Check out this story on AICN:

http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=23963

I think this may bode well for the potential of future Firefly/Serenity episodes via DVD. One can only hope.

Hmm... Well, I have trouble trusting someone who says "the Internets" (and who doesn't even rank Firefly in his top 3 scifi series!), but maybe that's just me. But even taking him at his word, he specifically states that he hasn't been able to find anything online about the B5 situation. You'd think it'd be all over the place by now.

And even if B5 does get episodes on DVD, it's a vastly different situation from Firefly. For one thing, we know that Joss has several more projects lined up, so it would be a few years at best before he could start working on Firefly episodes again. And then there are issues of budget, working with Fox, getting the actors all back together, etc etc. Yay for B5 fans if this rumor is true, but I'm not holding my breath for similar treatment for Firefly.

Seems like you just took the sky from yourself.

First, his tongue is placed firmly in his cheek when he said "the Internets".

Second this is from JMS himself, so I am sure it is more than mere rumor.

Third, one can always hope, right. If there is anything I have learned from my years long love affair with Firefly/Serenity it is that hope is what keeps me going. It also is one of the central themes of the show. So, while I am no fool and I am not sitting here holding my breath foolishly, I can still hope that there will be more Firefly stories told (original cast or not).

Many thought there would never be a movie. Then Serenity happened. Star Trek was off the air for a long time before the first movie was even made. Then another decade (more or less) passed before a new series started. B5 was cancelled and then picked up by another network when all was thought lost. Now it seems that the idea championed by many for Firefly (episodic content direct to DVD) will be happening for B5. I do not think it is out of bounds of reality to hope that this will happen for Firefly in the next 5 years or so (especially as digital content distribtion ramps up and distribution costs go down).

I was a big fan of the original B5 series (at least the first three seasons, the last two seasons had a lot of good stuff but got bogged down in mindless lovey dovey) and even a few of the made for TV movies... but I'm not confident in the resurrection of B5, especially after my attempt at watching Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers.

Can't say where it went wrong. The director was the same as In the Beginning, which, while flawed, was a good movie. He's also done a lot of Star Trek episodes. JMS has done some really good stuff too, so I'm not sure if he is at fault. But I digress.

I could deal with the bad acting, since it was obviously a low-budget film (Andreas Katsulas was awesome, as usual). I could even deal with the rediculous concept of the Rangers being forbidded to retreat, even though (originally) they were a intelligence and reconassaince group, not a engagement force. I could even stomach the "diplomats" started bitching after they got saved, which was way over the top. But who the hell, I mean, what pimply-faced snot-nosed hasn't-showered-since-kindergarten testicle-shrunken retard came up with the combat system. Please.

I'm sure I would have more gripes if I could ahve finished watching the movie.

If this is true, I should probably find the whole of the original somewhere.

I see aintitcoolnews as more a cess-pool full of idiots than anything else.

JMS mentioned this in volume 8 of the script books. The dollar figure mentioned there was earning WB half a Billion dollars in gross DVD sales. I don't know how they could be in the Red because they usually came in under budget.

I once read an article by Ted Elliot and Terry Rollio (writers of the Pirates movies, among many others) about how, with the way the studio stuctured the books, the budget of Pirates of the Carribean would continue to rise, retroactively, as the movie continued to pull in money, even on DVD. Just one of the many ways studios cook the books. I get the impression the same thing is at work here.

Nah, I just don't see the point in getting excited every time some other show gets something cool. Like I said, even if this *rumor* (I'll get to that in a sec) is true, it means absolutely nothing in regards to Firefly. It's not like direct-to-DVD is some new idea that no one ever heard of before JMS (supposedly) decided to try it out. I have a hard time believing that the idea has never crossed Joss's mind. But for whatever reason, Joss is working on other things right now. What happens with B5 or Stargate or any other show, and what happened with Star Trek has no bearing on what will happen with Firefly. I know people don't like to hear that, but it's the truth.

Look, you can't expect this to work logically. TV execs do not think logically, and they don't count to ten the same way the rest of the world does. Just because the WB greenlights a B5 direct-to-DVD series doesn't mean that Fox is suddenly going to come around. The situations are each unique, and each totally and completely unrelated to the other.

Quote:

Second this is from JMS himself, so I am sure it is more than mere rumor.

No, the *rumor* is that JMS said it. There's been nothing to back that up. If he *had* said it, wouldn't there be tons of fan postings about it all over the internet? He supposedly said it at a panel at Comic Con, right? There was more than one other person in the room when he said it, yes? When something is reported in one or two places but not mentioned anywhere else, that's a big reason to be suspicious of it. I mean, if Joss said that Firefly was going to be continued in a direct-to-DVD format, while sitting on a panel at Comic Con last week, don't you think that news would be everywhere by now? And yet JMS supposedly says something this big to a room full of fans, and no one is posting about it?

Now I haven't done a lot of looking around on my own, so maybe this story is being talked about on B5 boards now, even though it hadn't been when the AICN article was posted yesterday. I fully admit that this rumor might be true, and if it is, great. I honestly don't really care either way, not being that big of a fan of B5. And since what happens with B5 has no effect on what happens with Firefly, the truth behind this story really means nothing to me.

Quote:

Third, one can always hope, right.

I'm not saying not to hope. I'm just saying that jumping up and down and proclaiming good things for Firefly every time some other scifi show gets something is perhaps not the best use of one's energy.

Quote:

Many thought there would never be a movie. Then Serenity happened. Star Trek was off the air for a long time before the first movie was even made.

The latter has no bearing on the former.

Well I guess that's where we differ. I wouldn't say that it's out of the bounds of reality for Firefly to come back in a direct-to-DVD format, but I do think it's highly unlikely. Joss has several other projects lined up, and he doesn't seem quite as obsessed with Firefly as all of us here are. Why would he take himself out of the Hollywood mainstream to do direct-to-DVD development for a small audience? Why would he do that, when he's got projects like Wonder Woman and Goners on the horizon?

It's not that I don't think that there's a future for Firefly. Like every other Browncoat, I want more of the 'Verse. But I think there are things that are more likely to happen, and things that are very unlikely. Why expend energy getting excited about what happens with other shows, when that has no effect on what happens with Firefly, *and* has very little chance of happening to Firefly? Wouldn't that energy be put to better use in areas that actually matter?

The way things are going now, I don't think we'll see TV-like episodic content for Firefly again, either on TV or direct-to-DVD. But there are avenues that are more likely, IMO, such as another movie, licensed novels, video games, etc. Focusing our energy there could actually accomplish something.
