I just read an article on IMDb about how YouTube helped to resurrect a cancelled TV show....

Quote:

NBC is expected to announce today (Friday) that it will resurrect Nobody's Watching, which was canceled last year by The WB. Two weeks ago, the New York Times reported that a copy of the pilot had been downloaded more than 300,000 times since it was posted on YouTube.com in mid-June. Daily Variety reported today that NBC plans to fund a series of video clips featuring the characters from Watching that will also be posted on YouTube and on its own website. In an interview with the trade publication, Watching's producer, Bill Lawrence, praised NBC for being willing to take the risk of resurrecting a show that had already been discarded by another network because of the demand of Web viewers.

So what do you think, 'Coats? If it worked for Nobody's Watching, can it work for us?? P'raps this is just the shot we need to make Serenity Summer into a Serenity Success!!!

Shiny. Is that how you're all feeling?
Then perhaps Mal Reynolds IS in your best interests as captain.

I'm always hopeful for Firefly to come back, but this seems like too different of a situation. It's NBC, first of all, who's done *many* successful series with Bill Lawrence. This show was originally planned to be on WB. NBC would no doubt pick up something from one of their only strengths (NBC is losing more and more viewers). Secondly, they're only doing a few web episodes. Cheap to produce, since the show used mostly previously constructed sets from past shows, and no special effects. Firefly isn't cheap, especially for something more than a few 'webisodes'. I still love the idea of fans being able to bring something back (I'm sure we all are). Bill Lawrence is a great writer and his work deserves even more spotlight. We're just going to have to wait for time where it can shine back on Joss and the BDHs.

Does anyone else think it's funny that a show called "Nobody's Watching" was cancelled? Is it just me?

While it would seem pretty ironic...I think it was just a pilot that they decided not to make into a series because the audience in the test screens were confused about the plot.

CAPTURE

I am totally down with the down-loading plan!
Anyone know if the Firefly pilot and/or other episodes are on YouTube???

It couldn't hurt to try, and who knows, maybe a cable channel like Sci-fi will give it a second chance!

Hey there Mr Grumpy.. don't snuff out my shiney dream so quickly...

OK I know you're just playing devil's advocate or just being 'realistic' (like my mother thinks she is all the time) but this is actually a good precedent - it is a step in the right direction!! Yay!!

Not that I mean to be too harsh with you n'all - but this is a BIG victory for fans of (yeah - I thought it was ironic too) "Nobody's Watchin'" which I had never heard of until this minute!!

I am convinced that the future of good TV and all associated films etc. will come from something similar! It is just over 5 years ago that my best friend and I went to the video store and there were 2 shelves of DVDs and a whole shop full of VHS videos - now you cannot get VHS videos and who would want to - we just have to work on those same exec's until they realise it's worth the risk and the money to be at the front-line of the 'download generation' of TV/DVD viewers!!

While I don't disagree that our best chance to bring Firefly back may be through some internet form, I do think that Callahan is right -- the situation is vastly different because we're dealing with Fox, not NBC. I mean, who knows, if Firefly had been an NBC show, maybe they wouldn't have cancelled it in the first place. (I'd make some joke about Fox's "failure" audience size being a pipe dream for NBC, but I won't because I like many NBC shows. )

Has anybody else noticed that Celbrity Deathmatch is back? How did that happen? That gives me hope too.

There are a couple other threads here talking about stuff on youtube.com. Maybe it would help for all of us to watch or download as many as we can. It certainly can't hurt.

I find that to be very funny, personally.

This is good news. I see the point of those who don't see it as likely that this will happen for Firefly.. but, you never know! It could happen.

We can always dream. And hope.

PDCHARLES

What happened? He see your face?

The following link is an effort organized by FollowMal and Hera to do just that... put FF stuff on YouTube. What stuff, you ask? Well, newly compiled episode trailers is all.

If it works... super-shiny-fracka-licious

if not... gives us BCs more content...

can't lose...
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=21915

I know we have some extra creative gurus out there that can pull these off.

Thank you, PDCharles, for helping to spread the signal about the trailer contest. Sometimes it's difficult to keep the folks on this board apprised of happenings, even when it's just one thread over!

To clarify, the vids will be judged and awarded before they're uploaded to youtube, and eventually, if all goes as planned, the trailers will be hosted on a custom Firefly myspace page. More info to come on that in August.

Also, FFF.net is preparing to involve that other ubiquitous downloadable medium, iTunes, in the next Browncoat Serenity Summer Campaign project. Beginning next Friday, July 28th, Browncoats will be encouraged to download a Firefly episode a day from iTunes ($1.99 ea).

Here's the skinny on this from 11thHour:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/showevent.asp?e=128

If, in the future, we will be downloading the TV we *want* to see direct from the creators (instead of relying on the outmoded network model) it will be from a source much like iTunes. Let's support it now, and our BDS.

Watch for a new thread on this tomorrow!
