So I called my parents back home tonight in CA and they informed me that my dog isn't doing too well. She's got bad hip and leg problems and can barely walk, and she fell off the steps in the front porch. I'm very sad... we've had her since I was like 10 years old and she's been a part of the family for 16 years. I love dogs, and especially my dog!, and this just crapped on my day... She's not gone yet, but she's not long for this world.

sigh

Such a sad thing, Ged. I'm sorry to hear that. I lost mine (a childhood friend) while I was away in the army, very upsetting, I felt I should have been there. More recently my best friend's dog (16 years) was lost to us (my friend was always a little jealous...He was the master but I had bonded w/ the dog as a friend), it was a relief that suffering was over but such a loss...I wish your friend peace and you strength.

Not a nice thing to go through, loosing a pet. I lost our first dog when I was 15yrs old. he was also 15yrs old. so we had him all my life. and he had a major stroke which paralised his back half so we had to put him down and I cried for days.

For what it's worth, Hill's Pet Nutrition makes a prescription-only diet that really helps dogs with joint problems. It's called Prescription Diet j/d, and you have to get it from a vet. I've heard a lot of great stories about it.

Ged

Really very sorry to hear about your dog. All the best Ged I feel for you. Is there any chance you can get to your folks' place to spend a bit of time with her?
When you've had a dog for so many years it's extremely difficult to imagine your life without them.
I lost a dog about five years ago and I am still very sad that he died. I'd love to relay some words that would help you with your sadness, but in reality there are none.
I have one dog left and he remains with me still. He's very old and nearing his time too, but no matter how many years he lasts it will never be enough. It's a difficult thing to explain to people who aren't into pets dogs, cats etc, but when you have a dog the word friend is too small.
Hugs.

Awwww, I'm so sorry to hear about your poor dog! That's awful! I've never really had pets myself, much, but I've seen friends and family lose beloved pets. It really is a tough time.

Here's wishing you peace & comfort as you face this struggle. Big hugs for you, too! <3

I lost my dog in January. We'd had him for almost nine years. Even though we have a new dog now (and he's a sweetheart), I'll always have fond memories of him. When you lose a member of your family, they never really leave you. My best wishes go with you.

My thoughts are with you. I've lost two of my cats in the past two weeks, one only two days ago. Pets love you unconditionally, no matter what you do, and their lives are way too short. Mine are like my kids, and I imagine yours are, too.

Don't be so down boy. All animals die sooner or later. You should do that dog a favor and put him down early. I suggest that you roast him on the grill, add a little barbecue sauce and garlic to bring out the flavor. If you do it right, the seasoned meat should keep you in spicy sandwiches for at least a week.

Dear GED,
I can honestly say that I know exactly how you are feeling. Last night my hamster was feeling sick and although we tried to feed her and help her, this mornign she passed away. It is the worst feeling in the world to lose a pet that has become a part of you daily rituals and a member of the family. This is the fifth hamster my family has lost and they were all loved. I will keep your dog in my prayers, and even if you are not a religious person I hope it helps. The best thing you can do is to accept another dog into your life if this one passes, although it can never replace the old one, it helps to ease the pain a bit, and you grow to love him or her just as much. That is what works for me in order to direct all of you rlove to another being.

It's pretty simple, you're being insensitive to someone sharing about going through a hard time. I'm pretty sure that is rude. Not even showing the decency of wishing GED some consolation while they go through a time like this is rude. And honestly, it doesn't matter what you think about the importance of animals, what matters are the emotions of another human being. I hope you can understand that.

MISSTRESSAHARA

Ged, I'm right there with you, I just buried my 22 year old cat on Thursday. We had her since she was a kitten, in fact I played with her the day we went to get her. We'd lost our dog a week before and I wasn't sure I wanted another pet so soon or even a cat, I was always a dog lover, but I fell instantly in love as I played with her. I dangled my necklace on top of a clear glass table and she was underneath trying to get it. It lead to the stairs to the hall.... I was taken and thought she'd be mine but my brother took instant charge of her, even naming her, so she wasn't really mine, yet when he moved out, when everyone moved out all their pets became mine, so it was hard.

She surprised us living so long. 22 years, I mean that's near a hundred for us and she was getting thinner and sicker and her fur was getting mottled but I couldn't find myself taking her in. I already had to let two others go that way (1 ran away as well and another one was taken.)

I knew it was going to be this week, I could feel it, and the night she left she couldn't walk, couldn't even stand and had a hard time breathing. So I brought her to my room, stayed up with her for as long as I could. Talked to her, wet her lips with water, hugged her, just let her know I was there and told her it was alright. She could go now. I'd miss her but she didn't have to stay anymore. She could go and enjoy wild fresh fields and fat mice. Told God He could take her now. I've cried and cried for the last few days and it'll be a while before I can finally accept it. I still look for her on the stairs (getting in my way and nearly tripping me :}) Or hear her howling after she ate, after she did her business, just howling (she'd become deaf) hearing her meow or seeing her in her spot on the couch or later on the floor (it was too hard to get to the couch) She drove me crazy in her old age and peed on practically everything, but I miss her, miss her howling, just miss her prescence. It's all still very fresh.

She's in our front yard now. So I can say hello or wish her a good morning or night, but now with only my other cat and dog it feels very alone. I'll probably be crying again but I wanted to let you know, your not alone here. I'm sorry for your loss. It isn't easy, they are family, and we both have to cope as best we can. *smoochies* sweeting.

Good bye Ayla, I miss you baby.

My dogs keep me safe. They attack anyone that isnt me. I feed 'em and they take care of me. They react to my moods so when I'm down they comfort me. If I were attacked they would shred the attackers. When they die I bury them and buy and train some new dogs. As long as they are alive I love them for the living weapons that they are.

Shadowfly, shut up; you hundan. I cannot believe you are so insensitive. He loves his dog and doesn't want it to die. If you've had a dog for 16 years, since you were ten, loved it and cared for it, feeling like it's a member of your family; you would be sad it's dying too.

I've had my dog for only 3 and 1/2 years and i feel like she's a member of the family. I would feel terrible if she died.

Not true, from the dog musher also out in the sticks. Moose are to be eaten. Sled dogs are teammates, family, they are relied upon to keep you out of open water, to find the way home. All of mine--and they number in the hundreds--have been mourned when their days were done, and I remember all of them. It never gets any easier to lose them, and it shouldn't.

I'll take any one of those dogs over any of the ex-boyfriends, too.

Sorry to hear about this, GED, I lost the last of my old leaders last fall and he was only 14.

Mr Shadowfly seems to be judging people by his own standards.
He doesn't seem to feel like much of a man without his 2 big dogs to intimidate people with.
Funny that someone describing animals as mere tools should be such a 'tool' himself.
