaylee would be Caroline Dhavernas (Jaye in Wonderfalls). I think she'd be able to handle the irrepressably cheerful role, though Jaye was the complete opposite of that in most of Wonderfalls. Plus she has that non-intimidating, girl-next-door beauty thing going. And she's Canadian like Jewel, so there you go.
I also wanted to see if anyone had ideas for the guest characters like Saffron, Niska, and Early. I wrote earlier that Beth Grant would've been great for Patience, also thought of Louise Fletcher (because Nurse Ratchet is scary!)
DONCOAT & LEIGHKOHL,
Great posts you two. I must admit that many of the names on your list are new to me. Also at times I may not remember the name but on an image search I do realize who some of the actors are.
I want to revise my last post. Think I listed Clive Owen as Wash. That was a mistake on my part. I ment to say Owen Wilson might make a good Wash. Clive( Sin City)Owen would fit Mals spot better.
now on to your choices: Indira Varma,Thandie Newton,young Carey Lowell and Bahar Soomekh all are very beautiful women and would make great subs as Inara.
Caroline Dhavernas looks quite able to fill Kaylees shoes. Even found pics where she and Jewel look a lot alike.
James Purefoy looks like he could fit Mal pretty good.
We all know that handsome looks and pretty faces do not make good actors, and that some actors although great in some character roles are not so great in others. These folks all have great looks and in that part can sit in as subs. But with them instead of our real Firefly cast, well the show may not have the fan base it has now.
LEIGHKOHL:side characters like Saffron,Niska,Patience and Bagder I haven't really thought about. Might be fun to do so though. All these actors too, did great jobs in their role. I do agree Louise Fletcher could mayhaps pulled off the Paticence role.
That would have been very scary. Especially if right before guns began ablazing she would have shouted the words," IT'S MEDICATION TIME!!"
