That's not a fair question. I think all three are the best.

Nathan for his humor.

David for his serious side and sexiness

Sarah for her strong beautiful side attitude.

I don't know about you but that's my opinion

ONTHEDRIFT

Ok, I'll be brave and answer.
I must say first though, that I think a lot of "which is better" has to do with the writing -how much of an opportunity the actors are given to shine, through the plot or character development. That said I am going to have to go with, (big surprise), Nathan. Each of the actors mentioned have given stunning performances and have great moments, but Nathan seems to really emote regardless of whether or not it's a big "reaction" or emotional scene. There always seems to be a lot going on within Mal, and you can see it in Nathan's eyes. Granted all three actors played somewhat closed off characters - responsibility, their past etc. set them apart from everyone - but Mal always seemed more accessible to me. I at least thought it was easier to gain insight into
Mal's internal thoughts and struggles through Nathan's performance. He seemed to really feel it, he embodied Mal; it's easy for me to get lost in Firefly and never remember for a moment "it's a SHOW" because of the excellant performances of the cast.
Anyways, just my two credits.

(And for the record, they are all three terrific actors who enhanced extraordinary shows. A very difficult poll Chrisisall!)

Me honestly...I'd go with Nathan. It might be that he was given more chance to emote due to the writing, but that's my feeling.

Then again, Sarah can make me cry on cue...

This is a trick question isn’t it? Hands down it’s Nathan and I’m rating this not just on Firefly, but on other acting jobs that I have seen him in as well. He has proven that his ability runs the gamut from comedy to drama to action and even romantic.

I will probably get a lot of people saying “What the hell are you talking about”, but I never really cared much for Sara. I have not been impressed by her in any of her movies or in Buffy. I don’t know if they always want her to play the same character or if she just give the same performance, but there is nothing new or original from her in any of her parts. Now maybe my Buffy comment is a bit unfair as I never really watched the show, but the times I did I would often fall asleep if it was not a Allison Hannigan heavy episode.

I never really watched Angel so I can’t honestly say one way or another if I thought David was better than Nathan, but I have watched nearly every episode of Bones and I feel he is an adequate actor, but nothing special. However, as ONTHEEDGE stated, a big reason for this could be the writing.

Final Grades
Nathan = A+
David = C
Sara = F

But that’s just my opinion.

Oooh tough question. If we were talking 5 or 6 years ago I would have said Sarah simply because she was deliciously evil in Cruel Intentions and repeatedly broke my heart in Buffy seasons 1-3. After that though... not so much, I just don't think she really put everything into her performances after that. It was still good but no longer great.

I never would have put David as the better of the three. I agree he is an Ok actor and he has Nathan beat when it comes to the art of brooding but I don't think he expresses the same range as Nathan and Sarah.

So I seem to have narrowed it down to Nathan although I would want to see more evidence before confirming that decision. When it comes to action and humour definitely but obviously, I haven't seen him in more than 3 or 4 roles so I could still be convinced to change my mind.

Good thought-provoking question! My mind is now in the serious place...

I CAN'T or WON'T choose (pick one)

I love them all,

Nathan 'cause I've seen that he can do a range of emoting.

Sarah 'cause she has done the same thing with varying amounts of success.

David 'cause he plays the strong kind of brooding character that's fun too.

I never was taken with Alyson 'cause it seems to me that no matter what she does, she'll always be Willow. She is either chosen for or chooses roles that closely resemble Willow, and I have never seen her act any differently from when she was on buffy to anything else she's done. I still love her though.

I have seen enough of Buffy and Angel now that I can compare reasonably well.

Nathan by far is the best actor. He makes me believe he is the person he is playing, no matter which role it is.

And he's Mal... he was born to be Mal.

Like other peeps I like all 3, but there are a few things about Nathan which I think set him a little bit apart. Granted most of this is based on special features, commentaries and deleted scenes from the show which I havn't seen from Davin/Sarah, but still.

Not only do I think that he's a *great* actor, portraying deferent emotions and delivering difficult lines extremely well I think the fact that he loved his character so much made all the difference. From the BMD commentray we know he has a lot of input on what his character does, pointing out things about Mal (his responses, and how he'd react in a situation) that even Joss wouldn't have though of. He wasn't just reading what he was given but putting something of himself into it all. He also did a lot of his own 'stunts' and, where usually a double would do the basics, he even added his own flare in that part of the acting.

That's one of the reasons I love the show so much, when the lights are down and the cameras are off the actors don't just sit in their trucks twiddling their thumbs, they all got along and have a love of the show that, I think, showed though.

Just stir that hornets nest a little more, Chrisisall!

I have to say Nathan for his range and the fact that no matter what kind of character he is playing, he just sucks you into believing it's real.

I haven't seen David and Sarah be much more than variations on their Buffy characters, and though I like both I can't say that adds to the range.

Nathan, on the other hand....went from a soap opera to a sitcom where he was a blue collar guy, to an evil priest, to a more or less normal guy in a bad situation (Water"s Edge) to Mal to a bumbling cop in Slither...all different, all believable, all making me think the guy is some sort of wonder.

Not real coherent but there you go.

I'll admit, I haven't seen Sarah Michelle Gellar in much besides Scooby Doo. But I'm still inclined to put her on the bottom of the list.

*shields self from the hordes of Buffy fans.*

Being the Browncoat that I am, I can't help but go with Nathan. I mean, the man has range. If nothing else attracted me to Firefly (and there's lots, obviously), it would be him. And I swear it has nothing to do with that cute rear of his. Or that nice little smirk.

I will give major props to David, however. I never had the chance to watch him on Angel, but I have watched him on Bones. His character Booth is a real joy to watch, and in the more recent episodes, you have a good chance to see this actor's talent. Once again, this has nothing to do with how cute he is.

All in all, I'd say we're dealing with some great actors here (except for Gellar, *shields self from Buffy fans again*), with interesting careers ahead of them.

nathan fillion is without a doubt one of the most gifted actors around in terms of comedic timing and his ability to deliver a line in a way that helps humour complement his actions. He has that one-of-the-lads persona and a cheeky sense of humour, but can play it as serious as the likes of Al Pacino if needs be. He deserves a lot more than a two cancelled tv shows (Firefly and Two Guys and a Girl) and two underperforming movies that were excellent in quality (Serenity and Slither)

Sarah Michelle Gellar is beautiful and talented but as an actress her range is limited.

David Boreanez is as wooden as the fence in my garden.

Nathan has show exquisite comic timing both in Firefly and Two Guys and a Girl. Shown remarkable emotive range and depth of feeling with serious, painful, and loving moments in Firefly, and demonstrated a wicked dark side as Caleb in Buffy. i think that qualifies him as the best as a general actor.
I would say that Sarah does a fabulous job in making one role hers and making it complex and multi layered, but she simply hasn't Nathan's range or flexibility.

I'm having a hard time picking 1 or 2, but I know David comes in third. He had some impressive moments, but overall I don't think he is as good as either Nathan or SMG.

Now, between Nathan and SMG? That's a hard one for me.

I was shocked by the depth of Nathan's stuff in Firefly as well as his ability to put the comedy in with the serious bits. But I wasn't too impressed with him in Two Guys and a Girl...I just didn't like the character that much. I just saw his little part in Saving Private Ryan and had to turn away it was so bad. (possibly bad because I wanted my captain, not the whimpering soldier).

SMG seemed at the end of her range in Buffy, but she did that character for seven years. An emotionally unavailable girl, there's only so many times you can act, 'I care, but I can't care too much because of who/what I am' without it getting a little stale. She has some outstanding moments when given the chance. 'The Body' comes to mind as well as "I Will Remember You" from AtS. But then again...there's those funny flailing arms of frustration (credit to TWoP). What are those?

Nathan gets first for so readily inhabiting a character. Mal was his from the first episode. His love for the character, the crew, the ship, the show was in every line. If Firefly had lasted 7 years, the answer may be different, but as is, there was no chance for staleness or reaching the end of one's range within a character.

I can not agree on your assessment of our Nathan in Saving Private Ryan. I think he was right on in his characterization. I too had to look away, but because it was too painful.

I have to agree with some others on SMG. She was good in Buffy (Although I think Allyson was the stand out there) but I have not been impressed with any of her other work and I really hated her in the soap when she was yonger.

Hrmmm...interesting. I suppose that's what makes the world go round.

I just didn't buy the SPR character. I couldn't tell exactly what I was suppose to feel for the character. Did he really think his brother was dead? Was the crying real? (Didn't seem so to me). Was he just acting so he could go home? Is he suppose to be the characterization (joe schmoe who is going to be relieved and ecstatic to be going home)of Private Ryan that Tom Hanks and Co. are frustrated they are going to save? I just don't know...which makes me feel the acting (and/or directing) was weak.

I have noticed for me, though, that I often don't like it when some male actors break down. Possibly just my issue. I will say that when Tom Hanks breaks down after Giovanni Ribisi gets killed I was right there with him. That was gut wrenching for me. So who knows. Maybe I just respond differently than most.

I think his character as one of the "Ryans" was supposed to be rather innocent, naive. He genuinely believes that his brothers are dead and then is left wondering if they really are. It is really quite sad, and the reaction of all the hardened soldiers that have bitched the whole time they were trying to find him - that was very moving.

I thought the hardened soldiers reaction was basically "What a wuss...people are dying all around us all the time. Why is this so special." Nathan's character is what they think Private Ryan will be like, but isn't ultimately. They respect Matt Damon's Private Ryan. Not Nathan's.

I think they are reacting to (a) his reaction to the news that his brothers are dead. I think that they had dehumanized him a little as they trekked through France, then seeing him react brought home that it could be them hearing that news, then (b) I think they were reacting to the fact that this guy has been freaked out in the middle of a war zone with NO WAY of contacting his brothers to reassure himself.

I think that it was the "this could be me" factor that was so heart wrenching.

I can not watch that part

LOL!

I think Sarah and David have the ability to really bring out the best in each other - maybe that is because they had been their characters and had been working together for so long. Two examples I would cite. The final scene of 'Amends' in Buffy S3 when they argue about whether Angel killing himself is the right thing to do and the scene in 'I will remember you' in Angel S1 when Angel tells Buffy they will lose their day together. Both were amazing.

I agree with you. Both of those scenes are incredible...although I prefer the end of 'I Will Remember You' if only because there is no righteous anger but instead it is all vunerability and desperation...two things we rarely get to see in Buffy.

I've never been impressed by Boreanaz, but the other two give fantastic performances. I'll say Gellar, just because she worked so hard for seven years on Buffy and always left me convinced. Not that Nathan's probably not just as good, or -for all I know- better. He terrified me as Caleb, so when I watch Firefly for the first time it took me a while to adjust to him as the hero. But you have to give tribute to that much hard work.
