goodmornin browncoats,

After a couple of weeks without watching any FF the other night when it was late and quiet at the Z house I decided to start up the dvd player and watch OOG. I feel its one of the best eps and something worth watching once a month or so.

A thing I enjoy doing when theres something I like,is exploring why. Why it works? What makes it so good? What causes a work of art to be like this? Anyway there are some question and opinions in the OOG eps I want to post up.

First, I love the way the show breaks down and shows how ( other than Simon,River & Book) every individual finds their way to Serenity.

Second, I really like the character play between the individuals and Mal and each other.

Heres a list of some points I see.

Mal, being the Captain that he is keeps his head and keeps things in order of importance from the get-go. This includes ordering Wash away from his love Zoey.It shows Jayne that he isn't the only one that has differences with the captain.

Mals interaction with Kaylee. He wants her to do something (fix the ship) yet his way of handling this interaction is completely different from the way he handles Wash.

Wash and Mals shouting match on the bridge. Funny, but in this part Jayne steps in as the one with any sense and makes peace and shows he really isn't a dummy (there is a God)

The underlying relationship between Mal and Inara is stired some more.

In jaynes goodbye to Mal. there is respect shown but it doesn't come out in words.

Lastly is something that is at a level where it almost a whisper.

Wash " When your miracle comes. Push this button. It will call back the shuttles." Now think about this. Serenity is out in deep space, I mean deeeeep space. not a hope,prayer and slaybells haven't been heard in,well forever. Yet at the end of it all a miracle does indeed happen. The ship is saved. All the crew return and everything is right back to buissnes. the show just kinda says something.

Any thoughts?

"Out of Gas" was indeed one of the better episodes, for all the reasons you stated above, but my absolute favorite bit has to be from the opening of the movie.

I never noticed until my ump-teenth viewing that from the time Mal says "What was that?" until River says "I know, I'm going for a ride," is one continuous camera shot. Just one take! Every character (actor) on the ship had to be exactly where they were supposed to be (Zoe twice!) without a single mistake.

Also it showed quite well that the entire set was built as a single unit. The camera starts in the control room up front, roams all the way to the engine room in the back, down to the medical bay, and out to the docking bay WITHOUT A SINGLE BREAK. It just gives such a feeling of continuity to the ship - it makes the whole thing REAL. Absolute genius if you ask me.

But then we all already know that Joss is a genius, yes?

I also really liked "Trash" just because it was such a fun episode (and it showed the Windows 2000 New Hardware Wizard when the reprogrammed card was reinserted into the garbage container!).

Yepper a real good show. Another point of interest in that one. The MUSIC. Simply fantastic and Tristan one of the advantages of watching late at night. No one can seen "This" teddy bear get all puffyeyed.

Zetta, heck, I cried openly the first time I watched that one...cried for several of them, actually. That is what I love about Firefly...I can be laughing, cheering on the crew, shocked by an occurence, and crying...all in one episode. And yes, the music! I was not aware of how deeply it would affect me until I heard the song from The Message when I was not watching the episode...wow.

It's an awesome tour de force. However, it's actually a "twoer", not a "oner". There is one cut, but it's well disguised. It happens when the camera swings from Mal to Simon as they go down the stairs.

That had to be done, since the Serenity set was two sets -- the upper and lower halves weren't actually on top of each other.

Even so, both halves of that sequence were very long. Neither was done in one take, of course. But I'm impressed by the audacity of it. First time director, but no sign of fear.

Getting back on topic, one thing I noticed and appreciated on my very first viewing of OOG is that the three different "time tracks" are each shot on different film stock, giving each a unique tone and "feel". It was also a cue to the viewer that a shift had occurred.

Another thing: like so many of the best Firefly eps, this one masterfully combines intense danger and tension with really sharp humor. The whole "recruiting Jayne" scene, the Mal/Wash argument on the bridge, Zoe's first look at Serenity, the "genius mechanic", the way we meet Kaylee... priceless!

"I'm pointin' right at it!"

You know, I think that might make a good tag line...

I noticed that stuff too, Doncoat. All part of the genius that is the episode. And Kaylee's introduction makes me laugh every time.

Funnily enough, I never get weepy at the time the crew leaves the ship, or even when they get back and Mal asks if they'll be there when he wakes up. The bit that gets me every single time is the very last shot, when the salesman is trying to sell Mal one of the ships and he's not paying any attention, just looking at the little firefly class vessel sitting in the yard ... and dreaming.

Oh yeah, the music is great throughout. Especially the scenes where the others leave and Mal locks the ship down.

Quick question - the vessel the salesman was trying to sell Mal, is it the same ship (or class) as the one some guy tried to persuade Book to board in Serenity Part One?

I would say not. It seemed quite different to me. The salesman was pushing one that was a sort of vertical cylinder with thrusters on the sides. Book was looking at a rather massive, horizontal unit that looked a little like the front end of a 747, unless I'm thinking of the wrong ship.

Doncoat, man you had me laughing about the Kaylee dialog. I love the way Jewel hit her lines. It was perfect. How many times do we come across ppl that think we should know something that is clear as a bell to themselves. " I'm looking right at it." captures that attitude so well. Theres something about a woman that knows her go-se.

My favorite moment among so many in this ep is the moment when Mal says " Everybody dies alone."

I lose it every time.

This is a line that said by a lessor actor would have seemed overwrought or overdone. Not Nathan Fillion. He IS Mal.. in that moment you know it more than ever and you also know that Mal IS prepared to die alone.

I would follow a man like that anywhere and it's obvious his crew feels that way as well. I'd wager there are others here who felt that exact same emotion while watching this episode.

This is not regular tv.. this is something more and we feel it in our hearts.

The last scene of this episode really plays my emotions. I love Serenity, just like Mal does.
I love it when he (and we, thru his eyes)see her for the first time.

I love the contrast of community in OoG. This episode is one of the few times we see everyone enjoying each other's company. It becomes such a contrast to the scenes of Mal wounded and alone, struggling through the ship that it just wrenches something in me every single time. Mal (and us the viewers) as as much wounded by the bullet as by the sudden emptiness on the ship. By interlacing these scenes, it truly gives each side of it, that much more impact, it makes both perfect foils of one another.

I also love how the contrast shows of more of what mal usually keeps hidden. His continual memory onslaught shows how as much as he does love the ship, a part of that feeling is for his crew, and its far more than he likes to acknowledge. His question at the end shows just how much he has come to care for all of them, something he normally wouldn't show, but I rather suspect the drugs loosened his control about that somewhat.

I think the most tear-jerking episode for me has to be The Message. Not only does the story pull on your heart strings, but the music also really brought me to tears. And then when I watched the extras, the composer said the music at the end was a farewell to the show which made it even more heart-wrenching.
