So I was thinking, from all the sci-fi movies, tv shows, books etc. what one piece of technology would you love to have in everyday life?

Those transporters from Star Trek are pretty cool, especially with the current price of gas.

What do other people think?

Replicators.

The Star Trek kind, not the every-bug-related-nightmare-you've-ever-had-is-coming-to-kill-you things from Stargate.

I prepare a lot of meals for myself. Thing is, all the remotely healthy food I know how to make (and can make with the food-parts in my mom's house) serves 2 or more, and typically requires more than an hour to make (courtesy of my mother's philosophy that a "meal" is when you start making dinner at lunch time and have all your friends over).

Since I have no friends in the area, and have better things to do than spend half my time cooking, I'm always having microwave soup, sandwiches, and/or ramen.

Only two things really stand out:
1 A Firefly, but since I can't fly it or keep it in repair that might be a problem.
2 The Tardis, but since I can't operate it or keep it in repair that might be a problem.

I wonder if the fact that both things I'd like are modes of transportation say something about me, on the other hand they are also both homes.

Though we never do, to my knowledge, see the actual bedrooms in the Tardis, or the kitchen, or the bathroom, but you just know that they're there, down the hall somewhere.

I'd want a Firefly too. Cuz it's bigger than the Millenium Falcon, even if the Firefly's don't have a hyperdrive. But that's kinda cliche on this forumn, so...

I think an android would be nice. One that doesn't complain much, and would do all my chores for me.

Aw man, my programmer-type nature is showing. I read that and thought software bugs. Not creepy-crawlies, but rather things that crash the server. And I have had nightmares about those.

For me, it's a tough choice between a Firefly and a transporter. Hm, freedom or instant travel? Or is instant travel freedom? And are Fireflies gas guzzlers? Hmmm...

I have a list of these, each has a reason.

1. A Firefly(well you already know)
2. Become a super soldier from Project: Snowblind(That would be awsome)
3. Holodeck(I would never have to go to the airports again, I could go anywhere without leaving my house)
4. Star Trek Replicator(never have to cook again)
5. Shield thighy from Stargate Atlantis(I'd do so many stupid things just to scare people and never get hurt)
6. Strider from Half Life 2(cause it would be all like "stomp, stomp, stomp" and you'd be all "AAGGGH! help!" And it'd be all "budda, budda, budda" and you'd be all "it's killing me!" and it'd be all "Stab-you-through-chest-with-foot: And you'd be all "oh no I'm dead" Heh heh. It may also say something about me as when I wrote Time Travel, my mind was thinking of the TARDIS. Which being the case, one can be on a firefly at will (and good course plotting )

There's something called a Prose Portal in a novel by Jasper Fforde called The Eyre Affair. You can read yourself into anything written: poem, novel, laundry label. The heroine, Thursday Next, gets to meet Mr. Rochester. Gotta be careful to interact with characters when they're not "on" in the story, though, or you end up written into the book, changing the plot. Fforde's hilarious, on the page and speaking in public.

He was delightful. A bit high on himself, but no less funny for it. If I remember, he described an invention: a semi-digital, semi-industrial, semi-mystical process that turned out to be...reading.

Don't know if he can sustain the world he's created; I found each next book in the Thursday Next series to be a little less vital. What do you think?

( Haven't read the latest, the "nursery crimes.")

I started to think and asked myself what was less good about it. My answer was is was more predictable than the first book had been. And I think that part of the reason it may seem so is as the books go on, we're getting more used to the world he created, so it seems a little less shiny, strange and mystifying as we're now able to apply the logic for it's 'verse and get a somewhat accurate idea of what's going to happen.

I already know that the more easily I can predict something in either books, TV or movies (on my first viewing) the less I like it.

Movies that are predictable I simply loathe. They have a new unvarnished palate...they *should* be able to surprise me, and more than just once. There just isn't any excuse for being pedantric and predictable.

TV and books I'll be a little more forgiving to as the more time you spend immersed in the world of said book or TV show, the more time you have to become familiar with it, and more likely to be able to accurately predict a character's response to a given situation. At that point, as I said, I'm willing to forgive a bit more so long as it's presented well.

I feel the Thursday next novels are presented reasonably well. Not a Bradbury or Tolkien level, but above average.

Nope, I haven't read 'Nursey Crimes' yet either. i have hopes of being able to do so later this year.

I'm pretty sure you mean "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson. There were some amazing ideas in that one. My favorites from that book:

1) The primer.
2) Dust-repellent clothing.
3) Mediatronic tattoos, toilet paper, walls, etc.
4) The robot horse as light as a briefcase.
5) Internal sound system.

I think i'd like to get my hands on some of that Luck Virus from Red Dwarf. I could then use my super luck power in some way to help get our favourite show back. Then afterwards proably go and buy a few lottery tickets on my way to the Casino!

That sounds pretty useful.

Ah, but in that story, didn't the main character get trapped as a passenger inside his own head?

There's usually a catch.

RIVER: They weren't cows inside. They were waiting to be, but they forgot. Now they see the sky and they remember what they are.
MAL: Is it bad that what she said made perfect sense to me?

Strictly speaking, not the central character. And he was only a prisoner (in effect) for a week or so before he was killed.

With any technology you have to expect the occasional glitch.

I would have to say the TARDIS, as long as it comes with a certain pretty blond companion.
I dont have one for the firefly class but here is a sales brochure for the tardis, not too shure on their financing though :)

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I can't believe no one has said the starship Heart of Gold from Hitchhiker's Guide. It has it all! You could go anywhere, do anything, go back in time, foreward in time, and there would always be a very cheerful central computer to help you out. Man, that'd be sweet. Especially if it was like the movie version and had that thing that could make anything you were craving. I want that ship!

Well, that. . . doesn't narrow it down at all.
