I don't know how much anybody has been keeping track, but it has been said by the US government that they plan to go back to the moon in the relative near future (2015 or something like that). Obviously, they are building a new spacecraft to accomplish this mission, a spacecraft which will theoretically be able to go to the moon, land, take off, and return, all in one piece. It occurs to me that this new ship is going to need a name. I don't know who we should all write letters too, but wouldn't it be sweet if it ended up getting called Serenity. I mean, its as good, if not better, as any other name right?

That'd actually be pretty shiny. Write to NASA and Congress, maybe? It'd be a long-shot, but what the hey. I just can't wait until they start letting us sign up to colonize Mars

I don't know, haven't we screwed up Earth enough as it is?

"Death Star (we've managed to wipe out a goodly portion of the world's population, now we need new worlds to annhilate) 3000....."

Yes. Yes, we have. Which is why we need to get the hell off the dying rock and move to other ones. Hopefully we can terraform other planets and use our new awareness of the fragility of a contained ecosystem/sphere and technology to keep history from repeating itself.

But, even if we are doomed to muck up one planet after the next (maybe we'll get to the point where we can reclaim "black rocks") I want to see the species survive as long as possible. After all, it's not the great^25 grand kids' faults that things have gone the way they did and they deserve a fair shake at life if we can pull it off.

Well, the first space shuttle got named Enterprise because of fan outcry. No reason we can't do the same now.

'Course, the way science (and NASA in particular) has been going lately, it'll probably be called SSLV-1A or something equally poetic and inspiring.

I would be very happy if the name Serenity was chosen for our new space endeavers. Also if all the astronauts wore SHINY brown coats

Sounds great don't it?

YEEAAAARGH!

Excuse me, I just had to work that out of my system.

Sigh. People are still buying that "We never went to the moon" bullpucky, eh?

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I suggest that you to Wikipedia, and look up "Apollo moon landing hoax accusations" to see a nice listing of all the hoax claims, and their rebuttals. So far the theorists haven't come up with a single one that holds water.

Specifically, as to the "wind on the moon" question: (from Wikipedia):

Quote:

The flag placed on the surface by the astronauts flapped despite there being no wind on the Moon.

* The astronauts were moving the flag into position, causing motion. Since there is no air on the Moon to provide friction, these movements caused a long-lasting undulating movement seen in the flag. There was a rod extending from the top of the flagpole to hold the flag out for proper display. The fabric's rippled appearance was due to its having been folded during flight and gave it an appearance which could be mistaken for motion in a still photograph. The top supporting rod of the flag was telescopic and the crew of Apollo 11 found they could not fully extend it. Later crews did not fully extend this rod because they liked how it made the flag appear. A viewing of the videotape made during the moonwalk shows that shortly after the astronauts remove their hands from the flag/flagpole, it stops moving and remains motionless. At one point the flag is in view for well over thirty minutes and it remains completely motionless throughout that period (and all similar periods).

As for who photographed Neil Armstrong taking that first small step, this one falls in the "Well, Duh!" category: there was a video camera mounted and extended from the side of the landing module especially for this purpose; the design was public knowledge before and after the landing, but who ever heard of a conspiracy theorist being stopped by piddling fact or a rational answer?

As for the proposed return to the moon, I don't care what they name the new ship, as long as they build it!
