I would also recommend Yotoden (Wrath of the Ninja).

I tend to lean toward "times before these" when defining period. Another place and time that we could never get back. I was always curious about the place and time of Inuyasha.

Most of the historical stuff is either set during the Sengokujidai (Warring States Period) or Meji Restoration ie closing days of the Tokugawa Bakufu and the change to Emperor Meji's rule.
So Examples of both, Inuyasha is set during the Sengokujidai period as well as Mononoke hime (Spirit Princess)
Ruroni Kenshin is set during the Meji Restorations and flashbacks to the revolt between the Choshu & Satsuma samurai vrs the Shinsengumi, and Bakufu forces. etc.
So hope that helps you out there.
mata, Ookami yori
(However as noted Inuyasha is more fantsy besides the costumes etc.)

For period anime, I really liked 100 Stories (also known of as Requiem from the Darkness). Basilisk was also a lot of fun. Tactics was set in an interesting period, but the show itself I found dull (although a lot of people would disagree). Although I'm not sure if I can call it a period show, but Mushishi (unlicensed, so you'll have to get it via torrent probably) is terrific.

I watched Emma a while ago--it's a nice love story and I really enjoyed it, but don't watch it hoping for *action*. It felt very authentic though, so much that it was hard to believe it was Japanese (except everyone was talking in Japanese fo course....).

So I decided to man up and rent the seventh Samurai Seven disc. Still a bit apprehensive about watching it, might as well get over it.
Seen the Samurai Champloo set in the local geek store. 200 Dollars! Gonna be savin' alotta lunchmoney for that one. Also saw the first Gunsword disc with collection box. Yay.
Have to go back on payday for the Firefly cards, (complete set for $25.00. Chuck had a whole stack of autograph cards, woo hoo.)
Damn our obsessions are expensive.

English Major.

I slogged through The Morgesons, Humphrey Clinker, Pamela, and possibly the worst and most interminable novel in the entire English Canon: Clarissa.

Trust me, I can handle talking heads and glacial plots. If there's anime involved, I can handle just about anything.

I can't believe that only one other person mentioned "Outlaw Star". Come one, it has lots of spaceships, a Girl In A Box that a massive organiation will kill to possess, a genuis mechanic, a charismatic "any job will do" captain, a woman who is a stone cold ass kicker, a ship that almost always is in need of repairs, a crew constantly short of money.

Actually, I believe they have. I was browsing on eBay, and found a few listings for FMA box sets. And yes, they were in English. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/SEALED-FULLMETAL-ALCHEMIST-BOXSET-FULL-METAL-ALCHE

Be VERY careful about buying box sets from ebay, ESPECIALLY anime box sets. They're almost always bootlegs. Even box sets from amazon (if you're buying them used) are often bootlegs--you'll notice a price spike between the cheapish ones and the expensive ones that pretty clearly delimits what's legal and what isn't. If on a site like amazon, you can't find the box set, then the ebay box set is almost definitely a bootleg.

Bootlegs tend to be bad quality and have lousy subtitles. If you can't afford the legal DVD's, you're better off downloading fansubs. At least that way you don't support the people ripping off the series... Netflix, if you're in the US, is also a really good alternative.

Anyway, I'm not attacking or accusing anyone, I just was giving a warning and a suggestion, since I didn't know any of this when I first started buying anime from ebay and I got stuck with some low quality bootlegs as a result.

Been looking for Sam Kieth's The Maxx. Aired on MTV 'round the time of Aeon Flux. All that Ebay has is bootleg DVD's of that one, it has never been released on DVD. Loaned my video cassette to a friend and never got it back. If anyone's ever seen it, I hope you'd agree that it was a very profound piece of work. Homeless guy who believes himself to be a superhero who occasionally finds himself confused and in between worlds. Read the comic and was blown away by the animated series.

Only saw Outlaw Star once. Haven't had the money or access to it since. Liked what I saw. Must find more.

The Maxx was an excellent show, but in some ways hard to watch. It was pretty heart-wrenching to watch some of the episodes, especially the later ones.

If you're interested in Outlaw Star, by all means, rent or buy it. I've heard some call it a rip-off of Cowboy Bebop, but I really think that's comparing apples and oranges. It would be like saying Firefly is a rip-off of Cowboy Bebop. All in all, good show.

I loved the Maxx!

Big Anime fan here....been watching it since I was 5....Astro Boy and Prince Planet (B&W they were)

We had a club in Buffalo 10 -15 years ago. We were importing Anime on Laserdiscs. No subs or Dubs there. Once in awhile we would get scripts that fans would put out, but it got annoying to read and watch at the same time.

Favorites

Space Battleship Yamato and anything else by Leiji Matsumoto!!!!
(Galaxy Railways has to be the prettiest!)

Bubble Gum Crisis...the original

Way too many to list...have seen so much in the last 15 years....

Can't forget about Project A-Ko. Darned silly but I love it!

Yamato was awesome.
I remeber getting up early (5:30 AM) to watch Robotech on Sturday morning when I was nine. Hated anime for a long time (thanks Dragon Ball). For some strange reason I started liking it again when I turned twenty two.

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Did you ever see Urban Square or Time Stranger (not Etrange)? For some reason, I was thinking about them the other day. How about the Lensman movie, Merow Link, or Starship Troopers?
