This isn't a great review, and the reviewer doesn't seem to really 'get' Firefly.

Guess he just didn't like it. Wonder if he actually watched the whole thing.

On the message boards he called Jewel Staite's acting "weak as hell." O-kay.

He really doesn't get it at all. :-( Everything that he says detracts from the show is what MADE the show interesting in the first place. I was happy that there weren't any aliens or lasers (and didn't he watch "Heart of Gold"? There was his damn laser.).

Maybe I'm taking it too personally.

Folk who dismiss this show have a very unnerving habit of saying that Nathan's work is somehow unremarkable. That loon from the "evil firefly hater" thread said he obviously got cast because of a passing resemblance to Dirk Bennedick (sp?). This stuff just floors me because to my way of thinking Nathan inhabits that role more fully than anyone in anything I can think of. The guy is Mal. And Mal is extraoridary as a person and as a character in a fiction.

I'm certain this guy never watched half of the episodes. And Jewel is annoying? Like when?

"Lack of polish?" I've never seen a show that burst on the scene in such a complete and balanced way. Remember the first seasons of X-files or Quantum Leap? Man, they were weak, but both those shows had a "certain something" and by their third seasons knew what they were about. But Firefly leaps out of Joss's head and onto the screen like a Athena from the brow of Zeus!

Dollars to doughnuts the guy didn't watch the whole set. But if he watched anything, he'd have watched "Serenity," and if he didn't "get" that, then, wow. That's all I can say. Taste is taste is taste but I can't conceive of someone not being blown away by Serenity.

This review annoys me to no end. The DVDs need all the help they can get. I wonder if this guy isn't related in some way to Fox execs?

Oh, and Jewel Staite being a horrible actress?

Okay,

In what way does a damning review like CHUD's hurt Firefly's sales and thus chances of being revived as a move? Well, this is lifted off a response to the review in CHUD's message board:

"here I was thinking about going out and buying Firefly tonight. Now I'm all torn...and will probably be checking out Space Ghost instead."

Great. Thanks, CHUD.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I don't honestly think that this review is really going to hurt anything. First off, it is only one guy's opinion. Don't know about you, but I don't put much stock in any one person's opinion, especially someone I do not know personally.

I would say by reading his review that he is a big Star Trek/Star Wars/Babylon 5 fan, so Firefly's lack of aliens, laser weapons, and spectacular spaceship battles probably jaded his interview. I would be willing to bet he only watched several episodes, and then only to drool over Morena.

This does not seem like an subjective review to me, & I hope that anyone who reads this will not allow one person's opinion to keep them from making their own decision.

Thanks.

And to make matters worse, he knocked the theme song- For some reason that really pissed me off-
And I dont get it- What part of "flies the ship, has a huge part in several eps, dynamic with Zoe" did the guy not get when he said Alan T. had nothing to do?
He wont be recommending the DVD? That's cool, I wont be recommending his site- And I'm good at boycotting :)

Actually I disagree. I love both Star Wars and Firefly passionately. I think the reviewer is more likely not a fan of sci-fi at all. If you talk to most fans of SW (at least the ones I talk to), it's not just about the aliens and lasers but the mythical potryal of heroes and villains and redemption. Basically the same themes you find in Firefly.

In fact, quite a few of my SW friends are HUGE Firefly fans as well. It's just a darn good story that makes you think and question your own notions and opinions.

More than likely this reviewer phoned this one in...he read a bad review of the show at some point..went into the DVD collection with a set idea that he already didnt like it and never even gave it a chance.

His loss.

Don't get me wrong. I like Star Wars too, as well as Babylon 5, but I found it really refreshing to have a Sci Fi series focus on humanity, the struggle of humanity in deep space, and human nature without bogging down the storyline w/ aliens and all their ins and outs.

I agreed with that part. He had a lot of presence, but Wash is pretty well the most expendable character and expending him could make for some serious drama action.

I love Wash so much. Oh my god, I love him. He could have done a lot more and didn't get the chance.

I think the whole thing was worth it for the "Hawaiian Zorro" cutline. Hi-larious.

I'm not really sure what show this guy was watching. Maybe just fox's promos. I guess if he wants aliens and polish he'll have to learn to love 'Enterprise'. Maybe he already does.

It also has the vague whiff of another Buffy fan pissy cause Joss did something different.

True...depending on how they are handled, sometimes the aliens can be ....distracting.

Is that a group: Buffy fans who are "pissy" that Joss did something different? If so, they're silly. I'm one of the most fervent Buffy fans there is and I love Firefly to death, too. Why should they be carbon copies of each other? It seems to me that any Buffy fan who hates Firefly is a Buffy fan who only likes Buffy for certain surface things. I know I'm making a broad generalization here. But I'm one of those Buffy fans who's big into the academic analysis of Buffy (yeah, call me pompous, I don't mind). I own all the academic tomes on Buffy. And as far as I'm concerned, Firefly has an equally fascinating number of layers and levels to analyze and discuss.

I think that the reviewer just doesn't appreciate striking originality, uniqueness, and off-center brilliance. He didn't seem to "get" what made Buffy special, either.

Darn, I'm officially extremely annoyed again. There was something in his tone with really got to me.

They're by no means a large segment of Buffy fanhood, but I've seen and met several fans of Buffy and Angel who were quite bitter about Joss turning his attention away from their favorite shows. It makes about as much sense as the fans who were angry about favorite characters getting killed, but they are out there.

And while I see the obvious similarities between the Buffyverse and Firefly, there are enough differences to justify a preference. I never took the time to appreciate Buffy, primarily because I don't care much for horror and monster stuff. On closer examination I now see that is much more, but its still not my preference. I'm not upset with Buffy fans who just didn't care for Firefly, it's the ones who were bitter towards it for fairly irrelevant reasons that seem petty to me.

I guess I can kind of see some rabid fans getting bent out of shape over Joss turning his creativity away from their favorite shows, but they are the minority.

Personally I have been a fan of Buffy since it first aired, and hated to see it go. I have even started getting into Angel since it started running on TNT at night, but neither of these shows affected me the way Firefly has done. In all honesty, I have never even posted on a Buffy board, and rarely even look at one on the internet. Now if you consider I am here everyday, and really enjoy discussing Firefly, that should tell you how much this show means to me.

Well, it makes me feel better that I've never heard of this website. But maybe I'm clueless!

(edited to add: I read the message board and it seems like there are a good number of CHUD/FF fans standing up for the show. I'm glad it's at least an intelligent message board overall.)

Agreed that there are enough differences between the various Joss show 'verses that preferences are justified. But it's the bitter subgroups of Buffy and Angel fandom who perplex me. I've turned away from Angel and Buffy boards because of how vicious discussion can get -- usually about the merits or lack thereof of various characters. On the one hand, it's great in a way that Joss's fictional creations become so important to people that they can get all possessive. On the other hand, things get so nasty that it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Since I'm new to Firefly fandom, I'm wondering if there's that same vicious element lurking around in Firefly boards? My first sense is there isn't, which is a great relief.

A person has the right to like or dislike any show they want. I have always heard about buffy fans that did not watch angel. I heard that was one reason why they brought spike over to angel, to bring buffy fans over that did not previously watch angel. Myself, I have been a buffy fan since the beginning and never even considered not watching angel. I'm just curious why a person who loved buffy from the beginning would not naturally gravitate to angel as well? As I said this is not a criticism just a curiosity. I've never had the chance to ask someone that fell into this category. Also, as big a fan as I am of buffy and angel, I have never posted on any of those sites. But firefly did move me to do so, that and the greatness of this site. Kudos to the makers of this site.
