I've had bad knees since I was 12. Whatcha got? Back then I had something called Osgood Schlatter's Disease. Bit of bone just below the kneecap becomes inflamed and can even chip off (mine did). Wore a leg brace for three months; missed an entire basketball season. Knees been buggin' me off and on ever since.

I feel your pain, 13! My knees started acting up when I was 16 or so. Now at 25 years old, I've got wide spread pain (knees, hips, and full back 24/7, and the smaller joints get involved as the pain escalates), and walk with a cane when it's bad. Having to suck it up and buy a cane at my age was difficult.

I don't have a problem with the ocassional pro and con discussion, but the way you are quoting each other and responding had me thinking I was over there for awhile. Love all of you, just trying to keep things civil!

I'm paraphrasing, but the best reply i ever got to asking a guy how i looked in an out fit was something about how i looked gorgeous, and really it was beside the point as he was looking forward mostly to the moment when i took it of.

Usually the safest option is a 'you always look gorgeous to me' or a yup, pretty darn stunning. Unless you have a firm grip on syle, don't offer tips, stick, at most to things like 'oh, the yellow dress was more summery, or the black is sexy. don't personalise, and definetly DON'T say things like - the grey pant make your bum look smaller (her thought will be 'is my bum too big?' or words like almost, as in you look good in almost everything (the first thing she will do is worry about what she doesn't look good in)

I can't help with the 'does my bum look big in this?' My ass is big - pert and rounded (ye! i think, at least, anyhoo *cough*) but big, so i already know the honest answer, and its not something i'd want to hear from a lovers lips, i just don't ask.

I should imagine noncommital is the way to go, distraction (cheeky snogging or taxi's arriving) or a basic 'no' is best. never say yes, only gay best friends can say yes and not die.

ok, I had a fun evening, POTC DMC again, and a club with my sister, where she explained her scale to me (you know, like blokes have a one to ten rating scale.

Well, in typical girly style, its based on dessert.
'0' is crackers - the obvious drug casualties, the psycho's, the lowlifes and the nut jobs. Fruit and Nut - getting a little better, basic idiots and drunken morons.
Pancakes - the could be cutes if only - the guys with baaaaaad haircuts, who look like their mothers dress them and they really don't care, but theres potential somewhere.
Cheescake - most guys, the perfectly 'normal' semi muscular men, with the potential to go up or down after observation.
Brownies - the cute-pies, the ones that really catch your eye and make you want to go talk to them, either because they're hot or because they look like really good fun.
Chocolate torte - the drop dead hotties, the ones you spend the entire night staring at, cause they're just so damn pretty, and only very occasisionally going and actually talking to. this extends up to the kind of guys that you'd willingly crawl across the dancefloor for.

Id made me giggle, so i thought i'd share.

of course, then we started talking about desserts, eyes glazed over. thats where the crawling thing came from, my sister said something like she'd willingly crawl the length of the room for chocolate torte, and all i could think was 'are we talking the guys or the cake?'

ah well.

Sorry, all. I kinda crashed this morning. Still tired.
I like clothes, too. But a lot of times what's in isn't anything I would wear. Other times there is brief flashes of something I adore being really in and I buy a bunch of clothes and keep wearing them for years, regardless of whether they're supposed to be in or not. I don't tend to buy new clothes every year, and I don't tend to buy a lot of them new, either. Most expensive thing I've bought was a gauzy skirt I bought new for $80. I love it. Usually, though, there are other places to spend my coin. I like clothes, I like fashion, I just don't like fashion. Does that make any sense? Are we even still talking about it? I find it easier to respond to almost everything if I just open another window, so at this point in my typing I'm very far behind.
Oh Copilot, I feel a little of your pain. Not like I felt that everything I said was wrong, but Ex of Doom did make me feel like I should be into the things he was into with no questions asked *coughcoughworldofwarcraftcough* and if I thought something was silly, I was wrong. I never told him he was wrong, I just said I didn't get it or something.
Well, I did tell him not to talk about one of my favorite bands in a disparaging way at one point. It seems like a long time ago, but I think that might have been just a few weeks before the breakup. It's all fuzzy in my mind.
I need to find a cute boy. Maybe not with much bigger parts, though.
I dabble in coin collection, have a fairly small knife collection (only because I'm picky) Used to collect troll dolls.
Originals and covers. It really depends. I've heard some quite amazing covers that get panned just because the original artist is so respected. There's only been one cover I really thought was heresy, and I totally can't remember what it was right now. But there are several covers I really enjoy, even if I also like the original.
Ah, rugbug's list makes me think now! Yeah, Cure is better than 311 in most respects, though I didn't hate 311's version of Lovesong.
Have to disagree on Smooth Criminal, though.
I think the only covers I really hate are Limp Bizkit ones, mostly because I just hate them.
The Goo Goo Dolls also did an excellt cover of "A million Miles Away" on one of their early albums. I didn't even know it was a cover until I heard it on the radio and said "Wait, that's not the Dolls! WTF?" Don't know who the original was.
And (please don't shoot me) Class of '99 did what I find to be an excellent cover of "The Wall" and I enjoy their version much more than Pink Floyd's. I could really go on and on about this. I have in the past.
I don't have the energy for politics, but I'll agree with most of what Dayve said and just leave it.
I have to say, though, that I've tried to get along with people who majorly disagree with me and it doesn't tend to work. I know it can work, but so far it hasn't and I'm not eager to try again. I don't tend to mind that we disagree to a certain point, love conquers a lot, but it does lead to fights. Only fights I really had with Ex of Doom were over religion and politics. It was weird because he calimed he didn't really have a stance, didn't really believe anything in terms of religion, but if I started talking about it he would get snarky and start almost unconciously arguing the other side to me. When we first started dating, he seemed to really agree with me on a lot of things, even said that sex was the most sacred thing you could do and all that, but that seemed to fade away, and he started saying I was just trying to force my beliefs on him and that everyone had a right to believe what they wanted and on and on. I was just trying to explore with him, see if he could figure out what he believed. It was okay at first, but right before we broke up we were fighting about it a lot.
I'm not sure where I was going with that. Um, I think it's best that someone really know who they are and what they believe; makes things easier. Maybe if that was the case I could get along with someone who differed from me, but it is something I like to talk about to like-minded folk, so I think I would be more comfortable with someone who had similar beliefs. They could call themselves whatever they wanted (though I tend to get along best with Buddhists and Pagans/Wiccans) but it's really how you think about such things that matters more than what you call yourself.
but I will say that I agree with River; the Bible is broken. It doesn't make sense. If someone's on Book's side of the argument, we might not get along in a romantic setting.
CK, Agnostic is fine; it just means you believe there's something in the world that is beyond your contol, you just don't call it anything. Most Agnostics have a different personal take on things, which I think is just shiny. I defined myself as agnostic a lot for awhile; I still could, if I'm feeling too lazy to really go into it. Atheist is a different thing entirely. They tend to be fairly cynical people, and not beleiving there's anything after this world can mess with them at the end of their lives. I'm not sure I could date a real, true atheist since my spirituallity is tied so closely to my body, but I get along with them fine.
I won't name all bands I like, I don't have access to my CD's. Let's see... Evanescence, Bon Jovi, Barenaked Ladies, Eve 6, Billy Joel, Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day... those are the ones I can think of who I've seen in concert and have all or most of their music. I know there are more.

If it help, theres a family problem with joints, maily ankles, but also wrists and elbows, there just seems to be a weaknes.

so i was barely 18 months old before i started having joint issues - mainly my elbow would just fall out of its socket. tug a bit and plop, there it goes. so i also have very scarred knees, as if i stumbled my parents had to just let go of my hand and let me fall. In all my baby photo's i'm wearing this little plastic sling thing. ah fun.

so, so the teens isn't to bad compared, if it makes you feel better to think that way...

Favorite clothes on a SO - couldn't comment really. My last Ex used to wear beutiful bespoke suit to work, i saw him once and he looked divine, but he alsways always changed into tatty old rugby shirts before he came round.
The one before that was a combats and band tshirts guy. bleh. no offence, if you want to wear those things then marvellous, go right ahead. but i find them hard to get excited about. I love guys in black though - a crips black shirt always look fantastic, open at the collar (see those promo shots of Nate for the Serenity releas for an idea.)

Of course, the best outfit on a bloke (especially if they a bit buff, is a pair of low slung jeans. And a cheeky smile to accessorise.

The French - if it helps at all, if sat round a bottle of wine with two french girls, who in as many words said that they love France, but they can't live there 'cause of all the damn french people.

So even the french hate the franch, apparently. I've only ever had the vaguest desires to see Paris, and after all the accounts i've heard, its getting vaguer. I'f set my sight's instead on driving through tuscany, living maybe in morrocco(would have to learn the languages!) visiting Venice, and when i'm rich joining in with the Carnivale every year. and getting to know all the good bits about the states.

England is lovely. As soon as ever i'm able to get my own place, you all have an invite to visit.The wonderful thing as well is its small size - the other coast is only 3 hours away, touring the various town could take as long or as short a time as you wished, then theres the delights of Scottland, Ireland and Wales so close by.

Just avoid the chavs and its heaven on earth.

Covers -I love Tori Amos covers, of virtually anysong cept 10cc' s i'm not in love. But i especially love strange little girl, real men and love song. they for me are better than the originals.
Like wise, the one gnr song i like is Sympathy for the devil (over the original Stones version) and i prefer all the 80's versions of that Smiths one (was the theme song for charmed) and the leaving on a jet plane cover by Fiona Apple.

The originals that remain the baest aree Hurt - the Cash version was touching, but I still prefer the NIN version. The Hounds of Love by Kate Bush - the futureheads must be hunted down and killed for than monstrosity. virtually any song covered or sampled by any rnb 'artist' - infact if they were banned from listening to other peoples music i'd be happy. and the original Feelin good - i love muse to bit, i just prefere the original.

Bands that must never be touched - the Doors (as the pop muppets proved)(with the possible exceptions for bands like echo and the bunnymen) Kate Bush, David Bowie and Elton John. (in the seventies anyway, i don't like his eighties output, so those are free for all.

Band in my dream concert? White Rose Movement as opener (buggers wont come up to liverpool) the cure, NIN, Led Zep or the who (when they were younger) Tori Amos.

PR, I may have said this before, but let me say it again; I love wandering into the thread in the mornings to see one of your long posts waiting. Gets all my synapses firing in the right order...well, along with a little help from the coffee.

A cover or two I missed yesterday that I enjoy; Johnny Cash doing Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus, LimpBizkit did a live version of The Wall which I enjoyed, and a band I do not remember offhand did a cover of 99 Red Baloons that rocked.

Seryn, thank you for the French story...never thought they didn't like their own country!

I lived near Paris, but that was back in 1981-83. I never really liked the city, even when I was a youngster. I traveled back to Europe every summer until '87, and went back in 2000 to meet the ex-wife's parents. The further you get from Paris, the better it is. Heck, in the Provence area (way South), they are actually very nice people.

Seryn, let me know when you do get a place, and set up a sofa for me!

I agree with you about Echo and the Bunnymen...they did a fairly decent job with the Doors. I am a fan of Billy Idol (the later stuff, circa Cradle of Love), but I can't stand to listen to his version of L.A. Woman.

oh, chavs are the undesirables. They are the stereotype most likely to be hound sitting in a perfectly furnished council home, drinking beer from the can at 1oam, bitching about one of their many kids fathers not giving them enough money to buy addidas trainers fro the 6 month old, and burberry bedsheets for them selves. While the said kid is outside the house, dirty despite wearing a tracksuit that cost more than my entire wardrobe, and amusing himself and his ten siblings by spitting on passers by, stealing from the local shop and pissing in peoples letterboxes. They are the originators of 'happy slapping' and keeping pit bulls to make them selves look hard ass. The females start breeding around the age of 14 - 16, and will have several children, usually by different fathers, that will be named things like 'chantalle' 'beckham' 'romeo' and 'brittney'. Although they remain in the parental home, care and attention to the offspring usually ceases after (badly carried out) toilet training, at which point they are sent out onto the streets to become other peoples problems. The males of the species are of the 'spurt and leave' school of fatherhood, and dedicate their lives to making other men look bad. Most often found with a can of bear in one hand, they are badly educated and indifferent to the concept of earning their own living, they spent their lives leaching from the state, and often turn to crime, drugs and fraud to make extra cash to fuel their obsession with designer labels. There is a sup species however who pride them selves on never having been on benefits a day in their lives. As idf this somehow makes them or their children better. The group for which ASBO's were invented, the nevertheless remain the group least likely to pay any attentiopn to the law. Hobbies include, getting drunk in public, going to rock clubs and insulting the other punters, fighting pretty much anywhere, but especially at three am on a saturday morning or at football matches. they invariably smell bad - either through over or under use of designer knock off aftershaves.
Visually they can be recognised by the uniform wearing of tracksuits, emblasoned beyond all reaches of style with designer logos, most often worn with trainers, but sometimes with dress shoes fro special occasions, and driving small citty run abouts, dressed up with oversized alloys, and a sound system playing horrendously crap music very loudly.

Yeah? Aw, that's nice to hear.

I forgot to mention a cover that I love and adore; Evanescence doing "Heart Shaped Box". Even all the hard core Nirvana fans I've known (a LOT) agree that they do an excellent job with it. And it's all acoustic and stuff. Damn it's good, though. I love that band.

The closest equivalent I ever heard was "white trash," but let's not forget that diversity is everything: people of all races, creeds, and colors can be trash equally.

So "chavs" is more egalitarian.

Hmm, my guess about MSG and the aforementioned worst students in the school is that she prefers to have them rather than someone else having them and not workin' with 'em right.

Um...... Ugh, my father once talked to me about shopping with women being an important skill, and to always be patient when trying on clothes is involved, and of course, never say anyone looks fat. Meh, i think I could have figured that bit out. As for actually having opinions on the matter, bah call me crazy but while i've got the male interest in the female form mostly set, I have yet to understand why either sex is ever attracted to the other's posterior. /shrug.

Excellent point. It's generally the kids that give you the hardest time that need the most attention and work. I'll try to remember that on Monday when I'm back teaching those hyper Italians! Still, it#s good to be reminded that I have it very, very easy in comparison to so many other teachers around the world.

Hello again people.

Sorry I've been too busy to chat recently but keeping up with you guys is like a full time job! I've at least been pretending to work!

I'm going to do the unforgaivable here and jump into a thread without reading all the other posts. I hope I'm not interupting anyone's train of thought but I'm just so excited I needed to vent!

My sister is pregnant! I'm so very happy for her! She's been trying for a while now and at 37 she was starting to get a bit worried! Seems I don't have to offer my belly as host after all!

The only problem is, she's due to go on holiday to Madagasca in 3 weeks. It's all paid for (and then some - I mean this is one fancy holiday, two weeks in 5 star accomodation plus guided tours of the rainforest, snorkelling in underground caves... the lot!) but now she isn't sure whether she should go. The flight isn't the problem, it's the anti malerial drugs. Turns out Madagasca is in a high risk area and no doctor will prescribe larium to a pregnant woman. Even the milder drugs have a very slight risk attached apparently (what's worse is that the risk is of congenital deformity rather than abortion. Now that's a very scary prospect). So at the moment she's trying to decide whether to give up a £6000 holiday or take the risk.

What's got me all of a flutter is that she says that if she decides not to go then she will give the two tickets to me as a birthday present! I mean ....wow! But I'm now all conflicted. On the one hand, I know how much she was looking forward to this, but on the other hand weeee holiday! But then, she needs the break (she's so overworked) and I'd feel terrible, but also weee holiday! But ... the guilt... but... the excitement...... dribble!

Outfits: Fishnets. On the arms. I can't quantify it, but the fishnet-sleeve winds me up. It's like the clothes are cheating on the concealment thing.

I've said the same thing about fishnets. MsG has actually asked that question before; fishnets and/or silk. God they're sexy.

Emma, yay for your sis! Hopefully she can take a nice little break without doing anything to endanger her sprog and you can go on holiday for your birthday (which is when, btw?).
I have some imponderables I wanna ask, but this thread is getting long. So I can wait, I think. Assuming I remember later what I wanted to ask.
