I love this site. I have since the beginning. I remember very early on Joss Whedon himself posted here,(how cool is that?) and this is one of the very few sites I frequent, if not for the love of the Firefly verse, then definately a love for the fellow Browncoats who post here.

Here is why I'm worried: It seems all good sites come to an end. There was about a 2 month period for me when I didn't visit Fireflyfans.net once. Call it the post-Serenity blues or whatever, butI started getting a bit jaded, and for the first time in a long while, Firefly didn't have the spark for me that kept me going for so long. I remember when Fast Lane replaced Firefly on Fox Friday's schedule. That was low down, and Fox almost ruined my enthusiasm for one of the best shows ever created. It was Fireflyfans.net that got me through the dark times.

A few weeks back I visited again, and to my surprise, I really, really missed being here. I missed the people, the topics, and I also got into Firefly again in a big way. It seems some of the core members have vanished, while others have remained(thank you).

My question is this: If there is no Firefly/Serenity on the horizon, no light at the end of the tunnel, nothing to generate a buzz in the Firefly universe, will this site remain?

I hope so. I can say without second guessing mysely this is the best site on the net, and I won't abandon it.

This site like everything will last as long as it needs to, hopefully till we get another series or film or maybe more. Just hope its soon though.

As long as people post, FFF.net will be a viable part of the 'verse.

New folks discover it everyday. FollowMal would know for certain, but I'd say roughly 4-5 new folks de-lurk and join up per week.

Fireflyfans are professionals at spreading the word, keeping the faith, and finding things to celebrate. There's a hope that the SerenityNow screenings could become an annual event (PLEASE NOTE: B!x neither confirms nor denies, since he does not want to speak for the volunteers who made this year's event such a success).

I would say it may be the friends we make who keep this fandom alive. And that's what will serve us in the long run if we aren't treated to a sequel. But we will be, IMHO.

And FFF.net will be here if we are here, by the grace of Haken.

The Browncoat community is too large and too stuborn to just disapear so Fireflyfans or something very like it is likely to remain in existence as long as the internet itself. Individuals may come and go but the community will survive.

There are websites dedicated to shows that haven't been on air in decades. If a show is good enough, even a short run and long past cancellation won't kill off interest in it. Think about Star Trek and The Prisoner - they still carried on their fandoms for years without any new material (coming up on 40 years for The Prisoner, if you can believe it).

Long live fff.net

As long as there is a community, then Firefly Fans will live. Either that or the Internet collapses due to a virus capable of eating up entire computer networks. Either way, we will prevail. I have know about Firefly Fans for about a year now I finally decided to de-lurk myself yesterday. Out of all the months I have spent here checking out this website, I have seen it grow even after Serenity blew over. There is no doubt in my mind that Firefly Fans will stay online for a long time.

Like I said, this site is like Serenity herself - a bit outdated (no offense, I like it), with the occasional hick-up, but it's got very fine people on it, and as long as Haken keeps taking good care of her, it'll keep flying and take on new passengers every day (and there's far more than 4-5 people a week - I was gone for about 4-5 days (<21000), and now there's more than 21060 registered members, so I'm guessing it's double Hera's estimate). New people always bring new stuff to talk about - and old stuff, too.
And yes, I will from now on refer to this site as a "she".

Apart from that, I met a lot of my very best friends through Star Trek, and although most of us aren't interested in ST anymore, we've become so tight friends like you wouldn't believe, although these days we're literally scattered across the globe. That was RL, though, weekly meetings in a pub, good times (no uniforms - only once a month with more than 100 people at a biger location). I'm not saying we should forget about FF and just stay friends, I'm just saying that our communication will keep this board buzzing.
I live in Germany and I'm gonna meet Hera this Thursday, how shiny is THAT?
And you said yourself how you realized that you missed FFF.net. Just remember that, and hopefully we'll see more of you - it's always shiny when a veteran pops up their head. Even shinier if they stay awhile (hint, hint).
I salute you, OPPYH! Worry not, it ain't over by a longshot, and as long as Haken doesn't have a nervous breakdown, we'll always be waiting to greet both extatic new fans and veterans who pop in occasionally to get a sniff of that sweet nostalgia and the new gust of wind this summer will bring.

The Serenity Summer Campaign is on, baby - prepare to kick some serious pigu!

there is a solidarity in our love for this show, that is unique and diffrent and thats what I love about this forum!!

Ok, there's my DS9 that i thought of randomly... This site, it's like a metaphor for Firefly, it is... we've had our glorious moments, and now we're not living in the past but we're not moving on... we're just, living. Like them there crew of Serenity. Or, if we do ever get the show back up, then these few years are a minor setback, and our Serenity Valley is still decades away.

Fireflyfans.net will be around for years to come. The only thing preventing that will be the destruction of the internet.

I agree. We keep it alive - and as long as we're here, our community will hold. If this site were to dry up (god forbid) then we'd find another way. We're Browncoats - it's in the job description.

But I agree, with no new Firefly presently on the horizon people are right to wonder just how much is there to hold on to? How much is there to talk about? A great deal I say. If the Powers that be aren't presently going to make more, then we have to do it ourselves through fan fiction (not slash stuff though...I just don't get that) and drawing, poetry, and any other medium we can think of.

And at the end of the day, whatever else we have, we have each other. We may not always agree, and we have differing opions (but then, diversity is a good thing in my book) but we are united on our love for this show - and like Dave said, people may come and go, but the community will remain, and with new people finding us all the time, I think Firefly and FFF has a lot of life left in it yet.

The only way we will get our sequels is to keep doing what we are doing, sharing Firefly with others.

Speaking on behalf of the folks at www.stillflying.net, we have plans to hold the line with our virtual Firefly project until the end of Season Seven (or possibly until Joss brings us more Firefly movies and/or TV on a regular basis). I believe we have about 126 episodes left to go, and fully expect that we'll be putting info about our series finale here (unless, of course, you know... sequels or a new TV series...).

SHYTE, Guy!!

You're still at 16 - you have yet to FIND any sanity, sir

well... all right... I sympathize: if I don't fff.net, it does seem to affect my ...ummm... "They" call it sanity...

allow me to offer my kudos to Haken, along with all the other alzheimers, I mean "Oldtimers," "or your friends will think you're a stupid, inbred stack of meat."

PS... is this site really out of Hawaii? or did I misunderstand something(?)... I thought it was out of another star system about 500 years in the future...

OPPYH:

Hello from a n00b! (Well, compared to you. My first post here was on April Fool's Day 2004. How apropos.)

The thing I like best about FFFn is the forum's format. It encourages posts of any length, not just brief snippets and unfinished thoughts. A body can get things off their chest.

The other FF websites break up the flow of discussion by breaking responses into separate pages, and a lengthy response sticks out like a sore thumb; it seems a bit rude to really unencumber your soul on those other sites.

That's why I admire FFFn. It invites you to say everything that's on your mind. And people do take advantage of that. With so many people baring their souls and fully explicating their ideas... Listening to you as you do likewise... Then responding at whatever length they feel is necessary... What's not to love?

I, too, hope FFFn lives forever; but, I'm a realist. Haken may someday weary of maintaining this site, and certainly he will one day perish (as we all will). So, FFFn cannot last forever.

...But I'd prefer to relish it while it lasts, and not dwell on that coming day, when I know I will lose something that has become very precious to me.

Long live Haken (seriously!), and Fireflyfans.net...

Humbly,

zoid

P.S.
I hope not to outlive any of my children. Same goes for FFFn. In memoriam: Lux Lucre (a.k.a. Kerry Pearson)...

P.P.S.
When the site was so horribly screwed up a couple weeks back, I thought The End Was Nigh. Turns out it was just gas, not a fatal heart attack...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I ain't going nowhere! Haken will have to shut the site down before I ever quit coming here. This place is home and Firefly is the one 'verse where I feel I belong.

Haken:

Have you looked at 1and1 Web Hosting ( www.1and1.com)? They appear to be very affordable; well-capitalized; lots of space, bandwidth and throughput; and fully programmable, using a wide range of languages and tools. And they do dedicated servers, too, if that's your 'thang'. Oh, and highly regarded in the industry, too.

(NB: Just trying to be helpful; zoid not affiliated in any way with 1and1.com.)

Seems to me the tricky part will be the backup of the current site -- that was the problem with this latest hiccup, right? -- and then getting your scripts to work on the new server. So... Good luck with that!

Let us know if there's anything we can do to make the transition smoother. Speaking for myself, "Goddammit, I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it'd do any good!" (Barry Corbin, "WarGames")

Take care of yourself, man. We're all counting on ya', Cap'n...

Respectfully,

zoid

DONCOAT

I'm not sure how the Amazon contribution thing works. Haken, do you get the donations immediately, or only after the 30 day "back out" period?

'Cause I'd like to know whether Serenity Day produced a nice little boost in donations. I know I did my bit...

Better servers is nice.

I'm pointin' right at it!
